family needs local places to eat

Hi Chaz,

What type of food does Willy's serve?

Decent cup of tea?!!!!!... anyone

Loved, your description- which tea blend did you try? Those bags are fantastic - they don't affect the flavour of the tea and normally use whole leaves = superior flavour. will look out for TF bags.

Hi kathryn, would you recommend the Bo Ssam. Is a whole pork butt the same as any other or does Momofuku treat it differently? I am trying to get my head around the whole concept. My kids love BBQ pork ribs so I thought they would quite enjoy the slow cooked pork butt.

My sister-in-law and I first saw those long tea bags at the Fairmont in Whistler this year and were most impressed. We tried to buy some or at least get the supplier name but they were not too forthcoming - they did sell us their wonderful tea though and gave us a small supply of those little envelope bags. I wonder if the specialty tea stores would sell them.. not quite as good as brewing in the pot but definitely more convenient...

So is Daisy May's whole pork butt comparable to the Bo Ssam?

Would anyone recommend taking the children to Momofuka Ssam for the Bo Ssam? I've been reading some rather passionate reviews bagging the service but praising the food. It sounds very different - incomparable to anything I am familiar with.

Hi MMRuth, I really appreciate your scouting around for me and your kind offer to loan me a teapot. I hadn't thought about picking a teapot up in NY - it is hard enough to find places that serve proper tea. I have a little teapot that I will bring with me and if I need a bigger one for the family, I'll pick one up there, but thank you again. The hotel is called The Marmara. Oh, and in answer to when I need a tea fix, I suppose - every couple of hours from breakfast onwards...

Thank you for your suggestions rteplow. I am a bit puzzled by the cold room - is this for us to cool down in - or for food to cool down in if its too hot? And is this cold room at Fairway or in the Dinosaur BBQ. My experience of cold rooms is from working in restaurants as walk-in refrigerators and given how hot it can get in the city - I would be hiding out in the cold room too. Maybe it is getting lost in translation but it has given me a chuckle in any case.

Wow! Thanks Kathryn, I had searched for "tea" before I posted my note, I don't know why this hadn't come up. Are these English tea houses - they sound Asian?

Hi MMRuth, Thank you for your reply. Are you wondering at what time of day I will need my tea fix, or when as in next week? I will be in NY in September so I have a bit of time. I have been able to locate Alice's tea room and Tea with Sympathy but as we will be in different neighbourhoods on different days, I thought I would put the question out there so I can compile a list of go-to places. Last time I was in NY - I was given tea made with coffee instead of hot water... it was funny at the time.. To be honest I don't really fancy carrying around a teapot and tea leaves with me... I have checked and the hotel does have a kettle.

I'm thinking I may have to bring my own pot and tea leaves. Apart from the big hotels - if I just want a cup of tea in anything other than a paper cup... where can I find one anywhere uptown, midtown or downtown? all suggestions appreciated.

Best Canoli in Manhattan

Pesche are not really like tiramisu - though it is a similar concept (sponge + custard). Tiramisu is made with a raw egg based, zabaglione and mascarpone filling. However, it must be that the Italians in Brisbane were the only ones with this variety of Cannoli. Melbourne only has ricotta based ones too - Bernadetti's are sensational. Maybe these were renegade cannoli but there were a lot of Sicilians around who made the same type of cannoli. Perhaps because I grew up with the custard variety, the ricotta ones just dont do it for me... but I am willing to try.

50th & Broadway - drinks/light fare with efficient service

I don't know if this is too dated but Milos is very good too. Service is excellent and if they convince you to try the Ice Wine between courses go for it!

Best Canoli in Manhattan

I figured as much, I tried to find this type of cannolo a few years ago in NY - given the prevalence of Italian bakeries but I got the same reaction - as if I had two heads. Its the same type of filling Italians put in their bigne (profiterole), or pesche - two dome shaped cake sponges with a bit of marsala, or tia maria soaked into the centre that is then joined together by a custard filling, rolled in pink sugar crystals to resemble a furry peach, with a leaf stuck on top - except its slightly thicker - similar to the french creme pattisiere. I'll give the CH's suggestions a try though.

Best grilled fish

It may have been Milos - it ended in an os. It was ages ago so dont know if they are still open. The waiter recommended Inniskillen Canadian ice wine between courses which was the most amazing palate cleanser...

Best Canoli in Manhattan

Thanks Kathryn - do you know if they do the custuardy filling or the ricotta? We had a great local place that did the best lemon cream filling with a touch of Strega - di- vine.. After 40 years the children took over the business and now they make gelati only.....

We will definitely do the Korean BBQ for something different. We have a Benihana close by. We love dumplings.

Is Sylvia's better than Amy Ruth's? When is the best time to go? I've been told to do breakfast at Sylvia's. Any dishes you would recommend?
