Classier Chinese Restaurant for a Post Wedding Ceremony Meal
i ate chinese food at this location 3 years ago, and the place was dying. No chance I would go back. I forget the name (it was different than Michaels). So this may be a reboot, but I haven't been myself.
Based on the reviews they put on their own website, they seem to be a bit confused, saying that they serve "Taiwanese, Szechuan, and dim sum". Probably a red flag here...
Classier Chinese Restaurant for a Post Wedding Ceremony Meal
seven seas has a couple 'private' rooms where 9 people would fit easily and separate you from the less dressed up. their food is acceptable with plenty of non-spicy dishes. they do have banquet style menus if desired.
seems like it fits your requirements
Hill Country BBQ coming to DC
yeah, unfortunately, the brisket doesn't hold a candle to Goode BBQ or thereabouts, I could go for one of their brisket sandwiches right about now.
Hill Country BBQ coming to DC
ate dinner here friday. place reminded me of a clean tx bbq (like rudy's) - clean is not necessarily bad nor good! surprising to finally get edible bbq in dc, so its definitely welcome. for someone who's lived in the south and gets frequent bbq cravings (and usually failed to satisfy these cravings), i was happy to see it open.
we had:
moist brisket: bit too fatty for my taste, also mean wasn't smokey throughout.
beef ribs: not fall off the bone which made it slightly difficult to eat / smaller than expected
prime rib: i don't know if i'd go to a bbq to get prime rib.
pork ribs: tasty, meaty and juicy. still not a great amount of smoke, but decent.
and several fixins that were decent, but no must-haves.
hopefully their smokers will gain 'seasoning' the longer they're around. In any case, its worth checking out (45 minute wait on a friday), so seems like may have discovered it already. There were empty tables, so they're probably just gauging waitstaff / traffic which may ultimately help out the wait times (but bring in more people!)
i'd go back!
Sushi Taro recs
apologies for digging up an old post...
i went to sushi taro for the first time in a few months (last time was during the summer), and i'm a bit alarmed. the food/service was not up to its usual standards. Has something happened recently?
First of all, I was easily able to get a reservation Friday night, which I thought was a bit odd - but grateful nonetheless.
I don't go there enough for them to recognize me, and I was expecting the waitress to give the usual spiel about kaiseki/omakase etc..., but she left us alone with our menus. At one point we wanted to order - past times I've gone there, they've insisted on taking our order, not tallying it ourselves on the piece of paper, so this was the second signal that something was different. Don't get me wrong, I happily went through and ordered individual nigiri. There were rolls on the paper, but we had to write in the sashimi and the special Japansese sushi on the side margins. Have they reversed their tact in terms of trying to be uber sophisticated (back to pre-renovation)?
To the food, the fish did not appear to be as fresh as it usually is. In the selection of nigiri, the mackerel and snapper were lacking the usual freshness and crispiness. The wagyu beef was also sloppily cut and lacked the smoky flavor. Ok, even the tamago (egg omelette) was sloppily branded. my past experiences have been memorable and special. The fish/beef here was disappointing.
As for the service, we didn't get our water or tea refilled until we ran out of both. Not the last straw, but i was getting thirsty.
Lastly, i noticed that they were running specials during the week. Are they struggling? This isn't something I've thought they had to do to drum up business...
I'm certainly a sushi taro loyalist, i still think its the best place in the area, but this visit disappointed me. Its not the last time I will go here, but I have higher expectations than what I experienced. I still recommend this place and would rather not start a flame war, but was wondering if others had similar experiences recently.
dessert in dupont circle?
preferably a place open until after 10. Tabard Inn's dining room closes at 10, i think I walked past Dolcezza last week - place looks yummy (more inviting than the Bethesda one), but looks like it closes at 9.
perhaps we'll go over to Coco Sala
dessert in dupont circle?
Kramerbooks is good, i do like it. Perhaps I'm looking for a place thats less cafe-ish with a warmer/cozier atmosphere. Or just another dessert option when in the area.
dessert in dupont circle?
hello,
looking for a place that's open late for dessert in the dupont circle area for the weekend. Its sad that all I can think of is Kramerbooks and Krispy Kreme....
thanks!
San jose, mobile to the sf area looking for...
thanks for the link to "the big list"
i went to Tomi for lunch today and had the "special nigiri " I was drooling over them preparing several chirashi lunch boxes in front of me.
I'd agree with the review on the big list. Its a solid option, nothing extravagant, but decent (and reasonable) enough to make regular visits.
incidentally, i went to sushi sam's and was really disappointed. i had the soft shell crab roll (probably the spider roll or what not) and it was soggy and we ended up sending it back. people recommend this place, so it was probably just a bad bunch of crab.
i am very glad to be done with San Jose. I did go to Scotts, Los Gatos Brewing Co. and Los Cubanos. Edible, but nothing memorable.
thanks for the recs. onward up to SF. Any decent spots for west coast oysters?
San jose, mobile to the sf area looking for...
Here for the week, will have several meals free after meetings. I'm looking for good west coast oysters, good (but approachable) sushi, and interesting "street food" suggestions. Meeting is until wed near san jose conv center. Able to travel elsewhere (have car) later in the week. Will be dining solo, and traveling from the east coast (dc) if that matters. Thanks in advance!
pho between dc and bmore
looking for an edible Pho option along I-95 between beltways. Any suggestions?
thanks
looking for suggestions in Santa Monica
just to recap my trip: unfortunately, did not get to visit as many of the wonderful suggestions that you provided. with coworkers less adventurous, i was limited to the area surrounding the Fairmont.
happily though, I did get to go to Blue plate oysterette twice. I was able to enjoy some nice west coast oysters. wish i could have gone back for a few more komo gway and lunas. for lunch, i also had the ahi sandwich, which was very refreshing after a long cross-country flight. Fig (in the hotel) was a wonderful setting for drinks - unfortunately didn't eat there.
unfortunately, i went to a couple touristy/sceney restaurants, which was disappointing for meals lost! i assume the response on this board will be DUH!, but I will admit that I went to both Boa steakhouse and Sushi Roku. The concierge at the hotel recommended these, which probably should have been my first red flag. With coworkers, I acquiesced... I was disappointed in even the rice with the nigiri- it fell apart. Boa was hilarious.
Anyways, it was ridiculously hot on the east coast while i was in LA, so I can't complain with beautiful weather. will have to revisit with this list again.

