iso of fresh soft myzithra

Hi - I was wondering if this greek cheese was available anywhere in Montreal - it's similar to ricotta or mascarpone (although I don't think they are all that similar to each other anyway, just suggested as alternatives).

Thanks

Roi du Plateau's smoke bothers the neighbors

just a comment on the people should know about it before they move in to the neighbourhood... I live a few blocks away, it doesn't bother us, however there is a HUGE difference with the amount of smoke in the summer as opposed to the winter. I would never have thought about it if I was looking at condos in the winter - ok now I would but I wouldn't have before I moved into the neighbourhood. We moved in March and I can remember being shocked at how smokey it was in the summer in the area around the paris loft condos.... and thinking good job I didn't buy around there.

iso canned/jarred sour cherries

so I also went to the Russian store on Somerled (had to go next door for a kids party) and the sour cherries were $3.50 whereas at fruiterie mile end I paid $6 :(

iso canned/jarred sour cherries

Thanks!! I was all set to go to one of those places and I ended up finding them in Fruiterie Mile End (in case anyone else is looking)

standing rib roast

I just ordered one from la maison du roti... don't know how good it will be, but I love the rest of their meat. It'll be $80 for 9 people.

iso canned/jarred sour cherries

Hi I'm looking for some place that sells bottled sour cherries, doesn't matter the brand but the recipe suggest Morello....

Thanks

Cake decorations and supplies

Dinner for 60 in Montreal in Spetember

some choices here

Looking for a venue for small wedding ceremony/reception :: 60 people

Sorry I took so long to reply, haven't been on much.
ok - hope its not too late
$71/head = 10 canapes/person, 3 stations, plus a cake and selection of macarons and little verrines (tiramisu, fruit etc.) later in the night
$42/head = four hours of open bar (I wanted grey goose vodka so this was a hybrid between basic and premium bar) each additional hour is $10/head.
Wine is extra, but they have some very good wines for their prices, so about $30/bottle and $38 for mousseux.
Service added on top at 15% but no rental fees or anything else

Looking for a venue for small wedding ceremony/reception :: 60 people

does your $80 include alcohol??

I am getting married July 9th and having about 70 people. I am however having the ceremony at a church. I wanted a cocktail dinatoire reception - full meal, but not a sit down service. More of a happy hour party type feel. However every place I looked at could accomadate both types.

I looked at the following places (with my opinion)

Daylight Factory: this was my Favourite space. Absolutely beautiful. Exactly the feel I wanted. Open, mingling large bar area mezzanine overlooking another area, Beautiful terrasse. And they showed me pictures of wedding recpetions held there - beautiful.
Why I didn't pick it - didn't think the food was up to par. I still have 2 sampe menus they sent me and I wasn't overly impressed. Could send them to you if interested. I didn't want couscous or wraps appearing anywhere on my menu. Now I know they could have worked with me a bit, but I did go there to eat with my MOH and didn't think they'd be able to do the type of food I was looking for. 2nd reason - bar was a bit expensive. Drinks were charged at a per drink price and you just cap the open bar at a certain amount. We have big drinkers so I would have rather had a set price per head for open bar.

Le Local - amazing sounding food. Before I went to see it I was in LOVE with the menu options. Didn't go with it mostly because the room had too much of a reception feel for me. And the entrance and down to the bathroom wasn't very nice (through the restaurant). Very small bar so not really a mingling set up. Also the most expensive

Cluny Art Bar - loved the pictures!!! Half the space was perfect, but the food service area had too much of a cafeteria feel for me. Would have been ok for a cocktail hour between a ceremony and a reception at a different venue. http://www.fonderiedarling.org/louer_e/cluny.html

Pullman Wine Bar - prices were great, had 2 different rooms so mingling was expected. Food sounded interesting.... thought it would be too small. 60 would fit, but close to max cap. and no sit down http://pullman-mtl.com/

