David Chang's Lucky Peach Magazine in DC
They actually had about a dozen copies at Kramerbooks!
David Chang's Lucky Peach Magazine in DC
Does anyone know if any stores are carrying David Chang's new quarterly food magazine "Lucky Peach"? It just came out Wednesday and I'd like to get my hands on one.
If anyone happens to see one in the area, it would be great to be notified!
Bethesda suggestions
Not sure about the beer (or if you'd even want it), but Passage to India is the best food I've had in Bethesda. The cilantro chicken (chutney ni murgi) is unlike anything I've had before. They also have a great lunch special if you're not sure you want to do a full on dinner there.

College Park restgaurant for midweek lunch
I haven't checked in a couple of weeks, but Jungle Grille had closed down earlier this year.
My suggestions would be Ledo's or Franklin's (as mentioned above) if you're looking for a nicer lunch, or Marathon Deli if you just want a sandwich or gyro.
Avoid Adele's in the student union. It is overpriced and pretty awful (coming from someone who has gone to UMD for the past 4 years). Plato's is also mediocre, and if you just want a sandwich or chili and don't mind driving 2 minutes, I suggest the Hard Times Cafe up Rt. 1 (north of the university) in the Shoppers Food Warehouse plaza.

Medium Rare
Absolutely. Based on my experience, I would highly recommend it. I haven't eaten *too* many steak-frites, but I have eaten a lot of food and I'm definitely trying to work this into my schedule again soon : )
Medium Rare
Yes, it's just the sirloin cap steak. I've read that they don't plan to add to their menu, save a rotating vegetarian option, so cap steak it is!
New Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd Quarter 2011 [old]
Yea: I've been really into their prepared vegetarian Indian food that comes in those foil packets in boxes. The chickpeas, lentils, and eggplant are all quite good. Was not too into something that was more of a "vegetable medley" -- super mushy.
Nay: I made the lemon-pepper pappardelle last night. Tasted like spicy dish soap. I also am not into the chicken sausages.
Medium Rare
My boyfriend and I went this past Saturday (opening weekend) and had a fantastic experience, minus some service issues that I'm going to chalk up to it being the first weekend they were open. Obviously you know what you're getting, the only question they ask is how you like your steak, and it's "go" from there. The bread was super crusty, and the salad had a delicious mustardy vinaigrette. Then, the main event. My cap steak was cooked perfectly (medium) and super tender. It's served with this "secret sauce" that's more of a gravy. Whatever it was, it was delicious. The fries were very crispy and golden. All in all, it ruled. Then, servers come around with a hot plate with more steak and fries if you'd like a second serving (how can you say no almost?) and leave you a little pot of the sauce.
For $19.50 (nineteen fifty oh my god) it almost couldn't be a better situation. Desserts are additional, but massive. Can't speak for the wine/beer list because I didn't drink.
The only issues we had were regarding service, but again that's forgiveable the first weekend. The timing in between the courses was really off, and servers seemed really scattered like they had no idea which plates were going to which tables, which tables had/hadn't gotten seconds, etc. Also, the temperatures on our second serving were not what we had asked for, but it ended up being a good thing because the rarer steak was better.
As far as the reservations, we had one for 10pm on a Saturday, but it wasn't that crowded when we got there. It was definitely full, but there wasn't much of a wait for the patrons who didn't have reservations.
Sorry this is so long! Hope it is helpful to fellow Chowhounders.
Donuts in D.C.
I'm looking for some great donuts in DC and found this thread and thought I might revive it for any new additions? Some of these seem to be closed or defunct now. I am specifically looking for donuts that you can carry out by the half dozen or dozen, as opposed to on a brunch menu.
New restaurant.com deals at some really great restaurants: $2 for $25 gift certificates
Ahh awesome tip! Thank you so much. Usually they have bad choices that aren't worth it, but I grabbed quite a few : )
DC Restaurant Week-January 2011
I went for lunch for RW two years ago. If I remember correctly, there were 3 apps, 3 entrees, and 2 dessert options. Options were pretty underwhelming - a cuban sandwich, a veggie quesadilla, and a fish as entrees, and I think soup/salad for apps. It wasn't a bad meal, but didn't seem like a great deal.

mini desserts
My birthday is next week and I was thinking about doing the dessert tasting menu at coco sala. Have you had it? Did you have the 3-course or 5-course one?
Also, do you know what the vibe of that place is? I heard that it gets a kind of night-club-y feel on the weekends. My birthday is Friday night so we'd probably be going late in the evening.
Reception for a food-obsessed bride in Cleveland
I ate at The Greenhouse Tavern on Sunday and a family had rented it out that evening for their daughter's 16th birthday party. I'm not sure what the price would be on that but they seemed to be well organized and didn't have to close the restaurant for the whole day to prepare or anything, so perhaps you could just rent it for a couple of hours. Oh, and the food is divine.
I'm not sure if they have experience with big parties (or if they have a room to accomodate - I've only eaten in one room there), but L'Albatros is right in University Circle, and I think their lunch menu is excellent and so reasonable.