Adventerous, affordable, celebratory dinner in D.C. (Palena? Corduroy? Or...?)
- Corduroy = Jackets preferred
- Palena is close to your hotel (Up one metro stop/short cab ride to Cleveland park)
- Tabard Inn is in Dupont (there's many suggestions on this board for Dupont Circle)
- If you want drinks afterward, there will be more options in Dupont than Cleveland park
- go enjoy the other places on your own as they're outside the 15-20 minute popularity zone.

Persian in DC
Any recommendations for persian food in DC? (a restaurant, not moby dick).
Silver Spring non-meat options
i hope this isn't ignorant, but seafood at Crisfield's would constitute "not red meat nor poultry" and be a decent downtown SS option.

thanks for all the suggestions. i'll have to wade through all of them and propose a plan of attack. Blue Plate Oysterette and Anisette look to be right up my alley. Fig will happen since I'll be there. Father's Office looks good for drinks. I'll save the deli for NYC. I was amused by the mexican discussion/disagreement. Is Musha a decent sushi option? Are there others nearby?
Are there any recs for late-night eating?

thanks for the recs. I'm definitely interested in the local food and don't really need the scene. However, these views you talk about have piqued my interest!
looking for suggestions in Santa Monica
Hello,
Wondering if anyone can provide any suggestions (or links) to good food in walking distance from the Fairmont Hotel. Traveling from DC in june.
Thanks in advance!
Againn. How is it?
i'd recommend againn. been there a couple times for dinner. in addition to the potted pork, we had pig head and pork pate on the charcuterie board. the waitress said that they butcher the entire pig on site. thats points in my book!
in terms of meat, i haven't had the steaks, but i can speak very well of the pork belly and lamb (which i can't find on the online menu now). *one thing to note is that the menu seems to be changing, either for variety or them just figuring out what sticks.
on the side, i'd have to recommend the shepherds pie and chicken pot pie. also can't go wrong with the brussel sprouts and bacon!
we also had the oysters / mussels, but in my opinion the land-based dishes are done better here.
they have a decent selection of drinks. and you can rent your own scotch locker!
i was tepid the first time i went, but the opinion is moving upwards now...
Soul Food
i think its Montgomergy county - try the General Store's comfort dishes (fried chicken greens, etc...). They're tasty.
Butternut squash/pumpkin ravioli?
i saw pumpkin ravioli on the menu at marvin. ended up getting goat cheese croquettes and scallops instead, but i'd imagine that it would be tasty here.
Common Wealth
Enjoyed dinner at Common Wealth gastropub in Columbia Heights. Before getting seated, we enjoyed a couple beers at the bar- decent selection of english drafts. we had the scotch egg and black pudding. The pudding was as advertised - crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. The egg was a bit over cooked, but very good nonetheless. For mains, we had duck risotto (flavorful, but the risotto could have been a bit more defined), shepherds pie (chopped up stewed beef underneath was tasty). For dessert, the surprise was earl grey infused semi fredo. they also gave us a complimentary raspberry souffle which had a perfect balance of chocolate and raspberry flavor. if you're in the area, its a definite spot to consider, if only for drinks.

Non-tourist eats
my interpretation of a dc tourist trap is one where you see people in those silly CIA or FBI hats or sweat shirts.
Perhaps another interpretation of a dc tourist trap is the places that have been visited by the Obamas (i.e. Bens Chili bowl, Rays HB, Marvin's). Geez, there's an article on CNN right now about where the DC people eat ("The DC power lunch: Where Washington's elite go to eat").