Apollo Bistro - where we're having it!!!!! I'm sure they could do a ceremony if you spoke with them. Apollo was and still is a catering company for 10 years. About 5 years ago they opened a byow and about 2 years ago they opened the bistro... it got 10s across the board from us. Very modern white interior, huge bar and some banquettes to create different spaces. Food is amazing - but more a tapas/small plate type - but they have a LOT of wedding experience, so can pretty much do anything. Charged a flat rate per hour of open bar. Have GREAT wines for the prices. so space, food, and the guy, Olivier who we dealt with all got top marks.
(also tables are made with recycled car hoods and everything else from other recycled materials, so there's an ethical aspect....)

but facebook has better pictures

Good luck!!

there's a few places that were recommended to me that I didn;t go see after I fell in love with Apollo.. Names are escaping me at the moment - when I remember them I'll write more

CBS tartinade, duck confit, and other 'specialty' products in MTL

I 2nd the ice cider... great stuff. And for the best smelly raw milk cheese I'd have to go with Epoisse (imo)!!! It's from France though but is my absolute favourite cheese. You can get it at most if not all the above mentionned cheese places at the markets (and also Vielle Europe on St. Laurent)

What is Montreal's Best Greek Restaurant?

Has anyone been to Rodos (on Parc)??? Just wondered as it hasn't been mentionned here. Or well I'm pretty sure it hasn't, I could have missed one post!!! We're having my daughter's baptism there on Oct 3 - I'll give you all a review afterwards. We went to Jardin de Panos, and the Greek restaurant on Fairmont (I think) corner Parc... and Rodos and Rodos was the only place where the guy was welcomming and seemed to want our business. I mean we're bringing 30 people on a Sun afternoon - what restaurant wouldn't want that??/ Jardin de Panos was the worst - took forever to talk to someone who knew what we were looking for (quote and info etc.) and then their menu was very very generic. Our fixed menu at Rodos is an ouzo appertif w/ fried calamari, eggplant and zucchini, taramasolata, tyrokafteri, skordalia and Greek salad. Then choice of grilled salmon, chicken or lamb chops with white/red wine and then coffee (as we're bringing a cake). $50/person. (I apologize for my Greek spelling, it's my husband not me who is Greek)

Empanadas in Montreal

There's also the Latino market on St. Laurent between Marianne and Mont Royal... can't remember the name but you can't miss it (beside Sakaris). I like La Chilenta but the Latino market has more different nationalities and their hot sauce is way way hotter!!!!

Just moved to Montreal, looking for good grocery store in Plateau with local produce

This is the CSA I joined, the drop off is on Berri behind the Mont Royal metro station every Wed between 5:30 - 6:30 : http://www.lesjardinsdupetittremble.ca/

Even if you haven't signed up for a vegetable basket they sell individual fruits, vegetables, eggs etc.

Finding Farm-Fresh Eggs

I joined a CSA this summer, specifically Les Jardins du petit tremble. They deliver the vegetable basket to the Plateau location every Wed between 5:30 - 6:30 and they sell eggs at the same time. You don't have to preorder or be a member of the CSA (well I'm 99% sure you don't have to be). They set up at 4449 Berri, which is just diagonally behind the Mont Royal metro. They're eggs are $5/dozen. I thought they were very tasty, even if a bit small (and not very uniform in size, but I guess that's more natural than the barcoded ones I'm used to). Anyway give them a try if you would like. They also sell vegetables and fruits at the same local - and like I said I'm pretty sure you can just go buy, the CSA basket was the only thing that had to be paid in advance

best calamari in town

My Greek husband swears by Marvins... I think it's a sentimental reason - cause I definitely don't love it. We do order it well done always, which I guess makes the batter a little crispier and maybe not so falling apart. A surprising rec would be Wienstein and Gavinos.. now I haven't had it in over a year but we were both surprisingly pleased with it. Very crispy, HUGE plate - we got it as an app to share and didn't finish our mains. I am not a huge tentacle fan though - so it prob didn't have too many tentacles!!!

Location for cocktail dinatoire wedding

only looked at le Cluny so far- but yeah these are exactly what I'm looking for!!! Now its all a matter of quotes etc.

Location for cocktail dinatoire wedding

The daylight factory looks very interesting... and my ceremony will be at St. Patrick's Basilica which is in walking distance to there...hmmmm thanks!!!

