Shrimp Pimp is on Glendon south of Wilshire almost every Tuesday for lunch.
Benihana Style Suggestions
I have been one time and that was many, many years ago so I cannot vouch for how good/bad it is. In the Westin Prince Hotel (York Mills and Leslie) is Katsura. Per their website it is "one of Toronto's most popular and authentic Japanese restaurants where you can choose from a variety of dining options - Teppenyaki Tables, private Tatami Rooms, a Sushi Bar, and a main dining area only". I remember it wasn't cheap maybe $50-$75 per person. An easy drive from downtown (off the Don Valley Parkway).
man fook low style dim sum on the westside
Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I have had the Pork Bao from Feast From the East (www.ffte.com) on Westwood Blvd. It is quite large and tasty enough to satisfy a craving. The filling is similar to a steamed char siu bao but the dough is round and smooth and not "peaked" the way the regular ones usually are.
Best use of Gorgonzola/Blue Cheese
I have had a "grilled cheese" made with raisin bread and gorgonzola served with port. Sorry not a pairing with beer but really delicious.
Alexander Keith's in LA?
I'm just a Canadian trying to find a beer from home for someone who had a hankering.
Alexander Keith's in LA?
Thanks. I did call them. They are mainly in Buffalo and Detroit areas - draft only form. Bottles on the schedule but not soon. No plans for western distribution of draft or bottles.
Alexander Keith's in LA?
Does anyone know if Alexander Keith's is served in LA (tap or bottle)?
Thanks.
Peking Duck
I have never tried it but overheard in Chinese food court line up that the peking duck at Peking Man on Sheppard, west of Leslie was awesome. Hopefully someone has tried it and can verify.
Anything like Sam Woo in the Southbay/LAX area?
When I have a craving for char sui baos, I order them from Wacky Wok on Washington in Venice/Marina del Rey (3 large ones for $5). They are pretty good and they curb the craving. They also have steamed shrimp dumplings which are only okay but again they curb the craving. WW has char sui on their menu but I have never ordered it.
Hop Li has roast duck on it's menu but I have not had anything from this restaurant.

Steamed chicken with ginger dipping sauce?
I too have major CRAVINGS for this type of chicken as well as soy sauce chicken. I have found steamed white chicken that is close enough to my mother's version and ones I can buy in Toronto bbq shops at Little Hong Kong Cafe on Sawtelle in West LA.
I have tried Hainan chicken rice as it sounded so close to the Chinese version but I was incredibly disappointed. There is nothing worse when trying to satisfy a craving to have something that is not even close to what you want.
I have given up trying to find Chinese food prepared in the same way I have grew up with - the search can never be satisfied. Hopefully you will find a good enough substitute...
ISO Restaurant w/ meeting room on West Side
Napa Valley Grilled (Glendon, north of Wilshire) has 3 private dining rooms but not sure if any will be large enough to accommodate your size (maybe the can be combined).
W Hotel also has a private dining room but not sure of size.
Must haves at Providence?
Foie gras ravioli. We added it to our 5 course tasting menu.
Where should I go for Monday night dinner?
It is $35 a person. The menu from Jan 7th was:
APPETIZER
JiRaffe Style Caesar Salad OR Herb Gnocchi with Florida Rock Shrimp
ENTRÉE
Marinated Pork Loin OR Pan Roasted Striped Bass
DESSERT
Pear and Chocolate Brioche Bread Pudding OR Served with Warm Apple Butter Sauce
Full description of menu is at this link:

