Regional favorite that you just didn't get once you finally had a chance to try it

RAISING CANE'S in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

TASTELESS, SOGGY, BLAND, GREASY ALL AT THE SAME TIME. The Cane's Sauce everyone raves about is mayo, ketchup and black pepper. And it's EXPENSIVE!! For three chicken strips, soggy freezer fries, a greasy piece of toast, nasty/mushy cole slaw and a drink (sold separately) you're out $10.

Good Eats In Milwaukee?

H'm. That's a little harsh! Disappointing? Dreadful? SMH...

Most Overrated Dishes

A few months ago, I went to what is supposed to be the best brunch spot in Chicago. Can't remember what the name of the place is, but it's gaudily Grandma-decorated and a bit pricey. Everything is a la carte. I had challa French toast which was okay, but I can make better food at home, get better service, and deal with less pretension.

Most Overrated Dishes

After reading Tony B's brunch expose in Kitchen Confidential, I am fine with never going to a brunch again.

Most Overrated Dishes

White Castle is overrated!! Just smelling the outside of a WC makes me feel ill... So much grease!

Most Overrated Dishes

I have had the good stuff. It is not for me.

What is your favorite hard to find candy?

Necco Candy Raisins. They JUST stopped making 'em...

And I used to the love old black licorice pipes. Mmmm.

Most Overrated Dishes

Anything involving panko.
Anything involving eel/squid/octopus.
Smoothies.
Organic anything (maybe I'm a hick, but I can never taste much difference).

Israeli flat bread recipe?

Thank you for posting this.

Milwaukee Downtown

Maders "way too heavy"? Well what do you expect, it's German food, come on!!

Milwaukee Downtown

I believe La Perla has the pepper ride, never cared for that place much either. Too greasy!

Popeyes Fried Chicken - Change of Recipe?

I'm sorry, but I HIGHLY doubt the spiciness of anything in TO is comparable to anything in Louisiana. Most of the food I've had here has really lacked in flavor, even the Mexican food. The only place I've eaten that wasn't afraid to use spice is Gandhi, and they are notorious for the spice factor.

When you order spicy chicken at Popeye's in Louisiana you will need a jumbo sized sweet tea to wash it down even if you are a native.

Recipes You've Never Heard of Outside Your Family

My mom always are raw ground round on caraway rye with raw onion and a tiny bit of ketchup. Or instead of ground round, liverwurst. Yummmm.

Best and Worst Cooking Shows

I actually think Ina Garten is in line with middle American cooking. Fresh, simple, no-fuss.

Popeyes Fried Chicken - Change of Recipe?

Whoa. Where in my post did you read me say Popeye's in spicier here than in the US? You got that totally backwards.

Good Eats In Milwaukee?

It's not Tex-Mex, but different Mexican than you've ever had before. Cempazuchi uses 18th century Oaxacan recipes. Haven't been there for years, but I'm moving back to MKE this weekend and can hardly wait to go back to my favorite restaurant.

And you can't spend any amount of time in MKE without having some good German food. Some of the best places have closed (John Ernst, The Wurst Haus) but Mader's is still up and kickin'.

For something a little different, try one of my other favorites: Guinness and Irish fare at County Clare Inn (http://www.countyclare-inn.com). They are located at 1234 Astor Street. Their meatloaf and mashed potatoes are to die for.

Really Crappy Unhealthy Disgusting Toe-curling Junkfood!

I can't believe nobody has mentioned my #1 guilty pleasure:

WAFFLE HOUSE!!!

When I lived in Louisiana I was there multiple times a week. Their hashbrowns are to die for!! And their waffles, of course.

My other addictions, surprisingly nobody has mentioned these:
Flamin' Hot Cheetos, the crunchy kind
Twix bars
Potato chips with chocolate/Nutella
Kraft macaroni and cheese

Really Crappy Unhealthy Disgusting Toe-curling Junkfood!

Yes indeed!! My mom always made that for me as a kid. Soooo good!

Really Crappy Unhealthy Disgusting Toe-curling Junkfood!

Sorry, but that is entirely gross.

Popeyes Fried Chicken - Change of Recipe?

I did try Canadian Popeye's last week. The seasoning was close but still slightly mild compared to how it is back home. It was slightly over fried but just slightly.

The biscuit was TOO DRY!! Not enough butter. The Cajun rice ("dirty rice" as we call it) was also WAAAAYYY too dry and didn't have any gizzards... If you get the dirty rice down South it has lots of nice gizzards & livers.

best polish restaurant in GTA

This sounds delicious. I am Polish and have been dying to take my BF to a Polish restaurant.

Where is the best Mexican in Toronto?

Johnny Banana is neither authentic or delicious. Emphasis on the "not authentic"...

Where is the best Mexican in Toronto?

NOT AUTHENTIC!!! Not sure what your friend was smoking!! Nowhere in Mexico will they combine potatoes and chorizo, serve it on a flour tortilla and dare to call it a taco.

JB has some of the WORST, most flavorless "Mexican" ever. Honestly even Chipotle is better in both regards.

Pho

Pho Pasteur is my favorite, too. Yum yum!!

Popeyes Fried Chicken - Change of Recipe?

I am from Louisiana and Popeye's is a HUGE tradition in the New Orleans area. The recipe in NOLA has never changed. If you go to a Popeye's anywhere else, it is

- blander; in Louisiana it is almost unbearably spicy
- soggier
- not fresh

Even in Atlanta, Popeye's is different than it is in NOLA.

BUT... Popeye's is still my all-time fave. Haven't been to a TO location but I can tell you it is not going to be as spicy or crispy...

Cold Stone Creamery coming to Ontario

You're right, it was the Film Buff. There's also a cute little ice cream place on I think Dundas? Really wish I could remember where it is...

The Blubber Belt?

I really liked reading your post too. I also grew up with a single mom, in the 80s, though I GREW UP in Wisconsin and moved to Louisiana later. I believe we ate worse food in WI than ever in LA.

The Blubber Belt?

I disagree with your first point. I grew up in Wisconsin, which is typically lauded as THE fattest state. As I recall, Minnesota and Illinois aren't too far behind.

I believe this depends on your perception of the US as well as what sources you use. Growing up in the Midwest we were constantly bombarded with media stories saying how we were the fattest area of the US.

The Blubber Belt?

Maybe to you it looks like an abundance. To me, the fast food presence here is NOTHING compared to the US. Additionally, the high prices do make it less appealing than, say, a $4 felafel and drink.

The Blubber Belt?

Again, not only is your conception of the South totally wrong, this completely contradicts your response to my other post. *sigh*

If you mean Louisiana is "foodier" as in, some of the snobs you'll find on CH, absolutely not. The average SE Louisianan will be happy to eat grits with butter and black coffee for breakfast. Louisianians are not picky, nor will they turn their noses up at anything that is edible. (A great thing.)

On the other hand, they are familiar with lots of different types of food and now how to prepare your average vegetable hundreds of ways. They did not obtain this knowledge by watching FN or reading Gourmet; they learned it themselves and passed it down the generations.

Most Louisianan cuisine would be scoffed at by people on CH, which is sad.
