hot chicken shacks

Thanks, everyone, for the input......went to Hart & Hunter about 6 months ago for the chicken skin sandwich and other good stuff.....don't know HOW I missed the Hot Chicken, but will certainly return soon....VERY excited about the Prince rumor....Prince's doesn't have a website, so maybe will give them a jingle......

hot chicken shacks

Nashville is famous for it's 'hot chicken', soaked in buttermilk, double fried, and slathered in a cayenne/garlic red paste just before serving. The addictive quality of this fare has even reached Portland, Oregon with Cackalack's Hot Chicken Shack. (see article in this month's Saveur).........Does ANYONE in the Los Angeles area serve anything like this???? And, if not, would somebody please get on it????

Genova ravioli

Genova italian delicatessan on Telegraph Ave. in Oakland is a Bay Area icon.....I have been eating there since I was kid, and I am in my 70's now. Their ravioli are a revelation....little delicate pillows, filled with meat or cheese and spinach. I have never found anything like them in Los Angeles or anywhere else for that matter. Whenever I visit the Bay Area, I fill a cooler with ice and bring home 8 or 10 boxes. Last year, I briefly saw them in Handy's Market in Burbank, but they no longer carry them. Has anyone ever seen Genova ravioli in any market or Italian deli anywhere in the greater Los Angeles area??

tavern or bouchon

You might consider Tar & Roses in downtown Santa Monica....make sure you get a table on the back patio....not so noisy. One of the best restaurants on the Westside....lots of variety for every palate...bone in wood fired ribeye is incredible and flash cooked whole fish...lots of intriguing side dishes. They also have 3 or 4 options for family style dinners....perfect for a large group.

fried chicken for a party

Eagle rock/pasadena area......but it's OK if the chicken is at room temp. That's why I didn't want anything too heavily breaded that has to be eaten piping hot, but is rather revolting when cool. I love Honey's Kettle-fried, but their crunchy batter, which holds in all that succulent juiciness, turns to brittle blah when it cools down......

fried chicken for a party

I'm looking for the best take out fried chicken in los angeles.....for a party. I need 20 to 30 pieces of high quality (not over breaded) chicken that's a cut or two above KFC. Can anyone recommend a restaurant that would fry up a fresh batch of chicken for a party?

Sonoma Wine Country Sausage

OK.....I don't want to start a discussion about Guy Fieri: his TV show, his restaurants, or his over-the-top personality.....and all the ridicule it inspires. BUT, I tried his smoked Sonoma Wine Country Sausage at a market closeout special.......and loved it. Cannot now find it anywhere. Has anybody run across it in the L.A. area??? I know Costco carries some of his stuff, but I don't belong and haven't checked there yet.....

cheap steak

Lots of expensive options in LA for great steak....my current being the bone in ribeye at Tar and Roses in Santa Monica and the old reliable Monty's on Topanga. But sometimes you want something that's rare and juicy without spending over 50 dollars.......any favorite neighborhood steakatoriums that one would recommend??

grilled carne asada

I live in an apt. complex, so I can't do my own charcoal grilling......I'm looking for a vendor/restaurant where I can buy carne asada by the pound to go that has already been grilled. Nothing beats that char-grilled flavor. I guess I could just get a carne asada plate to go at any restaurant......but I'd prefer to buy it ala carte, and then bring it home for reheating later to make quesadillas......Any suggestions?

wong farms hydroponically grown tomatoes

I visited Santa Monica Farmers Market yesterday and bought some Wong Farms tomatoes....they are delicious....juicy and bursting with real tomatoey flavor....apparently grown almost year round in the desert in the Salton Sea area. I am trying to find out where else in the L.A. area I can purchase these great tomatoes. I can't find a web site or even a phone number for Wong Farms...Do they go to any other farmer's markets?? I live in No. Hollywood, so I'm trying to find something closer than Sta. Monica. Any info would be appreciated....

stinky cheese

i'm looking for a german-european deli in the LA area that offers Bierkase, a foil-wrapped, strong smelling cheese from Germany. It's not as strong as limburger, but more so than tilsit or port salut. It doesn't seem to be as available as it use to. Yes, it's strong, but very rich tasting, and goes great when mixed with german cold cuts in sandwiches or melted on a hot dog. Any ideas for a source?
