Best Pizza in Austin?

I agree with the comment that nothing in Austin thus far compares with Dough in San Antonio for top quality pizza.

death & company?

that's the vibe I got from the website. helpful; thanks.
in that general genre, there's nothing I saw from the menu that persuaded me I wouldn't dine better at, say, Spotted Pig or Fedora.

Going Overboard at Marea (review)

thank you for the first-rate review, which I just now saw.
Dining solo, I had a less epic, but still spectacular, meal at Marea a few weeks back. Crudo tasting, Spaghetti/uni, dover sole . . . washed down with a sublime glass of grappa. Extraordinary restaurant, and grateful to be able to walk in on a Friday eve, belly up to the bar, and dine at the highest level.

Dinner tonight: Breslin, Momofuku, Back Forty...

I was at Ssam Bar last night (which was terrific, BTW) at 7 to 8:30 and the wait was minimal.

Buy my next bottle!

I would go in the reposado tequila direction. Great deal at that price point. I'm not familiar with the Muchote. Cazadores has a nice repo in the mid-20$ range.

Great Dinner at Uchiko

I agree 100% with this depiction.
Fried chicken is sublime. Big fan of the dishes described above as well.

Though not needing to compare with Uchi, will just note that Uchiko is somewhat quieter (bar area especially).

chile cheese fries

top-notch version at 24 Diner. Brisket plus the traditional CCF fixings.

Wash it down with one of the terrific micro-brews on offer.

Highly recommended.

daughter beginning college in San Antonio; need some go-to places for foodie parents

Went to the Pearl Brewery complex recently. Enjoyed LaGloria and also Andrew Weismann's seafood restaurant., Sandbar. Impressive complex; hope restaurants and shops can make a go of it in today's troubled economy.
Happily, just five minutes from college.

Looking forward to going to places on Santone's list.

Don't-miss restaurants for Chicago first-timers?

although I will greatly defer to locals on this sensitive subject, let me offer my two-cents advice:

Frontera Grill/Topo (Bayless lives up to the hype)

Blackbird

what's the best restaurant in San Diego open late (11:30pm)?

check this place out. Downtown, and thus close to the airport.

Tequila Infusions? (ISO cheap white tequila)

any thoughts about timing? I've generally read "36 hours" or thereabouts. But is there qualitative differences from shorter or longer infusions?

weekday lunch stop in or around SF (on the way from airport to Davis)

former longtime bay area restaurant, but interested in trying something newish (the last five years or so).

I know that doesn't narrow it down much, but I'm adventurseome and open to any kind of suggestions.

daughter beginning college in San Antonio; need some go-to places for foodie parents

just back from college move-in day in San Antonio. Quick food report:

Thursday dinner at Bin 555. While a bit more out of the way than I expected, it was worth the trip. Very nice menu, with variety of tapas-style plates. Reasonably priced, with diversity in meats, fish, veggies, in all, an excellent menu. A little disappointed in the relatively low level of server expertise -- made it hard to get recommendations. But our guessing did the trick nonetheless. I would definitely return. (The only somewhat strange aspect of the restaurant is that it is divided roughly in half between two rooms, one kept somewhat dark and other brightly lit. So, the basic experience will differ depending on where you are sat).

Friday dinner at Dough's, a pizzeria/italian restaurant. Terrific. Had the heads-on shrimp appetizer, a wonderful caprese salad, and a margharita pizza with oak roasted mushrooms. Food was excellent, service was first-rate with good advice (including, impressively, being steered away from daily wine special to something less expensive, but very good).

Saturday morning brunch at Taco Taco. San Antonio institution, from what I gather. I thought it was pretty good, but I would continue to search around for other, first-rate Tex Mex. I had the Barbacoa plate, which was served a tad cold, and a bowl of Menudo (pretty decent).

Looking forward to other San Antonio restaurant adventures, per the good suggestions above. Thanks.

Barbecue crawl in Austin/South Texas

as I just posted separately, do try Sam's BBQ (12th st. on the eastside) for the brisket & mutton.

Sam's BBQ meat lunch

brisket was sublime, really awesome

Mutton, ymm. Not an every day treat (cardiologically speaking), but boy oh boy.

Looking forward to trying Franklin's which is always sold out when we are able to meander by, so Sam's was our back up. But I have to give a shout out to what is amazing 'cue (east side, way down on 12th, around 2 thousand block I recall).

Anyone know of a pizzeria named Dough? Read some good things about it in TX Monthly.

Galaxy Cafe

used to like the place, but recent visits (at both locations, West Lynn and Triangle) leave me cold.

Menus are strangly incongrous, with at least four menus in categories (lunch, dinner, brunch, others, all on separate laminated sheets). Turns out the "greater includes the lesser" (as they say in the law biz), but you'd never know from menus.

Came at aprox 8 for dinner. At 8 on the dot the lights were turned way, way down, almost dark in the place. Asked about this and got a shrug and a "this is what we do." The 7 or 8 diners, already a bad omen, looked around with bafflement -- or at least I thought, insofar as I could make them out.

In sum, Galaxy Cafe seems to have fallen on some hard times. (Oh, by the way, they have taken the Turkey Chili off the menu). Other reactions?

I agree about Uchi & Wink, and also about positive review of Jeffrey's (which, as I understand it, has made a great comeback).

I would definitely skip Trio and Shoreline, however.
