Craft Beer Lovers - Input Please

Thanks for everyone's input. We've been to the Happy Gnome but it just didn't work well for us. It was a bit spendy and I don't know... the socializing just didn't happen as much as other venues.

We do not do a buyout. Also, not all 200 people show up at once. However, it has become a challenge as this group has grown and flourished so much since its inception. That's good and bad. lol

So, I'm still searching... If you have other ideas, I'm still listening.

Craft Beer Lovers - Input Please

Looking for a new venue for my Monthly Pint group. Would prefer something in St. Paul or on the East Side. We need a nice selection of beers on tap (The majority being craft beers.) Our group's events average 200 guests so there needs to be space for most of us. A friend suggested Shamrock's but I've never been and completely clueless. Thoughts?

My most recent Pints were held at The Hole near the U of M and The Liffey in St. Paul. Tomorrow night's Pint is at Gabe's - not a fan. There was no event in February. So, I need to make April's Pint, extraordinary. That's why I'm turning to all of you:-) Thanks so much.

Downtown HH - Suggestions please, RLM and others

RLM, I read your rec on restaurants and we seem to share similar tastes. However, the post I read was from 2009! As we all know, restaurants change. So, could you give me an updated list for Happy Hour offerings that I shouldn't miss in the DT area (16th St Mall). I will be in town visiting this week and often over the next few months. Also, if anyone else would like to chime in, I'd be very appreciative! Thanks:-)

THIS Saturday Night - Group Res - Foodie Restaurant

Thank you:-) I have a res for Cave Vin. I considered Butcher Block, as I have a Daily Deal GC but will go there another night. Glad to hear it's yummy! I look forward to checking it out.

THIS Saturday Night - Group Res - Foodie Restaurant

Anyone have a suggestion for a foodie restaurant that can accommodate a group of 8 for this Saturday night? I know, last-minute but that's my work for you. I tried Bachelor Farmer but HA! (Try May and only 6 people please. Res made:-) Or, if not a foodie restaurant, somewhere that could accommodate a larger group but still serve quality food (even "fancy" pizza, if an activity nearby could be combined to make a night out worthwhile) but at a more reasonable price ($12-25/pp). Thanks:-)

Dinkytown Recs

Looking for a step above burgers & fries near the Varsity Theater. I know the Loring Pasta Bar is close but not a lot of options for someone who cannot eat dairy. A wine bar would be nice but, I know, it's Dinkytown and the college crowd. Thanks:-)

Top 5 Restaurants for B'day Dinner

Ashii,

I've been to Sanctuary late one night. We had the place to ourselves. The waiter was wonderful, the food was divine, and I LOVED the atmosphere. It was dark and cozy, dare I say romantic? I'd like to try somewhere new but THAT is the exact type of place I am seeking for Saturday night's dinner.

Top 5 Restaurants for B'day Dinner

As much as I want to try Travail, I'm leaning towards a restaurant that allows for reservations for my b'day dinner. My week has been and will continue to be rather hectic, I haven't seen my sweetie in two weeks, and, come Saturday, I think I'm going to want a night "in". Of course, he wants to take me out somewhere special so who am I to complain? So, what would be your Top 5 choices? They must be restaurants that take reservations. I figure I'll give him the list and he can surprise me with his choice. Thanks:-)

Travail - Prepare us!

Reading more recent posts, I'm concerned that I'm going to go hungry since I am unable to eat dairy, except butter (Those tots sounds irresistible!) Perhaps, we should go elsewhere. So many other options, though. If you think we should, where?

Travail - Prepare us!

My sweetie has let the cat out of the bag. He's taking me to Travail for my b'day in a few weeks. It'll be a Saturday night so prepare us please:-) I know we'll be in for a long, LONG wait. Should we plan to arrive at 6pm or is later better? I understand we can bring our own wine. What is their corkage fee? We are planning to partake in their Tasting Menu. How crazy does that get, as I read about octopus. I'm not sure I could eat that. Are they able to handle food allergies? Is dessert included or do we pay for that separately? If it's separate, should we partake as I've read mixed reviews. Or, if we should partake, the sample platter or one option in particular (I cannot do dairy except butter.) Any and all tips are most appreciated:-) Thanks!

Holiday Party Ideas

So many of you have helped with suggestions and so I'll post another (vague) question. Use your imaginations, as I like "creative" ideas. I run the Twin Cities Social Club. Currently, we have 850+ members and I'd like to celebrate the holidays with a party. Now, my members do not like expensive gatherings or anything too "extravagant". Most of our events are attended by a dozen or so folks. Our Summer BBQ was shocking with over 75 people attending! I was impressed and we had a great time. Unfortunately, we are not able to use a park in December:-( Ideally, I'd like each guest to pay no more than $15/pp. A challenge, I know. So, what can we do and where can we go?

