New Year's & Anniversary dinner in Sausalito?

Reporting back:
LeGarage for an excellent lunch with a bowl of mussels & Bouillabaisse.
New Year's Eve dinner at Poggio was just the ticket - thank you for the suggestion. We kicked things off with the house made burrata with a sun dried tomato puree and grilled bread. We could have made of night of it with this first course alone. By the time we got to dessert, it arrived candle-lit and on the house with a "happy anniversary." A memorable evening all around, thanks to your suggestions.

New Year's & Anniversary dinner in Sausalito?

My husband & I will be celebrating a 30 year anniversary this New Year's Eve. We'll be staying at the Inn Above Tide in Sausalito for 2 nights, and are unfamiliar with dining destinations in that area. Suggestions? Especially for dinner. Thanks!

Pt. Reyes in mid-October

One more endorsement of Stellina - we had dinner there a few weeks ago and the food is everything everybody says it is. I had a buttermilk blackberry ice cream for dessert that was (I don't use this word lightly) a revelation. Downside? Tables are crowded together, it was very warm inside and our server was oddly distracted and abrupt until I started asking her about the ice cream which she adored. Dress ranged from casual (we were in our hiking jeans) to fancy. They also do weekend brunch.

Cherries are here !!!

I just spoke with Missy Gotelli, of Joe Gotelli & Sons yesterday. They grow cherries as far south as Bakersfield, up through the valley and even in the state of Washington. Missy manages cherry sales at some 40 farmers markets through the Bay Area, Davis and Sacramento. Her season is from the first of May through end of June.

She had Golden Rainiers and Brooks available last week - the Brooks were super sweet -and no doubles in my basket - but Missy says they will probably only be available another week at most. She confirmed that her Brooks & Golden Rainiers were from Kern County.

When I asked her about the impact of our cool weather on her crop, she said that it didn't affect the cherries from Kern County, and the impact on crops further north was that rain damage (which causes cracking) was minimal, while the cooler weather allows the cherries to "size properly."

Late lunch near Oakland Museum?

Forgot to add: Cafe does not take credit cards, bring cash. There is an ATM nearby, but you don't want to wait to find that out after standing in line to place your order

Late lunch near Oakland Museum?

Reporting back: Museum make-over & friendly staff & volunteers get an A+. However Museum Cafe is not yet ready for prime time. I will revisit in a couple of weeks and just plan the timing on the trip so that we can get to one of the other restaurants discussed here.

As for the cafe, to be fair, it's not a full-fledged cafe yet. It's essentially a "grill your sandwich" service, and won't be operational until ... July? It took a long time to get sandwiches & salads and big issues with cold coffee, which took forever to re-brew. Very limited menu and several items on the menu were not available. Looks like they could use another sandwich-maker to speed things along. I bet it will be a different place when they have an actual kitchen. The people working there were trying very hard, and apologetic for various delays & mishaps. And, at least you can get something to eat on-site...which, as it turned out, was as much as we could manage today.

And finally, a very nice museum staffer/volunteer asked the two of us if we were the ones from Sacramento, recognizing us from this Chowhound posting.

Thanks everyone for the excellent suggestions. I so appreciate it & will report back.

Late lunch near Oakland Museum?

As far as what we like - we're both eclectic in our tastes. If she gets tired, we'll probably just do the museum cafe...but since she's an extraordinary cook, and doesn't get out much, it would be nice to take her somewhere special. Maybe a way to rephrase the question is to ask, if there is one restaurant in the area you'd go to above all others...what would it be? (assuming it's open in the late afternoon). It's about the food, and not so much the view for us. Thank you!

Late lunch near Oakland Museum?

Somehow, I missed the cafe info on the OMCA website when I looked at it a couple of weeks ago & and assumed there was no museum cafe. Found it just now, but had had to really navigate around the website to locate it. And now I notice the link posted above...

Late lunch near Oakland Museum?

Coming in from Sacramento tomorrow for a look at the Oakland Museum, and would appreciate suggestions for a post-museum late lunch. I will be traveling with a friend who uses a guide dog, so anything that is a long walk from the museum is probably not do-able, but we can drive assuming disabled parking is nearby. Price not so much a concern - looking for something to make the day memorable & delicious. Thank You!

Oh glorious day! Oh wonderful year! Oh lucky me! I finally, finally, finally get to host Thanksgiving. I banish thee jarred gravy (tell me about your single favorite dish)

Flat-bottomed Fuyu Persimmons, crisp like an apple and sweet like a pear, can be eaten out of hand, sliced into salads or stir-fries, or tossed into pies, crisps and cobblers. You don’t even have to peel a Fuyu. Stores at room temperature for up to three weeks. The brilliant orange flesh, packed with good stuff like fiber, beta-carotene and Vitamin C, does not turn brown when sliced, making it the perfect for holiday fruit trays, salads, etc.

Capannina - Fine Italian Dining on Union Street

Ristorante Capannina was the destination for dinner the other night, thanks to helpful Chowhounders. Four of us - clearly tourists - arrived ridiculously early and not exactly dressed for dinner. No matter. We were welcomed with a glass of wine and given the window table where we could catch our breath and people watch to our heart’s content.

Dinner proceeded to unfold over several lovely hours, beginning with an antipasti of tender Calamari Staffed with Crab and Potato. The specials of the day included a salad of prosciutto-wrapped roasted figs with a balsamic-dressed mix of radicchio and arugula. It was a perfect balance of flavor and texture; sweet and peppery with a buttery accent of gorgonzola.

We proceeded to our main courses, which included Veal Scaloppine with Lemon-Caper Sauce, Braised Short Ribs in a Red Wine Sauce, and two daily specials featuring perfectly cooked duck and a ragu of crushed olives and rabbit served over house-made gnocchi. Portions were generous and the sides were well-prepared, including a spinach & parmesan risotto and goat-cheese mashed potatoes. We were introduced to Aglianico Terredora, a reasonably-priced Campania-region red with woodsy, cherry notes that complemented the assorted flavors of our dinners.

The service was attentive and unobtrusive, with Sergio (lured from the island of Capri by a Santa Rosa girl – but that’s another story) leading a team of servers who cleared plates, filled glasses and respected the relaxed and leisurely pace we’d seem to set for ourselves. As the evening unfolded, a well-heeled crowd of regulars was warmly greeted by owner Michele di Ruocco. But the signore didn’t ignore the sensible-shoe folks at our table, introducing himself and making us feel right at home with a spirited conversation about simmering ragus.

No room for the desserts or cheese plates, so we’ll just have to go back the next time we’re in the city. I should also mention Capannina offers a $25 Prix Fixed Menu featuring three courses, served from 5:00 – 6:00 PM. Capannina is at 1809 Union Street.

Reporting back to say we ended up at Capannina on Union last night for dinner. Four of us agreed that Capannina was one of the best dining experiences ever - thank you for suggesting it. Will post a more detailed review soon.

Rose Cafe for breakfast - mixed bag. Probably would not go back: burned bacon and a missing order of scrambled eggs, with a long wait for their arrival.

Looking for pumpkin pie in greater Sacramento area

Suggestions for Family Reunion Picnic Site?

These are great ideas - thank you!

Suggestions for Family Reunion Picnic Site?

Would appreciate:
1. Suggestions for a location for a small group (8-10 adults) family reunion picnic with people coming from Santa Rosa, Santa Clara, Oakland, Vallejo & Sacramento. Dog-friendly. BBQ -friendly. Some of these family members have never met, so location (besides being drive-able for all) will serve as an ice-breaker.
2. I would be coming in from Sacramento, what should I pick up along the way? (Besides Acme Bread).
