Planning 4th Trip... First time during FQ Festival. HELP, PLEASE!

Hello friends,
I will be traveling to New Orleans with my husband and another couple in April -- From 4/10 (Thurs) through 4/13 (Sun). My husband and I have been to New Orleans several times before, while our friends have not. We want to make their trip memorable, so I'm hoping you could help me out with some recommendations. We want to keep our breakfasts and lunches loose, so I'm not making any definite plans. Dinner is a different story -- Here's what I'm thinking:

Thursday night -- Happy Hour @ Cure, Dinner @ Cochon.
Friday and Saturday night dinners are currently open -- Considering the following: Boucherie, Brigsten's, Sylvain.

Are there any other places that you would recommend we consider for Friday & Saturday night dinner? We are looking for restaurants with good food, but nothing too stuffy or formal.

I have eaten at the following places -- August, Coquette, Herbsaint, Jacques Imos, Clancys, Commanders Palace, Cochon, MILA, Three Muses, Mr. B's. Pretty sure I am forgetting some of the other places we've visited. We are not picky eaters, so I'm open to just about anything. Not really interested in Italian food though. Local cuisine is a plus!

Also interested in good cocktail spots as well as live music venues or post-dinner entertainment.

Would love to hear from you with some ideas for our trip. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

One day in Santa Barbara... Dinner rec needed

Hello,
My husband and I will be passing through Santa Barbara soon. Looking for a restaurant with a casual but nice vibe and good food. We don't want Italian, as we are having that the very next day... Open to all other types of cuisine. Price range to be $$ to $$$. It happens to be our anniversary, so if there is anything special that we need to check out while in town, please feel free to mention that as well. Thanks in advance!!

ONE DAY IN LA -- DINNER REC NEEDED -- DOWNTOWN AREA

Hello all,
Husband and I will be in Los Angeles for one day. Staying in Little Tokyo. Looking for a restaurant rec in that area Downtown LA / Little Tokyo... Good food a must, nice ambiance a plus. Would like to stay in the $$ to $$$ price range. I'm not interested in Italian or French food. Thinking we'll have Mexican for lunch, so probably won't venture in that direction for dinner. Aside from this, I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks so much for your help in advance!!

GIRL'S WEEKEND TO NEW ORLEANS - ADVICE NEEDED

Thanks for the recommendation. We are going to be in town till about 4 pm on Sunday. However, since we don't have a hotel room for the day, we wanted to keep Sunday casual. I think we are going to attempt brunch at EAT or Stanley's.

GIRL'S WEEKEND TO NEW ORLEANS - ADVICE NEEDED

I did visit Emeril's for lunch on my last visit a few years ago. While the food was great (had the porkchop!), I wasn't crazy about the ambiance.
Finally decided on Herbsaint for dinner on Thursday - am pretty excited about that, as I have never been. Will consider Brigstens & August for Saturday night. Thank you!

GIRL'S WEEKEND TO NEW ORLEANS - ADVICE NEEDED

Yes, those lines at CDM can be brutal, especially with the summer heat & humidity factored in. Thanks for the tip!

I have dined at all 3 restaurants noted above as my Thursday options -- all were very different, but fantastic in their own way. Would you add any others to my list? I'm fishing for another option because there are 4 of us on this trip, and I'm suggesting that each girl eliminate one restaurant until we end up with the final one. Did that the last time I traveled in a group and it worked out quite well.

Thanks, again!

GIRL'S WEEKEND TO NEW ORLEANS - ADVICE NEEDED

Thanks for the response, Shanefink! Lunch at Commanders is set for 1:30 pm. Pretty sure that by 8:00 - 8:30, we'll be ready to eat again. Three Muses is definitely a contender for Fri night, but I wanted to supply the girls with some options and let them participate in some of the decision making.

With regards to Thurs, I doubt we will make it to all of the places on our cocktail tour list... It might be something we complete over the course of the weekend. Domenica sounds wonderful, I may try to make it out there for happy hour at some point. However, I'm not sure that we would want to do Italian or pizza for dinner.

Definitely planning on making Saturday all about a nice dinner. Have been to Coquette in the past for lunch and loved it.

Appreciate your feedback. Thanks!!

GIRL'S WEEKEND TO NEW ORLEANS - ADVICE NEEDED

I'll be traveling to New Orleans from Miami in about a month with 3 girlfriends. Two of us have been to N.O. several times, while the other two are virgins, so to speak. We're looking to eat well and have fun - we're in our early to mid 30s, by the way. Please review and feel free to comment or recommend better options.

Fly in on Thursday:
Planning a cocktail tour of New Orleans for the group - these places are on my list:
• Igors – Bloody Mary
• Napoleon House – Pimms Cup
• Carousel Bar – French 75
• Pat O’Brians – Hurricane (for the newbies in our group)
• Tropical Isle – Hand Granade (for the newbies in our group)
• Lafitte’s Blacksmith Bar-- anything.
• Old Absinthe House – Absinthe Frappe
• Tonique – Dark and Stormy
I'm sure we will end up having bar snacks here and there, so lunch doesn't concern me.

