Dim Sum in the 'burbs?

I've been to Lin Garden twice. I onlywent because it was the closest place for dim sum (until recently). Its not that flavorful and if you get there late things arent fresh. China Pearl or any place in Chinatown is much better (more turnover, more fresh items), but for the location and if you dont want to drive all the way into the city, it will suffice. Good place for a newbie, but I wouldn't go out of my way to bring friends from Hong Kong there...

Cheap eats in Portland

I don't remember but found it doing a google. There is only 1 Salvadorian place in Portland

What's good in Newmarket, NH?

Appreciate the full disclosure. you'd be surprised that restaurant owners who lurk in CH promoting their businesses and who give lackluster reviews to competition. Unethical!

Full disclosure: I have no association with Get the Scoop. She does a nice job. She shops every 1-2 days (fresh ingredients) so there is no Sysco truck delivering food. she stocks things that certain customers like (she had 2 customers in for lobster rolls) and one thing she offers that Silver Moon doesn't is all you can eat desert crepes at certain times for $5-$6 dollars! I had 2 nutela crepes, my friend had 3! I now go here 1-2x a week and I'm always satisfied and I like your family friend even more. What a nice friendly welcoming owner! I always ask her when she is movng to Durham (as a joke).

What's good in Newmarket, NH?

Thanks for the full disclosure. I know for a fact some restaurant owners lurk on CH promoting their restos and giving negative review of competition. Unethical.

My full disclosure: I have no connection to the owner of Get the Scoop. I can add that I go twice a week and I enjoy her crepes. She shops every 1-2 days so the ingredients are fresh (no Sysco restaurant food deliveries). She also supports NH businesses by selling NH soda and catsup.

One thing she has that the Silver Moon in Dover does not have is all you an eat desert crepes during certain days (times)? of the week. I took advantage and had 2 Nutella repes yesterday (my friend had 3!). she also stocks things certain customers like.. an elderly couple was in there ordering lobster rolls.

So nice people, fresh ingredients and if you want it an all you can eat crepe experience for $5-6. A+++

Get the Scoop is the creperie in Newmarket. When I have the urge for a crepe I head over there from Dover. Its my new go to place. Owner is delightful. We should support her business.

Best Meat Pie in Australia?

I still shed a tear everytime I think of the lamb shank pie at the Village Baker in Burnside, SA (suburb east of Adelaide).. It was truly amazing:

what foods does your city have that mine doesn't?

When I lived in Adelaide, South Australia, the locals were fond of pie floaters, especially after the pubs closed and you needed food in you prior to going home. Take a traditional meat pie, flip it upside down on top of pea soup and splash tomato sauce (catsup) on top. Yum. When I get the craving I go to the Tuc Shop in NYC and ask them to float my pie. Heaven.

pork belly in nh?

Great european style coffee shop in Portsmouth: Kaffee Vonsolln

Hi folks

I wanted to get the word out on a great European style coffee shop in Portsmouth: Kaffee Vonsolln. He has been open for 5 months. The coffee is EXCELLENT -- he roasts his coffee beans in house and he has a unique selection of homemade European style deserts (apfel streudel anyone)? They also have sandwiches and cocktails (which I've never tried).

Nice owner, nice crowd, relaxed atmosphere. Check it out. My only gripe.. the wireless hasn't been working of late, but I heard him make plans with a customer to install a new router. I think local establishments like this should be supported! Check it out and pass the word around!

If you speak German on sunday afternoons I see a group of folks that sit together and speak German.

Hi All

Can anyone recommend a place that stocks a good selection of kosher wine for passonver in the NH Seacoast? Anything but manishewitz (blech). LOL.

Also, if anyone knows of a place in the area that sells Coopers beer (Australian beer thats kosher) would be good to know!

Suggestions for 3 days in Adelaide?

cibo's is for an afternoon cuppa or gelato.. well done...
for Indian.. I love Shanker's.... this is where I go with Indian mates when I'm in town.. classy resto, excellent food.. find out when they have chili crab night and go.. owner is Indian/Tamil from Singapore.. yummy food.. omg.. one of the best in the city..

Id also say go to Addis Ababa cafe for Ethiopian food.. good value, great taste, try not to fill up on the ingera bread.

