Searching for 7D Dried Mangoes

These things are CRAZY GOOD, my sister brought some back from Hawaii. I'm in the Bay Area and the only place I was able to find them was online, via Amazon.

Shark Tank promo

I've seen something like "Plated" before somewhere before but I can't recall exactly where it was. I remember it because I remember thinking about what a horrible waste of packaging material the concept was. I think the big market for something like this are the single guys looking to impress a girl with a home-cooked meal that isn't a "ate it during college" deal.

Is it true that SF restaurants barely make profits?

Though not always black and white, I definitely think there's a difference between a restaurant that's considered "touristy" vs "destination dining".

85 Degrees C (85C) Bakery Taiwanese chain coming to Bay Area (potentially Newark / Union City / Fremont)

I went to the "About Us" part of Marina Fresh, and under House Specialties one of the two items listed is "Snail Surprise! Flown in Daily from the murky waters of Taiwan!"

Beat Bobby Flay

I was hoping this was going to be more like Throwdown and be on location but after seeing it was on a stage and setup like Chopped I deleted my recording after 3 minutes.

The Archer Farms Brand at Target

When I ate bread I used to buy the Archer Farms bread for PBJ's...super soft and moist, was very surprised.

85C Bakery Cafe, Newark report w/ PICS

One thing about the sea salt iced coffee is to be sure to get it sealed and shake the bejeezus out of it before drinking so the salt/whipped cream gets mixed in with the coffee.

What DON'T you like in a sandwich?

Peperoncinis and green bell peppers - overpowers the sandwich.

Callard & Bowser Butterscotch - Anything come close?

Growing up my absolute favorite hard candy was the Callard & Bowser butterscotch rectanges. Deeply rich in flavor, dense, lasted a long time, too hard to get impatient and chew into. Are there any other butterscotch candies that come close? I think Werther's Originals might be the closest thing I've found, but I always just end up chewing those like toffee, and, they don't come anywhere close to the deep flavor of the Callard & Bowser.

Does Top Chef need a new host?

Padma seems to have no genuine passion for the show. Her delivery is very dry and robotic, and lacks warmth.

Someone with more charisma like Fabio Viviani would be a welcome replacement.

Convicted mobster hoping for a hit with NJ eatery

As long as he's served his time and there isn't a chance that the place will get pipe-bombed, if the food is good I'd be all for going there.

What would you do to fix the Food Network

I used to have Food Network on as my default "background noise" TV channel, but with all of the competition shows, no more. The only FN shows I've bothered watching in the past 5 years are DDD and some of the ICAs.

2014 SF Bay Area Michelin Stars

I'm always surpised, yet not surprised, that San Jose the 10th largest city in the country doesn't have a restaurant listed. For a city with a large population of people with disposable income that frequent SF, it's kind of sad it doesn't attract high caliber restaurants.

I went to Paris Baguette once and tried a bunch of items and came away very unimpressed. Nothing I bought made me want to go back, and I haven't.

The Refuge in San Carlos: REAL Pastrami and more!

I just heard about this place after seeing it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives over the weekend. The pastrami looks amazing, can't wait to give it a try!

PB and Mayo might be the winner here for me too, of stuff I won't try. Fluffernutters are amazing, but this is no fluffernutter.

Pan-fried Spam is tasty with the crispy brown edges, albeit heavy on the salt so you need something to neutralize it (white rice works well). I grew up eating fried spam, white rice, and kimchee, it works well together.

Calamari has a pretty neutral smell/taste. Dried squid is a whole different beast. It's like eating a nice steamed white fish vs eating bonito flakes.

Have you met a "celebrity chef?" Were you pleased or disappointed?

She just sounds like an introvert, who don't always show the warm initial social interaction with strangers that extroverts do.

Getting braces tomorrow trying to plan ahead of time. What foods can I have and not have?

Bean/rice/cheese burritos with tons of salsa.

I had a friend who got jaw surgery for an underbite in college, one time he put a whopper in a blender.

Dried squid, the kind you find in Korean supermarkets where the ingredient is just wild caught squid. Squid jerky, yum!

If you ever had cherrystone clams please, let me know if this is how it is when you eat them.

Steamed clams are second only to steamed dungeness crabs to me on my list of favorite seafoods. However while I love raw oysters, I can't for the life of me stomach a raw clam. Like mucho gordo said the rubbery/gelatinous texture of clams when raw just kills it for me. And the liquor in a steamed clam to me is one of the great bursts of sweet and salty oceany goodness, but raw clams just doesn't have that.

Best No Reservations Episode?

Was the Boston one where it had that noir feeling to it and he talked about The Friends Of Eddie Coyle? If it is, yeah, that wasn't a good episode.

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - August 2013 [old]

Their Mesquite Smoked Almonds are laced with crack or something. If you like the blue can smokehouse almonds at Costco, these are much better.

Also I'll bring it up once again that their Belgian Butter Waffle Cookies are amazing. Great with ice cream or just plain out of the box. Probably my favorite item ever from Trader Joe's.
