Kat's Profile

Justin Wilson and other lost cooking show classics...

Who was the guy with the PBS cooking show in the late 80s, maybe early 90s, who was accused of child molestation and later died? He had a short white beard, maybe in his 50s, and a younger guy assistant? I used to love his show, he had such a calm, relaxing demeanor. I was so upset when the allegations arose and his show went off the air.

AB No reservations

Been to Finland several times to visit spouse's family. No one in the family practices "cupping" anymore, so not sure how representative that is of the culture now. Saunas, however, are a huge part of being Finnish and ordinary people take them quite often. AB really didn't explore much of the country. Filming in winter also did not portray it in it's best light. Summer with the midnight sun and fresh produce from the extra long days is magical. I was disappointed by the show, but think it fit with AB's dark humor.

J's at Nashoba Valley Winery-outstanding brunch!

I considered making a reservation for Easter brunch, but the website required advance payment by credit card!! I can't recall if it was of the entire amount or a sizeable deposit, but it was enough to make me book elsewhere. I have never, in any country I have visited, been required to pay in advance when making a reservation. To be sure, I have given a cc with knowledge it would be charged a penalty if I were to be a no show, but to actually take payment it in advance? It seemed odd and made me uncomfortable.

Rehearsal Dinner Suggestions - Framingham Area

J's at Nashoba Winery has a private room upstairs and it is in Bolton. Lovely old house surrounded by orchards.

Pub near Lime St. Station, Liverpool with Decent Food

Thank you!

Best of What is in Season in Early July?

Thank you for this info; it is exactly what I needed to know. I am so looking forward to trying some of these specialties, and especially to tasting my first Italian tomato and some fresh melon gelato. I'm glad we'll be able to try Ligurian food too, the lattughe in brodo sounds delicious.

Pub near Lime St. Station, Liverpool with Decent Food

Hi - my spouse is in Liverpool one night for work staying near Lime St. Station. Can someone suggest a pub with decent food within easy walking distance of the station? Thank you.

Best of What is in Season in Early July?

Good point. We'll be visiting Florence, Lerici, Pisa and one day trip somewhere, maybe Monteriggioni, from our base in Pisa.

Best of What is in Season in Early July?

Hello- We'll be in Tuscany in early July and would like to lok for what is fresh and seasonal, particularly for what might be on special in restaurants. Also, I love rabbit and would like to sample several rabbit and also wild boar dishes. However, I generally think of these as heartier dishes more suited to colder months. Would it be foolish to order such dishes in the summer and better to focus on what is actually in season?

Florence, eating near Boboli (review)

I just bookmarked your post for our upcoming trip. Thanks!

Hudson/Marlborough, MA Fish Market Meat Market Farm stand?

Yes, Small Farm is great in the summer! There is also Ferjulian's in Hudson; they offer a mix of their own produce and other items.

Rehearsal Dinner - Holliston MA

Wayside Inn in Sudbury. I had my rehearsal dinner there, in one of the smaller dining rooms with a fireplace. High end fine dining it is not, but it was cozy and rustic, food was good and there was adequate choice for different tastes.

Local Asparagus

Harper Farms on 117 in Leominster/Lancaster had it last weekend.

Nuremberg on the Cheap

Any suggestions? Looking for places with good takeaway food, be it sandwiches or hot food, from a market, cafe, street vendor, etc. Also, where to get the best ice cream? Thank you.

31st birthday!

I had a similar salad several times at AKA Bistro in Lincoln, but I think the egg was poached? That is another good suggestion for the OP, AKA Bistro, since suburbs are OK.

31st birthday!

Whoops! My bad!

31st birthday!

Toro? It seems to me a very buzzy, popular place with good food at a reasonable price, to celebrate a b'day. Happy Birthday!!! Healthy, happy birthdays are the best.

few questions in boston w/kids (times) and foxborough.