I think the event would be best attended on a Friday or Saturday evening, although I would be open to a Saturday afternoon. Food would be nice, as would a bar. Activities would be most welcome - something that gets folks to interact with one another.

I've thought about Dave & Buster's but we've tried to host an event there in the past and folks didn't sign up. Lazer Tag has been so-so attended. I did a curling event last year that was well-attended but I'd rather not be that active or cold. I've pondered ice skating at the Depot but, again, we did that as an event last year and not a lot of folks signed up. Bowling has always been well-attended but it's a "normal" event on our calendar. Roller skating? I don't know. Ideas people, please! I'd like somewhere that would be conducive to chatting so no loud music or if there is, another room in which to move for quieter conversation.

I know y'all know restaurants and I'm not opposed to that but, again, I'd like an activity. Perhaps, an activity nearby and then to the restaurant for cocktail hour? I don't know. YOU DO!!! Again, y'all have been so helpful in the past. Now's your chance to really shine:-) I want something creative (I am competing with other, similar groups.), cheap, and centrally-located. I don't think that's too much to ask or is it?

Again, MUCH, MUCH THANKS:-)

Gathering a few friends (around 20 or so) together for a b'day dinner on the East Side of St. Paul on a Saturday night in November. We'll be going to the MN Music Cafe for a concert later but would prefer elsewhere for dinner. Something a step above bar food but without breaking the bank (prefer btw $10/15 pp TOPS. Ice Cream Near Willow Creek - Not a Chain

Are there any "unique to MN" ice cream shops near Willow Creek 12 in Plymouth? I'm going to their screening of "The Goonies" and thought it'd be the perfect stop before the movie begins. Also, any restaurants nearby that you'd recommend? I'm not familiar with the area at all. Thanks!

Karykat,

You're AMAZING!!! Thank you, again, for recommending The Liffey.

The event coordinator and the manager I dealt with for The Liffey were outstanding! Usually, we try to negotiate a price break from 7-9pm. They were willing to offer us 6-8pm (extending their HH by one hour for us). Not a problem. I started our event one hour earlier than usual. Not a big deal at all!

I have yet to actually count the exact number of wristbands & name tags we used that night but I can tell you, for certain, that we had 100+ folks in attendance.

On our event's page, I had a lot of new folks sign up for this Pint. How exciting! I decided to use name tags (normally, we don't do this) in two different colors. Everyone who attended for their first time received one color and the "regulars" received another. As I was handing out the name tags throughout the evening, it became very clear we had MANY new people show up. That is wonderful news for our group, especially since they all seemed to have a great time and vowed to come again. We, also, managed to entice a few folks at The Liffey to join our group, too.

The specials ended at 8pm but the majority of our group didn't disperse until after 9pm. I was there until well after 10pm. And, yes, I was still drinking, along with others, and a few were even enjoying dinner at that late of an hour.

The head organizer of the Monthly Pint and I couldn't have been more pleased with this event. Honestly, it was PHENOMENAL and so much FUN!!! I do hope to return now that I've learned about their rooftop deck. That would be so wonderful, perhaps, in the fall. We don't like to go to the same place twice in a year but I think this may become an exception. I may even bring my own group, The Twin Cities Social Club, there this summer.

Oh, and I had my first "Big Ginger". YUM!!!

Again, my heartfelt thank you for mentioning this place. I would've never considered it, otherwise (I'm not a fan of hotel bars, especially on my days off, being that I'm a flight attendant.)

Thank you, KaryKat! The Liffey it is for March. The head organizer is THRILLED I was able to make it happen. Apparently, he's been trying for years to hold a Pint there. It took a few phone calls and emails, a wee bit of negotiation and we're in! Woo-hoo:-) Perhaps, you should join us. We'll be there on March 24th, a Thursday evening.

Super Bowl Sunday - Single Gal - Financial District or Nearby (walking/public transportation)

I'll be in town on Super Bowl Sunday and wondering where I can go to enjoy the game. I'm a diehard Packers fan! I'm a single gal and will be staying in the Financial District. I've been to San Fran numerous times before and have no problem taking public transportation if it's worth the effort. I enjoy the bar scene to an extent... Not a beer drinker but I do love my martinis! Reasonably-priced and yummy food is more important to me.

Thanks! :-)

True but I venture to the Lowertown location often and doubt their location could handle a group as large as ours. It's very rare that I am able to grab a table when I'm only with a few friends.

