Looking for great pizza place in Sherman Oaks/Studio City Area
I hear that the owner says that 8 1/2 is too small a space, and is only licensed for beer and wine. So he would have had to go through the whole process again to obtain a full bar license, and face the same opposition from Vitello's.

RIP 81/2. It mercifully closed its doors last month.
The bad news - Little Dom's was supposed to open later this year in the same neighborhood, but the perenially bland Vitello's led the charge against any competition. I'm told that the owner of Vitello's is a realtor with ties to the zoning board.

I'll second the Pizza Connection as a good neighborhood joint. No ambiance, but nice people, good thin crust, and they'll even make a whole wheat pie for that weird cousin on a special diet.

Fried Chicken Spot in North Hollywood?
Me too - if you get a good Popeye's franchise holding true to the original recipe, it's some of the best around.
Many years ago I was with someone who was interviewing Paul Prudhomme, and she asked him what he liked to eat when he went out. He named his wife's cooking (good answer!) or a bucket of chicken from Popeye's.
RESTAURANT SUPPLY IN L.A.?
Hey thanks, SMC. That's a new one on me - looking forward to checking it out.
RESTAURANT SUPPLY IN L.A.?
Sorry, I've been MIA off the board here for quite some time. So let me answer this, one year late.
I bought a digital timer/InstaRead thermometer at Surfa's for about $30., got it home, and discovered that the start/stop switch didn't work. I took it back a few days later, unused, receipt in hand, looking to exchange it for a non-defective version of the same timer. The clerk told me they don't take returns. I asked for the manager on duty, who said something to the effect of "we're a mom and pop store, we can't afford to replace defective items, you'll have to contact the manufacturer." That's as much time as I was willing to waste on a $30 item, so I left and have never been back.
RESTAURANT SUPPLY IN L.A.?
Any suggestions on a decent restaurant supply house in L.A., for the well-equipped home kitchen?
Star in Van Nuys is OK, but limited, and I won't go back to Surfa's after they sold me a defective InstaRead thermometer and then refused to replace it. ("We don't guarantee what we sell" was the gist of the message.)
I'm looking for a good source for workhorse pots and pans mostly, and the occasional small appliance.
New Cajun/Creole in NoHo
Best oyster poboy I'd ever had outside of Louisiana. But it looks like they closed after a few months, and despite the "reopening soon" signs, never resuscitated. Does anybody know if the cook surfaced anywhere?
