San Diego New Places Opening Thread Numero Tres.

Pita Jungle helped sustain me through grad school in Tempe. It's one of the three restaurants back in the Phoenix metro area that I miss, so I'm glad that it's here. Don't be fooled by the name... it isn't a Pita Pit-type place. Here's a link to their menu:

San Diego New Places Opening Thread Numero Tres.

Pita Jungle in Hillcrest is now open. (Thank goodness!)

pork enchiladas - green sauce or red sauce?

And my usual answer is "Both". Love sampling the sauces in NM. I was thinking that if I were the OP, I'd stew the pork in red sauce, but sauce the enchiladas themselves with green. Mmm...

Food Safety - Leftover Bones

This is what we do, too.

Shelter Island

To echo the other responses, Shelter Island isn't a place to go for upscale cuisine. It is one of the best places to eat lunch at a picnic table facing the harbor. Eating sandwiches from Point Loma Seafoods and watching ships enter/leave the harbor is a great way to spend a lunch hour.

What makes your twice baked potatoes extra fabulous?

Seeing this thread inspired me to make twice-baked potatoes tonight, which I hadn't done in years. Tonight's combination: bacon, spinach, shallots, and smoked gouda with sour cream to bind it together. We also coated the potatoes with olive oil and Penzey's seasoning salt while baking them. Mmm....

Suggestions for pizza topping combinations, please!

Our current favorite: Crumbled orgonzola and apple slices, sprinkled with spiced pecans and some shredded mozza/romano. We usually make this on puff pastry, but it should work on pizza dough as well.

I also have a fondness for spreading a thin layer of ranch dressing as a sauce, then topping with sliced tomatoes, red onions, grilled chicken, and shredded mozza/cheddar.

Pancakes near pacific beach help

South on Mission Blvd is a restaurant called The Mission, which has outstanding pancakes and french toast. (No waffles)

How to bake a chocolate cake for a diabetic?

I'll "fourth" this. My SO has been a Type 1 diabetic for almost three decades, and he never uses sugar substitutes. We use real sugar, and he watches his portion or gives himself a booster shot for a dessert. Type 2 diabetics might have other restrictions due to insulin resistance. Limiting total carbs is crucial for both types of diabetics.

To the OP: you are very kind!

Oops - just saw how old this post was!

San Diego New Places Opening Thread, Part Deux

I like the Culver City comparison. CC is a great example of a town that has been revitalized with a vibrant food/drinks scene. Of course, having Sony there helps. But it's good to see Malarkey invest in an area that isn't exactly the obvious choice.

How do you freeze your stock?

We do this as well. Works great for portioning out for different recipes.

Yummy, casual places like Urban Solace that are new to me?

We had a wonderful meal at Solace several weeks ago. Just like Urban Solace, the quality of food and service at that price point is great. Between the two of us, we enjoyed the crab brik (cake), pork belly, and the steak of the day (hangar). It was all well-prepared and very fresh.

Dish that got the best compliments today - share the recipe

I did the chipotle sweet potatoes for the first time at Thanksgiving last year, and we now make them frequently. So good! And that cranberry sauce sounds amazing.

Ideas for fruit dessert for Thanksgiving (not pie)

I've received a request to make an apple crisp for Thanksgiving. Any particular recipes that you would recommend? Thanks!

Dog Friendly Patio Restaurants in SD..

This is good to know. Thanks!

Craving me a slice of pie...

The Pannikin on Via de la Valle always has chocolate cream pie. It isn't my ideal, but works in a pinch.

Whats the concensus on Someburros?

When we lived near the Tempe location of Someburros, we often ordered red mixed burritos with cheese, chips, and guacamole supplemented with lots of the hot sauce. Perfect food? Nah. Satisfying comfort food? Yes. (No longer living in AZ, I miss having the "red" or "green" option that is so common in AZ and NM.)

"cookie of the day"

I made these bar cookies with marionberry jam yesterday. So good! Thanks for posting this recipe!

Your favorite recipes using Trader Joe's products

I do this all the time, often adding a little bit of the Sweet Chile Sauce for a slight kick.

San Diego CLOSED Restaurants - Replacement for old board.

On Yelp, the entry for the PB location says that the other locations are still open. I'm bummed about the PB closure, though.

Indonesian Lapis Legit Cake (aka Dutch Spekkoek)?

Fatcake (which is yeast-based) is not like spekkoek, which is a cake made of many, many layers, each baked separately with one added at a time. Sometimes it's called "Thousand Layer Cake". I keep asking my SO's mother for the family recipe, and she keeps turning me down, saying "Oh, it's so much effort that you'd never make it." Argh! Good spekkoek should be very spicy, more than sweet. Very dense and rich, so that a tiny sliver makes a good serving. (I think WandN might be thinking ollebollen, instead of spekkoek.)

One of these days, I'm really going to have to demand the family secret. Otherwise, we purchase some from Indonesian stores in Los Angeles when we visit. Good luck to the OP!

My, how could that taste so awful?

I thought I was the only one who reacted to the smell of Subway. When they first started baking their own bread it smelled fine. Now the smell activates my gag reflex. Really. Once a colleague brought lunch from Subway into the office, and I had to leave. What IS that smell?

_______ ruins my figure/diet/life

French fries
Hummus
M&Ms - plain or peanut
Chocolate chip cookies - fresh baked
Cadbury Mini Eggs

At least the hummus is nutritionally redeeming!

Foods you love at Trader Joe's that got discontinued? [OLD]

I thought we were the only folks who mourned the reduced sugar marionberry jam. That was awesome.

The Linkery - The Farm and the City

I would be very sad to see the sausages disappear. I always order the picnic plate or a flatbread featuring one of the sausages. Not that I'll stop going, of course, but still...

Finding comfort food in San Diego...

Seconded.

Burgers!!!

Not the last time I was there. They do wonderful lunch and dinner specials, though, and I think I've seen a patty melt as a special in the past. I still miss Four Peaks, now that I live in San Diego - nothing quite matches it!

Burgers!!!

Mushroom swiss burger at Four Peaks is very good, and their beer-battered fries are my favorite of anywhere.

Eating and Drinking like a tourist where you live...San Diego

We enjoyed our meals the other night - my SO had cioppino and I had a shrimp dish. We started with the lobster bisque and clam chowder. Having lived a handful of years in Los Angeles, I expected to pay much more of a location premium for food of lower quality. It was quite satisfactory.

Eating and Drinking like a tourist where you live...San Diego

Nice to know that the vacation vibe lingers on! One of our favorite things to do is to grab sandwiches at Point Loma Seafoods and go to Shelter Island and watch the ships go by. But since I've been lurking on Chowhound for the duration, we take *real* tourists to Super Cocina and Yakyudori and Cafe Chloe and save the beach for ourselves. :)