Michael Symon - overhyped/overexposed?
Yeah - "How To Cook Like An Iron Chef." I'm not really peeved about his involvement with it, I guess I'm just more nervous because Food Network has really gone so far downhill so fast and I think the majority of their personalities are kind of a joke at this point. I'd hate to see him fall into that category by default :-/
Michael Symon - overhyped/overexposed?
I think it's great that he's staying local and true to where he believes in. I think when "celebrity" chefs start opening these mega-restaurant hot-spots, it just becomes a brand. While I would obviously like to see him succeed wherever he decides to go, I am not about to complain about having too much Michael Symon in my backyard. While I understand the criticism (and am pretty peeved about his new Cooking Channel show), believe in him and his food and his passion
Family-friendly restaurant around Cleveland, OH
I second Luigi's. Good pizza (actually the best I've found in the area - I recently moved here), good atmosphere. You might want to arrive for an earlier dinner, because they can get very crowded on the weekends, with lines forming outside.
Roti: New Mediterranean place opening next door to Breadline in April
Oof thanks for the heads up! I also received the coupon (I bet everyone who entered did...) and I looked at the menu and sort of assumed it would be the falafel "side" not a falafel pita. Still interested to try this place out, but bummed about this review.
Anyone eaten anything besides falafel?
DC Trip Report – Feb 2010 (long)
How much are the Rasika tasting menus?
Excellent report! Thank you!
What restaurant are you excited about for DC's restaurant week?
Yes very true ... it's probably time to do a little dreaded shopping anyways : )
Not sure if we'll go because we're thinking of a couple of other places but thanks for the tips.
Yeah, I'm not really one to feel out of place but I figured it was possible that it might be a bunch of business professionals and then ... us ... whereas when we did Vidalia and PS 7's last year it was a very diverse mix of people.
What restaurant are you excited about for DC's restaurant week?
Thanks! Yeah we were planning to do lunch but will probably go somewhere else instead (not due to dress code or anything). I knew they wouldn't be lax just for RW but I thought I had read in another thread that someone went without a jacket and it was fine (maybe it was for lunch).
What restaurant are you excited about for DC's restaurant week?
Is a jacket really necessary anymore? I have heard great things about The Prime Rib for RW and would like to capitalize on the offer and take my boyfriend there but we are young (college) and I'm not even sure he owns a jacket. I know that we'll stick out like a sore thumb anyways, so does anyone have any insight into jacket/no jacket, etc. We'll obviously dress up (business casual).
Give Us Your Summer 2009 Restaurant Week Review
I'm very sorry to hear that you had such a terrible experience! I went for lunch and my boyfriend and I really enjoyed it ... the portions were small but after almost 2 hours of eating and drinking we were stuffed. I think that lunch sounds like it might have been a more satisfying option.
I agree that the rabbit mortadella was short of good. I did think the vinaigrette was wonderful, though. I too had the shrimp and grits and my shrimp were cooked perfectly. Honestly, they might have been the best-cooked shrimp I have ever had. My grits were also perfect ... creamy but not too much, and not thin. The shrimp to grits ratio was also very satisfying. My boyfriend had the monkfish and while I was not huge on the fish, the pine needle reduction they were served under was truly awesome, and I have been thinking about the spinach-mushroom gnudi ever since. I also agree that dessert might have been the best part ... we had the chocolate peanut butter crunch bar (I did think that the caramelized banana was a little too much, though), and the pecan bar was perfect.
Our service was excellent and the timing was great. They didn't try to rush us out, even though we were enjoying a late, leisurely lunch and the restaurant was fairly empty by the time we were done.
Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans and reviews
Nevermind, they're up online now.
Has anyone had their short ribs? (PS 7's that is)
Favorite Cereals (No Mix-Ins)
YES! It was always "Dad's cereal" but then my mom started packing it in my lunches. Such a good snack. I recently bought a box of it last year and ate it as a late-night studying treat.
Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans and reviews
I acutally have lunch which could be more "worth it" depending on the selections ...
Elyssa - Could you please post lunch if you have time? I would appreciate it immensely! Thanks for emailing them. :-)
Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans and reviews
You're right Jeserf. I guess that I am just less-than-wowed by their apps in general. Can't speak though, I've never been.
And yes, that surprised me, too.
Favorite Cereals (No Mix-Ins)
I still eat it out of the box, sans milk!!! See my post above haha
Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans and reviews
Oooh thank you! I'm less-than-wowed by the selection of apps, but the rest sounds good. Anyone that will serve me pork two ways in one dish is a-okay in my book.
Diners Drive Ins Drives visited Cleveland - Where did they film?
Beachland Ballroom is a concert venue with a bar and a vintage store in the basement. I've been for a few shows and based on the atmosphere of the tavern during the shows I couldn't really imagine going purely for the food. But! I have heard nothing but good things about the food and they have a new-ish Sunday brunch with a DJ which could be fun and cool for your son. It's in an interesting little art district with vintage and record shops and a retro feel. They recently did a Rock 'n' Roll Barbecue with tons of local chefs, so clearly food is a passion of theirs, not just the music.
I have not been to Parkview, but yes, it is a nightclub, BUT it's open for lunch and for Sunday brunch so I wouldn't rule it out on that alone. Did you see that they put DDD pictures up on their site? Pretty cool...