Finally.. after a few too many beers (find a nice hotel in north Adelaide).. go to the 24 hour bakery on O'Connel street for a pie floater. I miss pie floaters in ADL and was chagrined when they moved the pie carts away from the railway when them extended the Glenelg tram to UNISA. Was told the pie vendors are now on Victoria Square? But O'Connell St was much closer to where I lived.

In Adelaide wander around Melbourne street for nice eateries. I like the Lion Hotel and the Cafe on the Corner. also stop at Cikolate for coffee/tea and deserts.

Filipino Cuisine in Jersey City

Everytime I come down from New England I like to stop at the Philippine Bread House. Its as good as any Manila turo-turo and more than satisfies me when I get the urge for the taste of home. All my pinoy friends go there and/or get their catered food from there. Their baked goods are also first rate.

Any Dim Sum in Maine? Portland maybe?

Its not Maine but Yummy Garden in Dover, NH is closer. .They serve dim sum lunch time Sunday - Monday. There is a thread on it on CH.

Tuck Shop – Delicious Australian Meat Pies in the East Village

Having moved from Adelaide, the Tuck Shop is where I go when I'm missing Oz and have a craving for a traditional pie floater. Their meat pies are very similar to the average meat pies that I'd buy in Oz (and NZ), but I like their pie floaters, especially when consumed with a bottle of Coopers Pale Ale. Yum. It made this homesick South Australian very happy.

They now have a second location in Manhattan so I guess their business is doing all right..

I new to the Portland, ME area and wanted to know if there are any REAL Dim Sum places?

you don't have to go to Boston for dim sum. The closest dim sum is across the border in Dover, NH: Yummy Garden on Central Avenue. They serve pretty good dim sum.

Sunshine Oriental Restaurant - Dim Sum in Concord NH

I just ate at Sunny and wrote a comparison with the dim sum restaurant in Dover, NH (Yummy Garden):

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/751477?tag=search_results;results_list

Basically I felt Yummy Garden in Dover had better dim sum, closest to what I've had in NYC and HK, BUT I liked the real Chinese options at Sunny.

Since these restaurants do not compete with each other (due to distance). I say let's support both and get the word out to ensure they exist (we don''t need another god awful buffet place). Friendly helpful staff at both places help recommending them!

Dim Sum at Yummy Garden in Dover, NH

I just got back from Sunshine Oriental in Concord, NH for dim sum:
- their hau gao (shrimp dumplings) were not as plump and juicy as Yummy's
- their Chiao Siu Bau had less filling and a tad drier than Yummy's
- their siu mai (pork/shrimp dumpling) were good, but I give the nod to Yummy's

So as far as dim sum goes... YUMMY WINS! It's dim sum is almost as good as any I've had in NY's Chinatown and in Hong Kong.

HOWEVER, Sunny had items on the menu that were more typical Chinese. I was SO HAPPY to see fried rice with salty dried fish and chcken.. when I lived in Australia I found this hole in the wall takeway that was patronized by an all Chinese clientele and it was my favourite dish. I always had it and I always craved more.. Sunny's WINS on this one! Funny how global food can be... someone encountering Chinese food in NH that brought back happy memories of life down under!

Both restaurants have nice staff! I'd support both. There's room in NH for both and we should patronize these establishments.. hopefully they'll stay open and will reduce the risk. I'd hate to see them close and perhaps be replaced by another Gosh awful bland Chinese buffet!

Dim Sum at Yummy Garden in Dover, NH

We had planned to have dim sum in Woburn, MA today but plans changed and we decided to eat local and went to Yummy Garden in Dover, NH (914 Central Ave) and all of us were pleasantly surprised. It was quite good. They had 24 items to select from the menu, not on a cart. Items we ordered included Chia Siu Bau (steamed pork buns), ha gao (shrimp dumpling), siu mai (pork/meat dumplings), rice steamed in lotus leaf, turnip cakes, etc. It was probably the best turnip cake I've had. Everything was good and tasted fresh. I've had plenty of dim sum in NY and Hong Kong and this place was pretty good!

Thought it be worth it to pass the word around. The owners are really nice and friendly. It would be a shame if we lost the only place for dim sum on the seacoast!