Location for cocktail dinatoire wedding

Hi guys I'm looking for restaurants to host a smallish wedding - say 40 - 70 people. I know that's a fairly large spread but if I fall in love with a locale that only holds 45 then I'll cut my guest list, but if it's larger then I'll invite more people.... I would like to have a cocktail dinatoire, which I guess is a hot/cold hors d'ouevres w/ a few stations, but no actual sit down meal. At least that's what I take it to mean. Already suggested to me are Pullman, Le Locale and Auberge St. Gabriel. I would prefer a restaurant, but I am not opposed to renting a space and hiring a caterer if it's affordable and trendy/simplistic. I am not made of money, but I don't spending a bit to get what I want - I guess I deally I would like it to be around $120 before tx/gratuity.... Thanks

ISO Delicious, thin chicken sausages, suitable for the BBQ

Volailles et Gibiers Fernando on Roy in the plateau also make a spicy chicken sausage

Sun night in Mtl

Hi - my husband and I are looking for somewhere to go out for dinner and a few drinks on Sun night... Is there anywhere that would be fun/interesting? Price range would be anywhere from $10 - $25 for a main course. We'd prefer plateau area or not too much further away - thanks.

Waldman's

Does anyone know what happened to Waldman's fish market?? Are they gone for good? Relocating?? Renovating???

What is Montreal's Best Greek Restaurant?

I'm surprised no one mentionned Panama???? On Jean Talon. I am married to a Greek and have been to Greece numerous times. Panama is the closest thing to a Greek taverne we have here in Montreal. It's kinds hokey looking but well it looks like they do in Greece. The fried zucchini and eggplant was AMAZING.... as well as the other pikilia we usually order there - keep in mind for the poster who didn't like the wine in water glasses, that they serve it like that at Panama - as well as every restaurant I ever ate at in Greece.

where can I find dried bergamot?

There's a great spice/oil store at Jean Talon Market, they might carry it. I forget the name, but it's in the main section, not the stalls.

Where to buy sea urchin

Waldman's (Roy x Coloniale) has them quite often. Not always though so I would also recommend calling first

Hot Wings in Montreal

I was not overly impressed with them - found them a bit chewy in texture...

Hot Wings in Montreal

I have to with Olde Orchard as well... I am not a wing fan, too much work for too little meat - but I get them every time I go to Olde Orchard (I have only eaten at the Prince Arthur location though). They are bigger than any wing I have ever had, and fall off the bone. My only complaint is that I order the kick ass hot variety (the hottest) and I think it could be hotter. I like spicy!!!! Don't get me wrong, it's spicy but if you're going to call it that, then make it hot!

Bad experience art Sparrow

My complaint with sparrow is that I have gone three times and the first 2 times it was closed. The first time was a fluke, as there was a notice on the door stating it was closed for a wedding a honeymoon for 2 weeks. I went a 2nd time around 11am on a weekday - closed.. no hours posted. Finally went this last Sat around 1pm and it was open... BUT the wait was over 45 minutes and we didn't want to stick around. So maybe eventually I'll get to try it out. Lucky for me its not too far from where I live.

Pokemon cake

A woman who works with my friend (in the west island) makes cakes on the side. She made one for my bf's 40th. It had a late 1950's fender stratocaster on it ,authentic enough that he recognized what it was right away. The cake looked amazing, but also tasted great. I am not a cake eater and I couldn't get enough of it. Everyone loved it. If it's not too late and you're interested email me and I'll get her info for you. I will never go anywhere else for another cake. rlbutler11@yahoo.com

Cape Cod Must Eats

Hi, we're heading down to Cape Cod in mid Sept for a week and I was wondering what some must eat restaurants are. We are definitely looking for seafood, particularly traditional cape cod/new england fare - clams, lobsters etc. We have no children so don't need a family style place. Budget is low to high range, I don't mind paying for a good meal. Does anyone have any suggestions for a few places to try out for lunch or dinner.. or hey if you have a good breakfast place let me know. Thanks!!!