Dinner on Thursday -- OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS. I would like to go to a nice restaurant, but nothing too formal or stuffy. Definitely looking for southern or cajun cuisine. These were some of the places on my list:
-Mila
-Coquette
-Cochon

Friday's daytime eating -- Planning on a Cafe du Monde stop in the AM. Having a late lunch at Commander's Palace. Set in stone.

Dinner on Friday - OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS. Looking for a casual, fun, dinner spot - Not talking shorts and flip flops, but more like jeans and a nice top, kind of place. Will probably bounce around Frenchmen Street after dinner, so I had Three Muses down as a possible place. However, I would like to present the girls with some other options and am drawing a total blank. Originally, I had thought of Luke as well, but I've been reading mixed reviews. However, I hope this helps you understand what we are going for. Jacques IMOs is not an option - last time I was there, we waited 2+ hours for a table and the food was just ok, not the best experience.

My Saturday is not yet panned out either, but I'll get to that on another post (on another day)... Post is running rather long. Look forward to hearing from you and your suggestions!! I'm very excited to return to New Orleans and hope to plan out a trip for the girls that will blow their socks off.

Looking for some happy hour / dinner recs --- First San Francisco / Wine Country trip coming right up.

Hello all,

My husband and I will be heading over to SF from Miami in May for our 2 year anniversary. Looking for some help with the planning of our trip...I'm so overwhelmed with the options available!

We will spend our first 2 days in Wine country... Staying at the Ivy Hotel in Napa. Right now, I have reservations for the wine tour & tasting @ Schramsberg upon our arrival on Wednesday. Looking for another couple of wineries to visit in the Napa & Sonoma area. Would love some suggestions on wineries that are worth a visit and not too expensive, but definitely offer something special. We enjoy both red and white wines, so any and all suggestions are welcome. To be more specific, I prefer cabernets & pinot noirs to merlots.... I also prefer sauvignon blancs to chardonnays, but am willing to try anything while there.

On Thursday night, we have reservations for Bottega - Michael Chiarello's restaurant. Looking for a place to dine at on Wednesday night in Wine Country- something more casual and in the $$ range rather than the $$$-$$$$.

On our way into SF on Fri, we're going to stop at Pt. Reyes for a hike and thought it would be fun to go to the Hog Island Oyster Farm for a lunch/ picnic. Will continue on into the city & check into our hotel in Union Square. Looking for a fun happy hour spot for that night. I read about Barrique in F&W magazine & it sounded interesting. Is that a good Fri happy hour spot? Any other suggestions? Thinking about doing sushi for dinner after happy hour and have seen several recommendations on this board that are quite pricey. Any options out there that are good and not quite at the $$$-$$$$ range? Looking for fresh fish - authentic sushi is great, but it would also be great if they offered some fusion / interesting rolls.

We'll probably head into Chinatown on Saturday for lunch -- Thinking about Golden Star Vietnamese for some pho. Is there a better place in the area for Pho or noodle soup?

Will do Sunday lunch @ Yank Sing on Spear St. as it's been mentioned repeatedly on the board and appears to be a well liked option for dim sum.

One last thing... Looking for a cute, quaint, romantic restaurant for dinner on Saturday night, since it will be our final dinner in SF before we head back home. Open to any and all suggestions here.... up to the $$$ ok.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions! As you can see, I am all over the place.

Happy Miami Spice 2010 (2 U) !!!

I went to Smith & Wollensky for the Miami Spice on Saturday. We were seated upstairs, which was a first for us. All in all it was an unpleasant experience. One of the first things that left a bad taste in my mouth was the fact that we were left at our table unattended for 15 minutes before being approached by our server. When he finally made his way over to us for the first time, he literally dropped the menus at our table, asked if we knew what we wanted to drink (mind you, we didn't even have the wine list for 2 seconds to review), and walked away. I tried to stop him because he didn't even bother to give me his name and responded with a hand raise, as if saying "wait", and continued to run off. When he came back, he didn't bother to introduce himself, took our order and dashed off again. We didn't see our server again until it came time to drop off the check. Even then, we had to have another server contact him because he was no where to be seen. Not what you would expect from this caliber a restaurant.

My husband ordered the watermelon salad and I the ceasar. Both were served on the warm to hot side, which was a bit of a turn off. It appeared as though they were sitting around for a while before they got to our table. Both of us also ordered the filet which was overcooked and appeared to also have been sitting under a heat lamp for some time. The steak was dry and while mine was under seasoned, my husbands was a bit on the salty side. My desert, the peach cobbler, was served cold... So much so, that the ice-cream did not melt. The only thing that we really enjoyed was the truffled mac n cheese (which we paid full price for), along with our split bottle of wine and cocktail.

Our overall experience was a HUGE let down. However, I did write an email to the general manager expressing my discontent and he did invite my party back to dinner free of charge, so I guess that does make up for it a little.

I think the wings at Titanic Brewery in Coral Gables (by UM Campus) are pretty fantastic. They are fried, crispy, tender, and spicy!!

Trip coming up.... Some rec's needed

Thursday's meals are just for me and the hubby... Our friends get in late Thursday evening, so they will probably just meet up with us for drinks. We will be with them all of Friday and Saturday, and they leave first thing Sunday, while the husband and I leave Sunday night. We'll be brunching alone.

I will make a point of checking out Bar Uncommon - it's on my list! Thanks.
