The Sandwich at Roma Deli

You can also tell him how many sandwiches you want meat for, and then buy the rolls and have sandwiches at home for a few days.

Manoushee - Santa Clarita = Excellent

Wanted to update my review, they have expanded the menu and have plates as well as wraps, for instance veggie plate with grape leaves, pilaf, hummus etc, chicken plate, schwarma plate. everything is still excellent!

And they have several vegetarian and vegan options.

I usually make this when chickens are on sale for really, really cheap. The supermarkets in my area have tons of different things like salt water solution, preservatives etc in the solutions they stick in it. Usually a very, very high amount of sodium. they are also usually very small and cost about $8 - 9 dollars.

By buying it on sale (usually 59 to 69 cents a pound), and making a larger one than the one we can eat the first night, I can then take the leftovers and make other items such as chicken salad sandwiches, I mix the chicken with barbecue or hot sauce and make tortilla roll ups, even something like stacking it between tortillas with cheese and enchilada sauce and making enchilada casserole.

I can then simmer the bones with some celery, onions, carrots and have broth for homemade soup.

You should probably leave the salt out just to make sure its not too salty. You can use whatever seasoning you want. If you can buy a decent already roasted chicken, more power to you!

I admire your efforts, good for you!

Have you tried this roast chicken recipe. I've used other seasons besides the mix she gives. Ive done Lemmon pepper, just seasoned salt, also slathered it with BBQ sauce. http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/10/crockpot-rotisserie-style-chicken.html

The Sandwich at Roma Deli

Here's the text
You are in line at Roma Deli, because that is where you go in Pasadena when you are in need of prosciutto, fresh mozzarella or pecorino di Sardo, and the woman in front of you has just ordered a sandwich. Maybe you have been to Roma a hundred times in your life, because the need for pecorino knows no season, and maybe, for some reason, you've never known about the sandwich. Whenever you stop by the deli counter, Rosario Mazzeo, who has been at Roma since the early 1950s (and whom everyone calls Ross), is too busy telling you about the smoked fresh mozzarella he just started bringing in, or trying to persuade you that the prosciutto from San Daniele is better than the prosciutto from Parma, or reaching under the counter to pull up a bottle of the olive oil his brother just sent him from Sicily.

"Only for salads; not for cooking," he says. "Do you hear me? Do you hear me?"

The meaning of the look in his eyes is unmistakable. His brother grew this oil. It is from trees Mazzeo loves. It is to be respected.

So we watch him make the sandwich with great interest. He cuts open an Italian roll, and he dribbles a few drops of olive oil on each surface. An assistant hands him in quick order hunks of provolone, mortadella, spiced coppa and salami. Mazzeo runs each through the slicer and smooths the meats onto the roll. He wraps it in butcher paper. The routine has taken about 30 seconds. "You're making carbonara tonight,'' Mazzeo says. "Get the guanciale. Better."

You mention that you have never noticed the sandwiches.

"Sandwich," says Mazzeo. "Only one kind. I make 120 of them a day -- sometimes 200. Do you want one? Best sandwich you ever had."

Mazzeo performs his ballet again, this time just for you. The roll is cottony soft, you notice, and the oil is one he once suggested when you told him you were frying artichokes. He applies neither vegetables, nor dressing, nor giardiniera; not even salt and pepper -- this is not a White House Special from the White House in Atlantic City or even a Godmother from Bay Cities in Santa Monica. You toss the wrapped sandwich into your basket and try to get the woman at the cash register to slip you a little extra basil from the impossibly fragrant stash she keeps behind the counter.

A while later, you remember the sandwich you have sitting on your kitchen counter, and you carve off a few inches for a snack. The undistinguished cold cuts have mingled into something pretty grand in the last few hours, a shimmering minor chord in the key of pork; the bitterness of the oil turns out to be all the sauce you need. The bread has maintained its thin, crisp crust, and the bland softness supports the richness of the meats in a way that an exquisitely crafted sourdough probably would not. It is, in its way, a perfect sandwich. It is the only one Mazzeo needs.

food trucks

The one time I tried Ludo it took FOREVER to get the food and they weren't that busy. Maybe it was a fluke.

Flatiron I like, Patty Wagon, Rebel Bite, Rosa Bella Cucina, Ragin Cajun. And they're food comes out quickly, there isn't a huge wait.

I like Mango Tango as well.

Dinner in or near Mission Hills?

Bear pit can get loud and the interior is really casual, so it might not be right for the poster.

Moon Pies

I think I've seen them at various Walmarts

Need "fun" food ideas

No kids, 7 adults no food restrictions, I know some people will not want to do anything but sit on their butts. I appreciate all suggestions.

Need "fun" food ideas

Trying to figure out what to do for food for Christmas, nobody seems interested in doing breakfast, which we did last year and frankly was a lot of work.

Someone suggested we do something "fun" but I'm not sure what the heck that means, and figured I'd ask for ideas. Fondue will not work, everyone is dead set against it.

If possible, I'd like ideas that can be mostly done in advance.

Thanks

The Sandwich at Roma Deli

I got fantastic oranges, avocados 2 weeks ago, and I've also gotten fantastic pineapples. I also got a bag of pistachios that are really tasty.

Five days business trip in Las Vegas... healthy eating essential!

There's a food court type area in Caesars Palace - Cypress Street Marketplace. They have a section that allows you to have the people working there create a salad with whatever you want. When I went there was a large variety of ingredients. There was also a wrap place that you could get a wrap made.

