Role of Critics

Does anyone really even read newspaper critic write ups anymore? Unless it comes up on the front page of a Google search, I'd say no.

Three dinners in San Francisco.

Been to GD once a few years ago and still memorable because it was some of the best service I've ever had. People might suggest places with better food but the service plays such a big role in the entire experience and memories of the meal.

What NOT to buy at Costco's

Hands down it's the chia pods in the refrigerated section. Disgusting taste/texture. Another item are the Kirkland brand pistachios - they have a chemical/chlorine taste to them that was very off putting.

Memorable Quotes about booze

In St. Louis late one night I saw a local TV spot from a drive through liquor store with the tag line "If she doesn't look good, you haven't had enough to drink!" or "If you don't look , she hasn't had enough to drink!" It was one of those two, I forget exactly which variant but couldn't believe that aired.

What would you do to fix the Food Network

Their "Into The Fire" series I thought was very compelling, especially for an industry outsider like me with no insight into what goes into a restaurant. It's akin to that show NY Med.

Cherry Season 2014 - Prices seen in the SF Bay Area?

Cherries are still $6/lb at the local farmers markets. Costco had Lapin cherries from Oregon at $7.99 for a 2lb clamshell.

What reasonably healthy options have you found in the fast food chain world?

+1 to Trader Joe's Beet Salad...never liked beets until I tried this.

What reasonably healthy options have you found in the fast food chain world?

Subway turkey footlong, the Taco Bell Cantina Menu (Cantina Bowl, though it's been a while and I'm not sure if they still have it), and In N Out Hamburgers with mustard/ketchup instead of spread. My three go-tos.

Birthday Cake ideas wanted!

If there's a lot of smoked meats and rich sides I'd go with something fruity/bright on the palate. The orange chiffon with lemon curd filling sounds AMAZING! Or how about lemon cake with a blueberry filling?

What stores/chains would you drive long distances for?

I've never drove more than a few miles just for a chain place, and I'd like to say I never would, but if the nearby In N Out ever closed down I might need to make a 15 mile drive now and then for a burger.

TJ's Stilton Cheese with Apricot--NO MORE :( ???

I have a giant brick of Stilton with apricot that I got from Costco (Almaden/San Jose), but haven't opened it yet.

Best Sandwich at Subway?

My favorite has always been the meatball (with just added onions), and the cold cut combo (no jalapenos or banana peppers).

I once did see some guy order a "pizza sub" off menu, which is basically a meatball sub where they substitute pepperoni for the meatballs. I tried it once was just okay, not very filling either because it's just a thin layer of pepperoni.

Costco Food Finds - 2nd Quarter 2014

Costco Almaden(San Jose) has 10 bar boxes of Core Warrior Meal (Raw Banana Walnut) for i believe $28.99, which is a big savings from the $3.99/bar that Whole Foods sells them for.

Costco "KerryGold" Irish Butter

KerryGold is made from grass fed cows, so it's yellower and richer than other butter from grain fed. Good stuff.

Your disappointing purchases from Costco

Chia Pods. Avoid those like the black death.

UGH that sucks! Hopefully Costco will have cherries at a reasonable price...

Cherry Season 2014 - Prices seen in the SF Bay Area?

Local farmer's market has cherries at $5-6/lb, first saw them a couple of Sundays ago. Hopefully prices drop as more vendors bring them in.

Johnsonville Brats--what's the big deal?

Johnsonville to me seems like nothing more than marketing. For people that grew up eating them and identifying it as their bratwurst baseline, I can understand that (just like how Kraft mac and cheese is the best mac and cheese I've ever had or ever will have). I got into the bratwurst late so I didn't have any childhood memories to fall back on. Lots of other sausages I prefer over a Johnsonville brat.

What is the Most Garlicky Cuisine?

Korean is the winner to me. It's in almost everything, and, they often eat it raw, just dipping it in a sauce.

Yeast or cake donuts?

Yeast are always the best, nothing like the texture of biting into a fluffy yeast donut.

The only cake donuts I like are buttermilk bars, and that's only if I have a coffee drink along with the bar.

Best Fish Sauce

Ming Tsai harped endlessly on Three Crab fish sauce being the best on his old show East Meets West, so that's what I use and haven't bothered trying anything else.

Can ceramic knives be sharpened?

I got a Kyocera ceramic knife but had to toss it after I accidentally chipped it. They look pretty and make a nice conversation piece but I think steel knives are more practical.

New bread knife...OMG

I got the 7" F.Dick Offset Bread Knife after reading Kitchen Confidential and that thing slices better than any regular kitchen knife I've ever used.. Amazing with bread, but really shines with tomatoes.

Your disappointing purchases from Costco

Kirkland branded pistachios. They have a very weird chemical/chlorine/bleach aftertaste. I ate a handful from a bag and just tossed the rest.

Also I didn't buy it but they were sampling this weird refrigerated sprouted grain cup that had the texture of slime that was just god awful. Almost spit it out.

Searching for 7D Dried Mangoes

These things are CRAZY GOOD, my sister brought some back from Hawaii. I'm in the Bay Area and the only place I was able to find them was online, via Amazon.

Shark Tank promo

I've seen something like "Plated" before somewhere before but I can't recall exactly where it was. I remember it because I remember thinking about what a horrible waste of packaging material the concept was. I think the big market for something like this are the single guys looking to impress a girl with a home-cooked meal that isn't a "ate it during college" deal.

Is it true that SF restaurants barely make profits?

Though not always black and white, I definitely think there's a difference between a restaurant that's considered "touristy" vs "destination dining".

85 Degrees C (85C) Bakery Taiwanese chain coming to Bay Area (potentially Newark / Union City / Fremont)

I went to the "About Us" part of Marina Fresh, and under House Specialties one of the two items listed is "Snail Surprise! Flown in Daily from the murky waters of Taiwan!"

Beat Bobby Flay

I was hoping this was going to be more like Throwdown and be on location but after seeing it was on a stage and setup like Chopped I deleted my recording after 3 minutes.
