Maui with toddler--trip report
Wonderful post. We also experienced nothing but kindness and warmth from the locals as well. We are multiethic as well but I think what makes the difference is your attitude, openess and spirit. I think the locals read into your attitude or lack of one. One server told us a horrific story of being called stupid for placing the wrong dish in front of someone. Unacceptable in any part of the world. Visitors should plan to slow down. You aren't in NY or LA but that's the whole point!
Why Yelp Sucks!
Good one jman. Or "epic fail" tj. That said I do cautiously use Yelp.
Maui Eats
We loved Star Noodle and ate there twice. Sit at the bar if Johnny is working. He'll be wearing the Santa hat. Get the pad thai and the garlic noodles. They will customize dishes to your liking. We order the garlic noodles with veggies and chicken. Be sure to save room for the malasadas for dessert. Trust me on this, ask for double caramel and no chocolate. Sea House has a great happy hour from 2-5 pm. Appetizers are $5 and 2 plates make a meal. Try the sweet potato quesadilla and the mushroom ravioli. Heard good things about the Maui balls too. Beautiful view and beach to boot. It's not easy to find but it's the Napaili Kai Beach Resort. Up in Paia, go to Paia Fish Market. It's nothing fancy but they use the same fishermen as Mama's Fish House and the fish sandwiches or "burgers" were out of this world. Get the Mahi. It was so good the hubs wanted to order a second one. You'll also save yourself a few hundred dollars from a trip to Mama's. Drive up to Mama's park in the beach parking with the blue cones and enjoy the view for free.
Some of the locals also recommended that we go "grind" at Mala, Leoda's Pie Shop (for the best Ahi sandwich on the island), Saigon Cafe, Kimo's and Da Kitchen. Another told us that Roy's has a great happy hour from 5:30 to 6:30 and 8:30 to 9:30 with $5 appetizers. Breakfast at the Gazebo is also something you shouldn't miss. A bit hard to find as it's also in a condo/resort building. Try the fried rice and the mac nut pancakes. Portions are huge so you can share or order a half portion of the fried rice like the locals do. Lahaina Farms (it's a supermarket à la Whole Foods) was also recommended for nicely prepared foods that make for a nice beach picnic.
From the tourists, we heard good things about Merriman's and Mama's Fish House but all the locals agree that you don't need to spend that much money to eat well on Maui.
Places I would skip include Aloha Mixed Plate, David Paul's, Hula Grill (unless you are staying in a hotel nearby but don't go out of the way for it) and Kihea Caffe (okay but not as good as Gazebo). Pita Paradise in Kihea was a solid choice for lunch if you are looking something healthy but it's nothing fancy. Enjoy your trip!
vanilla cake recipe?
That looks like it would be delightful as an orange loaf cake. I may have to try it by adding orange and a citrus glaze. Thank you!
vanilla cake recipe?
Ah, the complete opposite of what I was thinking. Worth a shot!
vanilla cake recipe?
I agree. I think an egg white cake may help. I use Nielson-Masey paste and always up the vanilla! I love the flavor.
vanilla cake recipe?
I think the issue is that many vanilla cake recipes contain 4 eggs. Hubby thought they tasted eggy too. I think we're just tough critics with desserts. I have yet to find a recipe that we both think is actually worth eating. I'm considering trying a recipe with egg whites. May help?! I feel like I'm searching for the Holy Grail...
vanilla cake recipe?
Yup, fully cooked. I think I have a sensitive palate. I'm pretty finicky about cakes.
vanilla cake recipe?
I have been on a quest for the perfect vanilla cake recipe. Each one I make is too eggy. Full disclosure. I am an extremely tough dessert critic. I don't like Magnolia, Crumbs, Levain and all the other places that wow the masses. I also tried Billy's Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake recipe as suggested on another thread. I tossed them. They smelled like eggs and I was unimpressed. I'm considering taking my favorite chocolate cake recipe and tweaking it. I thought someone here would probably have a terrific recipe. Looking for moist, tender crumb, distinct vanilla flavor and not too eggy. If i want an omlette I'll make one! ;0) Thanks in advance!
Business Dinner Recommendations
Thanks, I may go with Ferreira. I'm not a big fan of offal so the menu seems to be the best bet. Seafood is always a risk but there still seems to be a bit of something for everyone. Europea also has a good cross selection but I agree that it may be a bit too much.
Business Dinner Recommendations
FWIW, the hotel concierge is recommending Decca 77, Cavalli or Ferreira. Any thoughts on these? I'd be looking for a place where we can actually hear our conversation since we'll be discussing business and also where the cuisine is not so "haute" since I don't know the guest's dining preferences. I also found Graziella but the menu looks fairly limited. Thanks!