Believe it or not, I do take our size into consideration when I organize an event for this group. I don't want to overrun the bar from the locals, even if it is for just one night. At Grumpy's last week, there were a few folks mixed in with our group. They weren't quite sure what him 'em and it was fun to see their reactions when we all started showing up. lol

Thank you! Due to this discussion, I decided to go back into the archives of this group to investigate exactly where we've been before. I was sent a list by the Head Organizer but it was not accurate. Here is the list, from most recent all the way back to 2006. I now see we haven't been to The Lifffey so I'm going to contact them today. If that doesn't work, I'll talk to Kiernan's, as we haven't been there before, and The Local, as it's been a long time! Thank you all for your input. It is much, MUCH appreciated! Hopefully, this list will help you help me, too:-)

Well, we bring in the numbers and we spend a LOT of money! It's not unreasonable to ask a place to extend their happy hour prices for us. Most of the establishments have had no problems with doing this and that's why we frequent the places that we do. However, we were hoping to add a few to our list. Usually, our start time is during HH anyway, we just add an hour or so to it.

Also, I'm the organizer for the Twin Cities Social Club. We rarely pay FULL price for any event we attend. The businesses realize that we're a marketing tool and appreciate that. They, also, recognize when members come back, too.

Bill's Gun Range is a perfect example. They bent their own rules to accommodate our group on a Friday night (Normally, they don't allow reservations Fri-Sun.) They gave our group a discount on the lane rental fee. We brought our own arsenal of guns and ammo. We spent four hours there and had a great time! A few of our members went back the very next day because they had so much fun! And since them a few of the participating members have become regulars there. Bill's gets it. Most of the places I talk to, get it. The exceptions are VERY rare, thankfully.

Park Tavern's Beer List is not great but management is willing to work with us, they have the space, and our members enjoy themselves. This group is about beer AND socializing. Events at Park Tavern mix the two well together.

Karykat,

They do not list their beer menu online. I sent an email and should stop in one day soon. Is there list extensive? I've never been there.

As for the Blue Nile, much to my surprise we have been there! Huh. Guess that was before my time with the group. Anyway, they may have the space but they're not too eager about offering deals. That's the whole point. I mean, c'mon? On a Thursday night, you're going to turn down 150+ patrons because they want a few bucks off their beer and apps? WOW.

And, yes, 150 is a very accurate count. We were at Grumpy's in Roseville last night (Great venue for us but the service SUCKED!!! I waited well over an hour and a half for my chicken sandwich. The hostess took our orders first but didn't tell us she was a hostess and not allowed to do that. About 30-45 minutes later, our waitress came over to explain why we hadn't received our food, yet, then proceeded to take our orders again. Another 30-45 minutes later and they brought out our food. Of course, my order was wrong. Why must everything come with cheese? I am lactose-intolerant. I made sure to state NO CHEESE clearly and numerous times in a polite manner. Well, I had to wait another 15-minutes for my food. By then, my tots were cold and I was dealing with a throbbing headache. The kicker? No discount on our bill! Anyway...

I just don't think the venues that are able to fit our needs are taking us serious enough when we tell them 150 people. Last night, we had that EASILY. As much as these events are and as many new friends I make, I'm seriously reconsidering my role as an organizer. The challengers are really starting to add up!

Anyway, I do appreciate the suggestions here and I'm willing to hear more. I will check into the Liffey. Being that I live in Hudson, it'd be nice to have one that's near me. Also, being that it's March, I would like to be at an Irish bar. I know there's decent parking around there, too. I just need to make sure there isn't an event happening at the Excel.

Bayport BBQ - New Restaurant Review (Unable to post as such. Their locaion is the former Bayport Cookery and Chowhound hasn't been updated.)

Glad you enjoyed Bayport BBQ. It was sad to see the Bayport Cookery close, especially because I had always hoped to go there. I just never had a date:-( That chef was enticed back into the restaurant world and was at The Kitchen in Stillwater. That restaurant has now closed (I'm not surprised. I never heard very good reviews of the place and it was pricey.)

Now, Shanghai Bistro is moving in. The owner is from Eau Claire and owns one there, in Woodbury, in Hudson, and will, also, be opening one in Lowertown. WOW!

I've eaten at the Woodbury location and it was okay but not great. I've, also, been to the one in Hudson (Thanks to restaurant.com) and, again, good but not great. My friends rave about the sushi, though. I'm not a fan of sushi so I've never tried it. They did have a phenomenal lunch deal for $5.99 but that recently changed. It's now matching their other prices as "spendy". That's according to my 50-something old mom:-)
