Any casual, cheap Parisian-style couscous places in LA area?

They are breakfast and lunch only I believe so doubt that he's doing couscous until they start serving dinner.

Oh so bored...anything to excite my taste buds?

We all must have ordered wrong at Fig as no one was happy with their meal. Tavern has been my go to of late so Lukshon is a definite maybe...also considering Son of A Gun. Emme have any feedback on Villetta since you know the Brentwood Little Italy?

Need suggestions for a nice midweek business/social dinner preferably on the Westside, but will travel East too. Nothing stuffy, nothing to "sceney", don't want to have to sign to have a conversation and won't pay $38 for a plate of spaghetti so Scarpetta and Providence are unfortunately out, but will pay for great food and good service. Have done Ivy, Josie, Fig, Joe's, Hump, Little Door, Drago Centro with my guest previously.

No Pizza for LA Hound! Help!

Kathryn,

Looking at the Hotel Allegro. Walking distance would be nice, but cab distance is ok too! Have Red Onion (Bayliss) here in LA so probably won't go for Topo or Frontera. You might weigh in on danimalarkey's list below. Thanks.

No Pizza for LA Hound! Help!

Will be staying somewhere downtown... Loop or River North area. Not planning on a car until the weekend when heading out to suburbs to visit family. Looking for something more upscale than deli.

Will be in the Windy City for 2 nights in October. Want to experience some great Chicago food!
What are the do not miss restaurants? Something unique perhaps and definitely no formal stuffy dining spots. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Waterloo and City: Luscious First Night

We got a seat at the bar around 6:15. It was pretty packed when we left.
There is also a dining room and a few communal tables.
Great beer and wine selection. Had the pate/mousse which was delicious. Nice fresh baked bread basket brought promptly. Shared the caesar salad and a parpardelle with chicken meatballs and livers. Rich and very yummy. Available in 1/2 portion though the full sized is pretty small and enough for 1. Hot Choc Pudding with carmelized bananas was decadent and my husband might just get lucky for ordering it! Very friendly and efficient service. Be forewarned that the menu is a work in progress. It's a real bonus to our neighborhood and can't wait to go back. Great job for only 1 week out the gate.

Good Restaurant for Rehearsal Dinner?

We had a really great rehearsal dinner at Gladstone's. The food was surprisingly very good and the setting on the beach is romantic. They have a large private room in the back. Service was excellent. Can't speak to cost as we didn't pay, but I would think it's in your range.

Good steak near LAX

Completely concur with Servorg. Petrelli's steaks are mediocre. You get what you pay for here. Filling dinners at a good price. It's too bad because it could be a great old school steak house in our neighborhood with a total revamp of the place. Billingsley's & Buggy Whip are pretty much the same deal. If you want a good steak in this area, you can't beat Flemings.

Looking for Italian and Mexican restaurants in Santa Monica

You can't do better than Lares for mexican.
Lot of italian..depends on what you want to spend! Il Forno or La Vecchia are good moderately priced places.

Paul Martin's American Bistro in Manhattan Beach--Yay or Nay?

NAY!
I have to respectfully disagree with the other hounds. Doesn't even come close to Houston's which is consistently excellent service and delicious well prepared dishes. Dinner at 5:30 last night for a Valentine's celebration felt like dining at a Denny's. Despite having made a reservation on Open Table, they first try to seat us a table directly next to the bar eventhough the restaurant was virtually empty. We request the empty booth and are told it's reserved so we are then given a table near the entrance where you cannot place your feet under and it's rocking and has to be fixed. Very uncomfortable setting. The hostess in her very casual dress, i.e. jeans certainly didn't help to give a good first impression of anything special about the dining experience to come. They brought my hubbie's salad out before our appetizer came out. I had the fish which was well prepared, but the pancetta added was like shoe leather. My hubbie's prime rib was drowning in a plate of salty au jus and the horseradish sauce was watery and lacked any punch. Service was lacking and we had to ask the busboy several times for share plates. Won't be going back anytime soon.

LAX or Nearby?

For something a bit more upscale and relaxing, I'd suggest you try the new Paparazzi at the Sheraton right outside the airport on century. Italian in a nice setting. You can grab their shuttle. www.sheratonlax.com/Paparazzi

Dinela 2010...is it just me?

Not having yet participated in Dinela, is it just me or do the menus seem uninspired and devised to get the most bang for the buck?
I see a lot of Clam Chowder, Jidori Chx and Panna Cotta's on the menu. Any suggestions from previous years standouts appreciated.

Recs for Business Dinner that's not too staid!

Looking for recs for a business/social dinner with great food and good atmosphere....no loungy places where the scene is primary, food secondary. Considering Ceccioni's, Spago along those lines. Location between Century City and South Bay. Thanks.

Christmas Drinks?

Always enjoy a holiday drink at the Buffalo Club in Santa Monica. Small intimate bar with lights. The Peninsula with the fireplace or Four Seasons bars are festive too! Hotel Bel Air which is unfortunately closed I believe for renovations.

LA Chowhound needs a DC Power Lunch

We have 1 day for a great power lunch near the mall. Best food, service and atmosphere. Cost no object. Recommendations appreciated.

A Happy New Year at Akasha!

Had been hearing good things about Akasha for quite awhile, but it always looked dead when walking by. We decided to try it for the Rosh Hashanah menu they were offering to ring in the New Year and it was a winner. Nice warm casual decor in the restaurant and now offering happy hour in the adjacent lounge with a DJ. 1/2 off on bottles of wine on Weds. and no corkage on Sundays.

They have a very interesting cocktail list, but I opted for the Cava which was very light and dry.
Challah was brought to the table with some sliced apples sweetened with honey and pomegranate seeds.

We started with the liver pate "chopped liver" which had a soft but somewhat chunky texture and and the maroccan fish balls served in a light tomatoey sauce. They didn't have much of a fish taste and were more like a hush puppie. We ordered the potato pancakes which were so good, crispy and not greasy, served with sour cream and what I'm sure was homemade applesauce. I could have easily eaten another order and fortunately the brisket came with two more!
Mains were nothing fancy in the presentation, just superbly prepared traditional roast chicken served with a creative couscous with almonds, squash, chick peas, pomegranate seeds, stewed dried fruit and onions and a tasty, tender brisket of beef with potato pancakes and rapini. We passed on desert. Service was prompt. All in all a very delicious meal and we will go back to try some of the interesting veggie leaning entrees on the regular menu.

Scottsdale Trip Report Card-B+

Our Labor Day trip dining started off with great guac at RBar and then a miss at BLT Steak at the Camelback Inn. Great Fresh Watermelon Basil Margarita at the bar. Asked for a nice table on Opentable website as was a hotel guest and did not get seated in the main dining room but near the bar eventhough it wasn't that crowded. The pate amuse was served slightly warm which was unusual to say the least having eaten my share of pate living in France. The popovers were very good served with a salt shaker and butter. We ordered off the $50 blackboard menu. Fried Oysters, Asparagus wrapped in pancetta (salty), steak and scallops, spatzel and peas. The scallops were so salty they were inedible which just shows the lack of imagination in the kitchen. All in all a disappointing meal! Fortunately things improved from there.
Breakfast at Rita's was an excellent egg white Fritatta. We also had a light dinner one night with a yellow tomato gazpacho with apple that was yummy.
Sunday brunch at T. Cook's at the Royal Palms was also excellent. Be sure and reserve though.
High quality, good selection and affordable.
Happy Hour at Olive and Ivy for a quick bite on the way to the airport. Asparagus Mushroom flatbread was great.
Service at the Camelback was excellent.