At Treasure Island, there is a deli that had good soup, the name of it escapes me though, and they had omlettes, etc and he could get an egg white omlette with different fillings.

Need Cookbook help

Thanks Everyone, I will investigate all of these suggestions.

Lookinng for Salt Pork

I've always been able to find it at Ralph's

Need Cookbook help

For Christmas I want to get someone a cookbook. I have a few parameters though. The person has been working out more and eating healthier, so the recipes need to be for the most part healthier.

She does not like to cook all that much so each recipe needs to be simple to make, and not a bunch of ingredients or complicated techniques.

Thanks in advance.

Kettle Corn/San Fernando Valley

I get kettle corn from Frontier Kettle Corn at the Santa Clarita Farmers Market on Sundays. Maybe they go to other farmers markets as well, so you could look for their banner.

Good eats in Santa Clarita......anybody?

Manoushee in Canyon Country has fantastic food. It only has a small seating area inside, maybe 3 tables. Everything is homemade and fantastic. http://www.manoushee.com/site/ Homemade hummus, pita bread, I've never had anything bad.

El Rinconcito (address is technically Valencia, but close to Castaic) I love their homemade soups and the chipotle burrito, and chile Relleno

Las Delicias in Castaic for tacos and pupusas.

Italia on Newhall Ranch road, I love their eggplant parm sub.

There should be some other threads on here if you do a search.

Cheap eats for foodies?

Burger bar would meat your budget if you shared sides and didn't go crazy with the toppings. The burgers there are fantastic. It's at mandalay bay shops.

ONE night in Vegas

We recently at at jaleo. And really liked it. It's a tapas restaurant with a party atmosphere, and everything we tried was delicious.

Jaleo or Todd English's Olives on Sat. night?

The concert is at Caesars, so you want to take that into consideration. We went on Sat night and it got over at 930.

Never been to Olives, but our meal at Jaleo was fantastic. The restaurant has a loud party atmosphere, so you may want to take that into consideration. Our server was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and we had great service. All the food we got was fantastic as well. This was the best experience we had last weekend.

Here is a map that will show you where everything is http://www.vegas.com/lounge/map.html

Otto Enoteca Pizzeria - Venetian Review

Ate there this past weekend, and I can't believe how bad the service was. The food was good, but the service was not.

We were seated towards the side near the back, and behind us were 2 other tables that the waitstaff had to keep squeezing by us to get back there. Annoying.

Our drinks were not kept filled, in fact, I think the waitress only asked once if we needed anything. Other than that, she would walk by us very quickly and just say Enjoy. At once point another table was madly and frantically waving their arms to get her attention, so she went over there to help them, and promptly disappeared before taking our dessert order. She was gone quite awhile. When she did come back, she took our order, but didn't write it down. Time goes by, she comes back and double checks my order, and said, Oh, I got it wrong then, I'll have to put it in again.

The restaurant was not that busy, and this type of service was inexcusable in my book. Especially at the prices you are paying. I know its Vegas, everything is overpriced, but for a casual restaurant some prices were high for what you got (mostly talking about dessert)

We ordered an appetizer of fried eggplant. The order was much bigger than I expected. The waitress asked if I wanted dipping sauce with it, so I said yes. Turns out that dipping sauce was an extra $2. Thats fine, but I hate when restaurants do that, I feel like I'm getting the wool pulled over my eyes. Eggplant and sauce were delicious.

We got a margherita pizza which was FABULOUS! Crust, sauce and cheese were perfect!

the 2 salads were good, and decently sized (we got 2 smalls instead of sharing a large one)

Dessert, we each got a trio of gelato. One combo was chocolate malt, espresso and graham cracker. Second set was huckleberry sorbet, concord grape sorbet and vanilla gelato. Each item tasted great, but the portions were skimpy for the accompanying price tag of $12 each set. I know they are using local ingredients etc. But when 2 desserts tally $24 they better be mind blowing and they weren't. The portions were very small for the price as well, it wouldn't have filled a custard cup.

I would go back for the pizza, that was totally worth it. I was just expecting better service.

A Treat to Bring Home?

Vosges Chocolate at Caesars palace. Amazing chocolates!

Finding Old Gourmet Magazines

Also tried used book stores, they sometimes have magazines, or if you libraries have any Friends of the Library bookstores, I've found old magazines there as well

ISO Sacremento Tomato Juice

ask the manager at your supermarket if they can get it. or, contact Sacramento and ask which stores in your area sell it http://www.redgold.com/sacramento/products.asp

Cherry Picking and other you pick Fruit..

Oh good. I never made it this year, and the cherries I've had to buy just aren't as good. I'll have to put apple picking on my calendar!

Looking for recs in Valencia

If you want to leave the boundaries of Valencia, in Canyon Country near Costco there is a great independent Middle eastern place. Fantastic Falafel, chicken plates, beef schwarma plates, lamajoun, cheese turnovers. Everything is made from Scratch. The owners name is Maral, and she is super nice. If you aren't familiar with this type of food, she will gladly describe what is in it and some cases offer you a sample. i'm addicted to their grape leaves, and now pretty much can't eat grape leaves from anywhere else.

There's some seating inside and outside, but not a ton, but its real casual. Also makes for great takeout, I get some hummus, homemade pita, baba ganoush, and use it to pack lunches for the week. Prices are so reasonable for what you get. http://www.manoushee.com/site/ The menu on their site may not include everything.

Don't know if you have Facebook, but they have a lot of pics of their food on it http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100001713252869

I also agree with Kitchen Queen, about Grill Kabob, although I like the hummus and pita better at manoushee.