Business Dinner Recommendations
Greetings,
I'm looking for a nice restaurant for a business dinner in Montreal on a Monday evening. I'm hoping to find something relatively close to the Fairmont hotel. I noticed the Beaver Club is near there but the reviews don't seem to be spectacular. I was also considering Euopea but I don't much about it. It doesn't have to be super high end or haute cuisine, just good food and good wine. Thanks!
Chinese Recommendation
Thanks everyone for all of the great suggestions. We went to Red Egg but they were closing a bit early that night so we didn't get a chance to try it. (We stayed a the party much later than we expected.) I do have a terrific list of options for the next time we are in Chinatown!

Chinese Recommendation
Thanks I've heard good things about south china garden but I don't think I can get the man to go. It looks a little too divey for him but I may have that wrong? (Although he did used to eat at Wo Hop years ago!) Any thoughts on Shanghai Asian Manor? I used to like Canton but that's long gone.

Chinese Recommendation
Looking for a nice Chinese recommendation. We'll be in Soho for an event and would like to go for Chinese afterward. It can't be a hole in the wall since the SO won't go. He has a queasy stomach and little tolerance if he sees food prep without gloves. We also don't eat pork so hopefully any suggestions will have plenty of Chicken options. Anywhere downtown would be fine. Thanks in advance.
Bostonians, need a little help please
Thanks for all of the terrific options. I've heard Neptune is good. I just haven't had a chance to make over there yet. I'll probably check out Uni and Troquet plus the Bistro above. Must - try - artichoke. Thanks!
Bostonians, need a little help please
All you had to say was artichoke. That word puts me in a hypnotic trance.
Bostonians, need a little help please
Troquet sounds like a great option. I do love my wine. Perhaps a nice steak or a French bistro? Japanese/sushi is always a hit with me too. I might end up at Market if it's late but I might be in trouble since I just saw that it's restaurant week.
Bostonians, need a little help please
Hello there Boston Chowhounders! If I promise not to talk about the Yankees, will you point me toward some good restaurants near my hotel? I'm up on business, so eating at the bar is always okay. I like any type of cuisine, so no limitations. I'm staying at the W on Stuart St. Thanks!
Birthday Dinner Recommendations
Good point as I haven't been to RW in a long while except for lunch. Thanks.
Birthday Dinner Recommendations
I just realized the birthday falls during Restaurant Week. Score!
Birthday Dinner Recommendations
Looks like another terrific option. Dining room looks lovely too. Thank you!
Birthday Dinner Recommendations
Thanks, I considered Tocqueville but was teetering since the reviews on Yelp seem very mixed. But since Chowhounders never steer me wrong it sounds like a good option. It looks absolutely beautiful.
Am I crazy for thinking that Magnolia cupcakes suck?
No, they are completely over-rated. I make better cupcakes at home. Actually thinking on that a bit more I'd prefer Duncan Hines over Magnolia.
Birthday Dinner Recommendations
Greetings,
I'm looking for a birthday dinner recommendations. Nothing too stuffy (i.e. jacket required) or overly expensive (i.e. Per Se). I'll be going to Blue Hill in February for another dinner, so that's out. I haven't yet had the opportunity to try Perilla and have been wanting to for a while now. We have one picky eater on board who's a "chick-a-tarian" (only poultry or vegetables), so some of the more adventurous menus are out. I was also considering Grammercy Tavern since it's been years since I went. Any other recommendations? I'm okay with something low key and it doesn't have to be the typical celebration spots. Thanks!

Funeral Luncheon near Paramus/Ridgewood
Seeking a place for a late luncheon following a funeral. There will probably be about 20-25 adult and a hand full of children. Thanks!
Italian Food - Good, simple fare. Does it exist?
Looking for something downtown but it's not a necessity since we are all traveling from all parts. 5 in the party. Thanks.

Thanks Erica. Rustic in my view = simple preparation. Not too trendy. Probably redundant since I already said "simple" :0).
