Visiting The Villages, FL and looking for good restaurants
It has been three years since I have been to the Villages, but I agree the area is not very "chow-ish". You may want to drive over to Mt. Dora, a turn of last century tourist town less than an hour away. Several nice cafes, as I remember. My other expereince is that at the Thai restaurants let them know you are looking for authentic dishes and they will turn up the flavor quite a bit.
Food Network Does It Again
Thanks for all the laughs. I knew this would generate some good comments. What;s next from FN- a recipe for a bowl of cereal????

Cuban in Central Florida or Tampa Area
We will be kicking around central Florida and Tampa/ St. Pete and would appreciate some recommendations for Cuban restaurants. We love everything from food carts to sit down, all would be most appreciated. Also, it has been a decade since I dined at the Columbia in Ybor City, any thoughts on that location and the others throughout the area? Thanks!
Durant's Phoenix Mushroom Challenge
The boyfriend (Big Mike) just got back to Charlotte NC from a baseball spring training trip with the guys and has challenged me to recreate the mushroom he had while dining at Durant's. The menu has not given me any clues and Big Mike has just given me a few descriptives, dark, spicy and rich. I searched on the web, without any luck. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!
Pathetic state of burgers in Winston and Greensboro
True about the 155 degrees, but I have found that restauramts that grind their own beef may be open to lighter cooking. That said, results have oftentimes been dissapointing. carolinadawg, where did you hear abut the possible changing of the law? I would be willing to start some sort of campaign just to be able to get a true medium rare burger without having to drive to SC or Va.
Garten and Kimball
Is is just me or are the recipes and techniques from Ina and Chris starting to look the same? Or could it be that they are some of the best on TV and it is good common sense and professional food prep?
Giacomo Italian in Greensboro
Anyone know if Giacomo's market is still on High Point Road? It's been awhile since I have been up to Greeensboro and I am getting conflicting info from web. We get some of his products in Charlotte, but not the variety he carried at the store. Thanks
High Speed Feery from WI to Mi
Thanks- we will try to pick up some grub in Bay View. Our time window is narrow but I expect we will be starving from our travels that morning.
High Speed Feery from WI to Mi
Anyone familiar with the food choices aboard the ferry from milwaukee to muskegon? we will be taking the mid-day crossing, after traveling in from the east coast that morning. Thanks!

There was a Groupon for the "new" Penguin last week..... The lines of people are all down the street at the Diamond.
Grocery and Alcoholic Beverage Stores in Nova Scotia
Thanks CanadaGirl. We are very excited about this trip. A couple of us are "Canadaphiles" and we have had Nova Scotia on our radar for about 5 years. Any must do or sees that you could share? we really like to do just about anything, but most important we like to experience our destination to the fullest and do not go out for fancy restaurant, resorts, etc. Thanks again.
everyday foods in Charlotte? off Carmel Road
Just had lunch at Trio Terra yesterday. Ditto the comment on inventive menu and excellent quality ingredients.
Grocery and Alcoholic Beverage Stores in Nova Scotia
Thanks growing gourmet. We will be in NS celebrating the 50th birthdays of three of our friends (there will be five of us) and we most likely will be drinking a fair amount of wine. We lean toward the dry reds and whites, and we unfortunately do not have an unlimited budget for the grape. I do not have a handle on the wines of NS so any guidance is greatly appreciated, as well as tips on where we may find the best wine deals. We are very adventurous, along the lines of dry style wines. Thanks so much.
Korean in Charlotte
Anyone have a recommendation for Korean restaurants in Charlotte?
Grocery and Alcoholic Beverage Stores in Nova Scotia
Thanks Greg. Do you have any suggestions on reasonably priced interesting wines?
Grocery and Alcoholic Beverage Stores in Nova Scotia
We will be traveling to Nova Scotia in early September and are looking for grocery recommendations. We will be flying into Halifax and spending a week exploring the north and south shores from Northwest Cove. We then have a second week in Cape Breton, where we will be staying in Port Hood. Any suggestions on grocery stores as well as unique purveyors of local fare? We have rented houses so we will have kitchens where we plan to take breakfast and our eveing meals. Lastly, is it correct that all alcoholic beverages for home consumption must be purchased at the Nova Scotia Liquor stores? Thanks!
Suggestions for Charlotte, NC - new places to try
OK- so finally there is some press on Bistro La Bon.

Settle a bet? Prettiest restaurant in Charlotte.
Agree on both Fig Tree and Carpe Diem. The artistry on the wood at Carpe Diem makes it a one of a kind in Charlotte and the renovation at the Fig Tree bought the Lucas House back to it's roots, on steroids. Elizabeth is fortunate to have both of these restaurants, with great food as well.

need unpretentious special occasion dining option in Charlotte (south park)
Take a look at Georges Brassierre in the Piedmont Row complex at SouthPark. I had lunch there this week and they have a very traditional brassierre menu and service. Great attention to detail and preparation, and nice space. It may be a little loud, but it recently opened and i do not think they are getting the crowds yet.
Need tuna packed in jar with olive oil - Charlotte, NC
Ditto Pasta and Provisions. You may also try Ferrucci's if you are north and I also think there is an Italian butcher in Waxsaw (south) but I cannot remember the details. Another thought would be to call Dean and DeLuca.
Moving to Charlotte. Afraid of the food
My previous dinners at Bistro La Bon have been fanatastic and I am happy to report that they now serve lunch M- Sat. For $10 you get a choice of 10 entrees, plus bread and salad. The offerings include you choice from two of each: pasta, salad, seafood, meat, sandwich or salad. I just had the NC trout with herbed potato anna and chardonney sauce. GREAT! They are on facebook at Bistro La Bon. 1322 Central Ave.

Please try Bistro La Bon, in the strip mall at the intersection of Pecan and Central in Plaza Midwood. They are now serving lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. Food is great, with reasonable prices and good wine list. Creative bistro fare, with great sauces. We licked our plates clean.....
