Suggestions for Restaurant to Host a Party......

Thanks for the heads up. I will check into these suggestions....

Suggestions for Restaurant to Host a Party......

I think I am seeing that with the price....though I am still holding out hope. Have contacted Phillippe & Gravitas...just waiting to hear back. I am iffy about Canopy, as I have never been overly impressed with Shade. Have never eaten at Canopy however. With the caterer you suggest, I would still need to rent a place to have the party. Do you think the location rental and the caterer would both be in my budget?

Suggestions for Restaurant to Host a Party......

Hello gang....I was hoping you guys could offer some good suggestions as to where I could host a nice party next January to celebrate a small family event. As things stand right now, the following details apply:

1) must have a private spot for approximately 40 people;
2) must be inside the Loop...proximity to the Heights is an added bonus;
3) was thinking of doing more of a heavy hors d'oeuvres menu versus a sit down dinner, so a place with tasty & innovative small plates could be good;
4) cost is a consideration....hoping to keep the entire event under $2000 inclusive of alcohol. Would prefer to keep it under $1500 if possible, but that may be asking too much :(
5) ability to bring in our own wine would be nice

That's about all I can think of at the moment....look forward to hearing your ideas

Reef - what should I know about it

Thanks for everyone''s input...I'll let you know how our visit was in a couple of weeks.

Reef - what should I know about it

Thanks...and I know what you mean about being underwhelmed at times in restaurants. Generally, if I can make the dish, then I'm a little disappointed to be eating it there. I'm not really a fish person, but my gf is very interested in trying the place...so we are going barring a bad health dept inspection :)

Reef - what should I know about it

Hey guys....thinking of taking my gf to Reef for her birthday, but I've heard some mixed reviews about it (I always expect some dissent about these things, but am hearing more than I think I should about a F&W Best New Chef).

1) Is this a great spot for a celebration dinner?
2) If so, does anyone have any "insider's tips" about dining there?
3) Any must-try's on the menu?

I'd appreciate any help you guys can offer. Thanks!

Need help for a quick NO weekend May 15th

This is good to know...just called them and they only have some late reservations for Friday. Was hoping to hit the Davenport Lounge at 9 that night and all of their reservations are for later than that.....I recently bought Spicer's cookbook - have you guys tried any of the recipes?

I have been thinking about Bayona....but have seen mixed reviews on the boards. If it has become a hit-or-miss kind of place, my luck would make it a "miss" night. would love to try that Duck PBJ tho!

Need help for a quick NO weekend May 15th

Thanks to all for the recommendations....we will be arriving in Nola earlier than I had orginally thought, so I'm going to try to get in a late lunch at Mr' B's on Friday. I have also made reservations for Coquette on Sunday before we leave. Looking forward to both places!

Was thinking K-Paul's for Friday dinner but they are booked. Emeril's only has availability at 9pm (kinda late for me). Anything along these lines in the Quarter you would send someone to? What about Olivier's?

Need help for a quick NO weekend May 15th

Thanks Piglet.....I'm looking forward to both Napoleon House and Coop's on Friday night! Just tried to book a reservation at Emeril's for Sunday lunch and they told me they don't offer lunch service on the weekends - is this true Littleman?

You are right about how casually sweaty we may be apres zoo....that kinda sucks really, but what's a guy to do? What's best to order at Frankie and Johnny's?

Anyone have a suggestion for a last meal before we leave NO on Sunday? It looks like we may be struggling a bit with this meal.....

Need help for a quick NO weekend May 15th

Correct...I hope to be at the zoo when it opens....around 10 or 10:30am I think

Need help for a quick NO weekend May 15th

Thanks Littleman - I'll give Emeril's a call tonight.

How casual are some of thoise lunch spots in Uptown? I'm sure I'll be wearing shorts and smelling faintly of zoo at that time :) Is there anything along magazine that you would suggest?

Need help for a quick NO weekend May 15th

Just checked Emeril's website & they do not appear to be open on Sundays....maybe on my next trip. Is there another good lunch choice for Sunday?

Need help for a quick NO weekend May 15th

Thanks for the tips Littleman...I've never heard of Copper Monkey Grill, so I'll need to do some research :) Napolean House seems like a favorite on the boards, so I at least want to stop in for a drink - of the 3 you named for Friday night, which serves the better food?

Emeril's sounds like a great idea. Have always wanted to try his restaurants, but somehow never found the opportunity

Any Uptown suggestions? I have tried Brightsen's many years ago, but little else in that area.

Hey guys....would love to get your opinions on how to eat & drink as much New Orleans goodness as possible this coming weekend. My gf and I are driving into town sometime Friday night (ETA is not determinable at this time, but I am definitely getting a beer or three someplace before bedtime) from Houston for a friend's wedding on Saturday. That means a Saturday dinner is out of the question :(

Assuming we get in early enough on Friday (staying at a hotel in the FQ FYI), what is a good place to get some food and drinks in a lively atmosphere? Red beans and rice, poboys, oysters...pretty casual, good food that goes nice with a cold beer.

On Saturday, we are going to the zoo....why you ask? Because the gf wants to see the zoo. That's the only reason I can offer you. I want to hit it pretty early so I can squeeze in a breakfast and lunch prior to heading to Gretna for the wedding at 6:30. We will eat at Cafe du Monde at some point this weekend, so I was thinking about some other place - either in the FQ or something Uptown closer to the zoo.

Not sure how long the zoo tour will last, but surely I can find a great lunch in the area before heading back to the hotel to get dressed for the wedding that night. This will be my one chance this trip for a splurge, so money isn't necessarily an issue - but if I don't have to spend a small fortune, so much the better!