chocolate croissants in OC or LA
Paris Pastry on Westwood Blvd - I think 3 stop lights south of Wilshire. Delicious. Not in the traditional shape.
Care package for a friend in Bahrain
I miss many Canadian things though some American versions are available. Here are my suggestions if the actual Canadian product isn't available over there:
Kraft Dinner
any PC sauce
Cereal
Ketchup and Dill Pickle chips, Hickory Sticks
Jergens non-scented lotion
Smarties (plain m&ms don't cut it)
Twizzlers (US version of Twizzlers and Red Vines are horrific)
My care packages from Toronto cost a mint to send to me in LA, so I can't imagine the cost to Bahrain - you're a great friend.
Help - Etobicoke/Mississauga Restaurant
Looking for a restaurant to meet up with friends for dinner when in town for Christmas next month. Price not an issue. All cuisines except sushi please (we live in LA and since the Chinese food is so different, we have sushi way too much).
They live in Oakville and we've been to is Jonathan's in Downtown Oakville with them. I know there are other options in Oakville but we would prefer not to travel that far as we will be staying up in Stouffville and they won't be willing to go to downtown TO.
Thanks.
One night in T.O., German needs recs
Is Smokeless Joe's on John Street still good? It used to have great a selection of beers/micros and food was decent too.
Abode Restaurant
Had dinner there recently on a Saturday night. $400 with tax before tip for 4 people:
3 appetizers (oysters 4 ways, oyster special - 6 from NZ and foie gras)
4 entrees (lamb, halibut, yellow tail and beef tenderloin "paella style")
1 dessert (study of chocolate)
1 bottle of wine $95, 2 glasses of wine and 2 vodka martinis
Not an expensive meal but the overall consensus was that the food did not warrant the prices (entrees were mid to high $30s). Presentation was lovely but you can't eat presentation.
Gave it a whirl based on the reviews on the this board and close proximity to where we live but most likely would not return.
Spin
Items aren't expensive and the food is fresh. I'm not super fond of their sides - fusilli brocolli and french fries are what I consider to be their best. The chicken is usually moist and flavoured nicely. My husband loves their RGW wrap with white meat - have to ask specifically for white meat.
Their salads are huge and also quite good. Our favourites are the Thai ginger chicken and the house chop. Pita and garlic spread (?) come with all orders.
They also serve fresh lemonade.
Drive through may seem more convenient but going into the restaurant is usually quicker. You can also call ahead for pick up and they deliver - not sure of area.
Global - not very satisfactory.
Was in TO for Xmas and had dinner at the Globe Bistro on a Friday night. I made the reservation for 4 on Tuesday for 8:00 pm after calling Trevor which was so busy they offered us 5:30 pm or 9:30 pm.
It was quite busy at the bar and in the restaurant. Caution - lack of parking is a real issue. The Green P was packed and we had to circle the residential streets for a parking spot - not easy. Really could use valet parking a la LA...
The four of us had a great dinner. 4 starters (beets w/proscuitto, lobster bisque, foie gras and one other), 4 (2 farmers plate, lobster, grilled fish) mains, 2 desserts, 2 cappucinos, 2 coffees and 1 bottle of wine was $300 before tip.
The two that had the farmers plate (lamb 3 ways) loved their dish - I thought they were going to lick their plates.
We sat in the corner by the stairs to the next level. Tables too close together for private conversation and the room temp was a bit warm. Only kink in the evening was the fire alarm that went off when a server came through an emergency exit door and it took a while to turn off (probably only 3-4 minutes) but felt longer due to the piercing noise.
I would highly recommend GB as food was fantastic and not very expensive. Decor - didn't love it, didn't hate it but wouldn't consider it to be a romantic dinner location.
Rice flour vs. glutinous rice flour in daikon cake???
If the recipe is not too long, would you mind posting it?
Woodflame wood burning portable grill
Thanks embee. Last question - does it smoke when you cook?
Their website claims it doesn't as it cooks at such high heat.
Thanks again.
Woodflame wood burning portable grill
How much is the woodflame and which model do you have?
Amadeus Bavarian Bierstube?
Was there on a Saturday night a few weeks back. We ate on the right side - more casual. It was about 1/2 full. Didn't see how busy the more formal side was. Band was playing.
For dinner, my hub had the farmers feast (lots of pork), I had breaded fried chicken, our other dining partners had schnitzel and the pork hock. We split the salmon starter - really tasty. Everything was nicely prepared. The one person with the German background had been there before with his parents and his parents loved it.
Its a fun place to go especially if you polka.
dinner and music
For a good polka, visit Amadeus on Richmond at York St. There are two parts, a formal restaurant (left side) and a more casual eatery (right side) but both parts share the dance floor and the live polka band.
Was there on Saturday night had a nice meal and a couple of polkas.
Romantic dinner under $100...can it be done??
Its been a few years since I've been there, but I remember Bodega on Baldwin St being fairly romantic. And wasn't very expensive.

Reel Inn
Actually ended up going. I had the fish and chips - did not like the fish, I prefer beer battered (not sure what it was corn meal??). Fries were okay. Coleslaw unmemorable. Hub had tuna steak.
Overall food not inedible but words like satisfying, yummy and delicious do not spring to mind. Our meal cost $30 including a soft drink and beer. Would not voluntarily return. Though I can see the attraction of the Reel Inn on a nice summer day or evening. Maybe the weather changes the way the food tastes...
Thai for 20?
Golden Thai - they also have prix fixe menus with different price points - couldn't find an online link for it.

Reel Inn
I am being pressured to go to dinner at the Reel Inn. There are plenty of positive/negative reviews though the review posted on Oct 14 by jimjp300 makes me not inclined to go at all.

Is it worth a meal/drink for me to sit at a picnic table on a Saturday night in November and potentially freeze my buns off? It doesn't seem like it to me...but the pressure is being applied.
Thanks.
Classic Detroit Lunch place
What is a classic must eat place in Detroit? Something that a 9 year old can go to...
Thank you!