1) I always pack a lunch to visit the MOS because the food at the cafe there is expensive and greasy. Greasy pizza, fries, chicken nuggets, etc. Eat a light lunch and enjoy a good dinner elsewhere afterward. There really is not much there that is chow friendly. Pre-packaged sandwiches, bananas, coffee, etc at tthe coffee stand is probably as healthy as it gets there.
2) Summer Shack is at Fresh Pond in Cambridge, far away from Fenway, are you sure this is the place that you meant?
3) Don't know.
4) Yes! ICOB is a great restaurant, it will be fine with kids at that hour, even later. I saw a baby there at 7 p.m. It is a loud, buzzy restaurant, so no worries about interrupting other people's quiet meals.
5) What is " 5 wits" in Foxborough?

Cinco de Mayo - Easy Dish for a Group

OK, so I left it too late to try the slow cooker ideas, but as I use my slow cooker a lot, I have printed them out for future use. I ended up making the Budin Azteca, but substituted ground beef for chicken as it was on a good sale yesterday. Also, the Mexican aisle at my grocery store was decimated by yesterday afternoon, so no tomatillo sauce. Had to make do with enchilada sauce, which I had to spice up because it was really bland. However, it turned out deliciously and the tray was totally wiped clean a the party. Many, many thanks!

Conference Widow's (Longish) Four Day Plan

I would second the suggestion of a harbor cruise (on a nice day). It is a great way to keep sightseeing when you're tired. You can relax, enjoy the view and a good picnic lunch, too. My only other suggestion to you is to not stick by a rigid schedule. I am a total planner too when I travel, but sometimes things happen and you gotta just go with the flow. That said, you seem to have enough ideas of where to go so that no matter where you end up, you will be close to good food.

Cinco de Mayo - Easy Dish for a Group

Thank you for the ideas!

Cinco de Mayo - Easy Dish for a Group

hello- we have been invited to a Cinco de Mayo party where the host is dishing up rice and beans and asked the guests to each bring a potluck dish. I expect that it will need to serve at least 15 people and as I have a full schedule tomorrow, easy to make. Any ideas?

A Game of Either Or

Definitely ICOB. I would also urge you to skip both Durgin Park and Union Oyster House. If you HAVE to go to one, I'd just get some oysters at the bar at Union Oyster and then just hop across the Greenwy to the North End where you can still get the touristy experience (just look at the huge lines outside of Mike's!) and have a decent chance of finding better food.

AKA Bistro

This is our favorite area restaurant. My favorite starter is the frisee salad with its lovely egg, yum.I wish I could afford to eat here every week. Going next for Mother's Day brunch. This restaurant is such a boon to the general culinary wasteland out here.

What foods did you once love but now can’t eat?

Shrimp, lobster and scallops. I developed a shellfish allergy in my 20s. Nowadays, when my spouse has lobster for dinner, I love to breathe in the aroma of the steaming lobster, as it is the closest I can get to eating it!

Florence Dining Advice

Hi - we are two adults and a child (age 9) coming to Florence in July. I am aware that this is a very busy time and need advice about dinners. We have 2 days there. People here seem to recommend booking reservations for dinner, but with a kid and a cranky husband in tow, it is better for us to be able to just choose a restaurant when and where hunger strikes, rather than being bound to a reservation. But, I don't want to get stuck eating bad food out of desperation. I am thinking of the Oltrarno district, hopefully a bit away from the masses, since we'll be visiting the Pitti. Will we be able to walk into an enoteca or trattoria around 7:00 p.m and have dinner without a reservation? Or, do even less casual restaurants need reservations? We'll be skipping the more upscale places. Thank you.

A few questions for Portland / Scarborough

Arabica for coffee. I think i heard that they recently opened a roasting facility. If you are at Duckfat, stop in at Micucci's right nearby for Italian groceries/cheeses, but mostly for the bakery in the back. The luna bread is outstanding and the thick crust pizza is yummy.

Pretentious Foodie Bullsh!t