Lastly, a nice Sunday brunch/lunch before we leave town on Sunday. I haven't done Commanders, but not really feeling it right now - maybe someplace new???

It's a quick trip and I would dearly love to stay longer. Any help you can offer to make this a great weekend will be appreciated.

Christmas Tamales in Houston

The best ones I've had yet are sold by the dozen every weekend at Gerardo's on Patton. They offer both pork and beef (i think). They also have excellent pico and various sauces to try them with. Very inexpensive to boot....highly recommend them & the barbacoa and lingua!

Looking for a Great Lunch Spot in Georgia (Atlanta area)

Thanks guys...I'm booking a reservation at Watershed and looking forward to it. I have 2 small children (ages 14 months and 8 months - does anyone think this would not be the place for them?

Looking for a Great Lunch Spot in Georgia (Atlanta area)

Will be visiting for Christmas and taking the folks out for lunch one day....choosing from restaurants in midtown Atlanta, Virginia Highlands or Decatur. Looking for good Southern food (or any place very good but not exotic) in a nice atmosphere.... price point of about $30-40 per person not including tax and tip. Thanks

First-Timer...Looking for a Critique of my Meal Choices

Degustation says they will be closed on New Year's Day due to inability to get fresh fish and produce.....have now booked Cafe Boulud instead. Will also try the lunch special at JG. Scarpetta is still my final Saturday night meal....looking forward to them all!

First-Timer...Looking for a Critique of my Meal Choices

BTW....thank you guys for all the input....this is helping tremendously

First-Timer...Looking for a Critique of my Meal Choices

Lord knows I need to drop a few pounds, but I am not that big of an eater anymore.....Degustation is sounding better to me as a dinner option. How long would the 10 course tasting take....2 hours plus? Do they only take reservations by phone? I don't see them on OpenTable.

First-Timer...Looking for a Critique of my Meal Choices

My wallet just did a double-take at that Kathryn! :)

Honest opinion.......do you think it's worth the extra cash to do the tasting menu as opposed to his prix fixe? Or would I get as much enjoyment from the Degustation tasting?

I hate to have this be about the money, but I would want to be WOW'd for that sum of cash.....will I be WOW'd? :)

First-Timer...Looking for a Critique of my Meal Choices

rrems.....how much is the dinner tasting menu at JG? I will probably not do any wine pairings, but will have a bottle with the whole progression (not the ultimate experience, but I do have bills to pay once the trip is over!).

First-Timer...Looking for a Critique of my Meal Choices

For dinner prices.....I'm thinking no more than $200 before tax and tip - $150 is better, but willing to go higher. Lunches, of course, will have to be less.

I am definitely doing pizza while in NY....our friends are taking us to Brooklyn for pizza, so that should cover it.

While in Manhattan, we will be staying near Grand Central terminal....but we will be doing some shopping and site-seeing, so we expect to be all over the city.

Any ideas what our friends and us could do on NYE? We will need a place to eat and drink a few.....a nice neighborhoody gastro-pub type of place out of the way of the NYE crowd?????

First-Timer...Looking for a Critique of my Meal Choices

Hi guys....I've posted before (a big rambling one with little info for you to work with), but now I think I am very, very close to nailing down my eating plan! Still need your help though as I am a little nervous about screwing something up.

My gf and I are coming in for New Years and spending a couple of days with friends and a couple to ourselves. My only job is to pick out our food (except for cupcakes...she loves cupcakes and has her places to visit for that).

We are looking for a food experience.....we are not exactly foodies. More like wanna-be foodies, and this is our chance to experience the best of the best - within our budget anyway. One thing we definitely want to try is a tasting menu. Another is street food.

So far....I have booked a reservation at Scarpetta for our final night in town (Saturday Jan 2nd). Babbo was my first choice, but after 45 minutes on the phone, I gave up. I am perfectly fine with Scarpetta as my first alternate though - unless there is some strong dissent from you guys. For Friday's dinner, I'm torn.....I have a reservation at Nougatine (seemed to have a nice $68 prix fixe), but am wondering if I should just bite the budget bullet and upgrade to Jean Georges....it could be years before I return to NYC after all! Another thought was Degustation. Leaning towards something more French however.

For lunches....had thought about Shake Shack on the UWS....possibly Momfuku Noodle Bar....and the street food angle. Trying to keep the lunches very reasonable and splurge more on dinners.

Looking for some place to eat on New Year's Eve lunch without messing with large crowds and wait staff angry at working on the Eve.....at a total loss here.

Thanks for any help and guidance you can give!

Looking for suggestions for Sunnyside

It's ok...I wasn't looking for Mexican recs, but I can always eat Mexican (well, Tex-Mex anyway). do you know if the Thai place is open on Wednesdays - I thought I saw a post that said it wasn't?

Looking for suggestions for Sunnyside

Whoa!!! forgot I had posted this during the holidays - turkey-induced coma I guess....just posted again today. Thanks for all the suggestions. Looking forward to my visit!

Sunnyside Lunch

Thanks janie...I had read about De Mole and I'm interested in seeing what it's all about...especially that hot chocolate on a cold winter day! I have never tried Turkish - what would be good to order at Mangal? Is the Thai place still closed on Wednesdays? I think I read that in a very old post. Not being a tofu guy, would there be anything more "meaty" at Natural Tofu?

Sunnyside Lunch

Also....forgot to ask about a good breakfast place in the neighborhood. My gf is big on pancakes and waffles if that helps any!

Sunnyside Lunch

Hey guys....staying with a friend in Sunnyside on 12/30. Arriving in town that day and will be starved for a great lunch. Any recommendations for that area of Queens? Have pizza plans for later, so not that......from Houston, so not really looking for Mexican either - but I can be convinced to try your best Mexican. Thanks!
