New GREEK Restaurant coming to Applegarth Road, Monroe

Unfortunately they do have a lunch menu but you have to ASK for it!?!? I suspect this is their strategy but they are pricing people out by doing this.

This place is top shelf for sure and most definitely the best rest. Monroe Township has to offer at the moment but I wonder how much longer they have. Too bad they can't tweak things a bit. I take all my clients there but of course the company pays.

Note: GET THE CALAMARI! I am amazed no one has mentioned it! I normally hate the tentacles but I'll eat every one here.

New Brunswick restaurants open Monday nights for business dinner?

We ended up at Clydz as in the end I could not justify the NYC prices of steak at Steahouse85. Can New Brunswick really get away with charging $47 for an ala carte 12 oz tenderloin??

Loved the feel of Clydz We were seated in the upper dining room and the weathered brick was quite handsome. The highlights of the night were the game meatballs and the diver scallops. The latter was served with pappardella in a cream sauce. Scallops were fresh and cooked perfectly. It is worth noting that I think the dish came with, if I can recall correctly: 8! of them. All of our other entrees were more in accord with the smaller portions/big presentation you normally find at higher end establishments.

The rest of us tried the game (because we had to, right?!?!) which was ok. Heavier on taste/lacking a bit in tenderness.

Martini's were, of course, outstanding. Bar was packed on our exit.

I would be negligent if I did not mention the EXCELLENT service. Attentive, proactive and always available.

Overall a great night.

We ended up at La Spigola last night. I've posted on that also.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions as we'll be frequenting NB more often and intend to try them all out.

La Spigola - Hamilton Rt 130

Considering the dearth of (good) upscale eateries in the area I'm surprised there's not more chatter on the board about this restaurant. While a bit on the expensive side, I've really never been disappointed by a meal there. I will say that I tend to stay away from the chicken and pasta dishes while focusing on the steak/fish/osso buco. My reasons are two-fold: 1) there are places nearby that do similar at least as well for cheaper (although almost all the chicken dishes there are under $20) and more importantly 2) the filet (especially) and NY strip are really out of this world. I can't tell you how many times I've been disappointed at a high end eatery by a mediocre cut of beef. Is $37 too much to pay for a tender tightly grained cut that's pushing 16oz and includes a veggie and starch side? Certainly not in my book.

Note the bread service (sliced&toasted peasant w/olive oil, roasted garlic and kalamata olives) is incredible as is the Tiramisu.

I also give it a +1 for service and decor. Some may call it a bit over the top but if it is, it's certainly not in the typical gaudy North Jersey style. Much more modern vs overdone marble and statues.

I am very interested to hear others take on this place!

Still undecided. I think you have me leaning to Steakhouse 85. I'll write up whichever place we go. I appreciate everyones feedback!

This looks nice. One fear I have is that 3 of the guys I'll be with are pretty big eaters. We got burned in NYC going to one of these high end places where we ended up with 8 courses and stopping for pizza at Rays on the way home. Food was great but sparse.

If I was on my own, I think I'd go here.

Steakhouse85 would be an option but I've been dissapointed by so many high end steakhouses that I tend to stick with what I know is great. When you pay those prices...

Their web site seems a bit hokey. I worry when a place that charges that much would put such little effort into their presentation to the public.

How does it compare to a Flemings or Gibsons?

New Brunswick restaurants open Monday nights for business dinner?

Need to plan a dinner for half a dozen people this Monday. We've about expended our options down here in Cranbury and are thinking that jumping on 8A up to NB might be a good idea. Problem is I really haven't eaten there aside from the Frog and the Peach over 12 years ago. (I've been there for jury duty but pizza at Filipos doesn't count!). Is NB still a foodie hotspot?

Anyway, nothing too exotic (ie-no Indian, Vietnamese, etc). Trying to keep away from Italian as we have another dinner on Wed.

All that being said, great food is the number one requirement.

Thanks...Nick

In search of fresh pasta

How about a more pedestrian place?

Help please! [near Freehold]

Don't bother with any other Chinese places until you've went here. So close to home too.

Pino's is pricey but close to home. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here but you're paying $20 for pasta. Not good.

Ladies Bday Lunch near Monroe

La Villa on Applegarth. They just put in a new room. Above average food for your standard italian place. You wonder how they make a profit on the prices they charge.

I like the three below but if you're on a budget, La Villa.

Ouzo portions are insane.

Suggestions for a Birthday dinner around Monmouth Junction

Great classy atmosphere but you can still go casual/jeans. Decent food. They have a downstairs room and an upstairs room. It's the only nice place around here really.

In Des Plaines for two nights this week - need recommendation

I looked over a few of the other posts but they seemed to gravitate to fine dining and I'm not looking for that. Looking for a good hearty meal moderate to a bit upscale is ok. No steak as we are probably hitting Gibsons up one night. Thanks...

Downtown Manhattan next Wed night...need top notch recommendation.

OK..here is my promised review of Del Posto. I'll keep it short, sweet and stream-of-consciousness….arrived almost an hour before 6pm reservation…setting was grand without being overdone…slummed at the bar for about 45 minutes eating (garlic infused?) chips and other unrecognizable bar snacks...interesting watching them dress the troops for the night ahead…at our table before 6, we decided on the 5 course…initial offering was a wonderful shot of capon consume tethered with a savory, crunchy tidbit whose texture can best be described as a Rocher Hazlenut candy and tasting like a well-aged library book. The mortadella stuffed puff pastry reminded me most of a high quality baloney mash…not my thing…antipasti was an amazingly tender and creamy calamari along with a tartare which was high in flavour but I found the texture a little too high in egg compared to others that I've had…spaghetti with dungess/jalepeno was a nice spark to the meal but it was the garganelli/meat sauce that really had it's way with me…simply delicious..hearty without being heavy…unfortunately, either portion was no more than a couple mouthfuls, but maybe that comes with the territory when taking sup in these lofty peaks…our last dishes were the bouillabaisse and lamb…addition of the broth after the seafood was plated was a nice touch and required a call for a third round of bread for sop…lamb was bountiful in flavor but a much smaller portion than even I expected. Only dessert of note was the ice cream that accompanied my ricotta petit four…not much bigger than a melon ball but as silky a frozen confection that I've ever had.

All that above being said, I will freely admit that 3 guys 6'+/200 lbs each that are more acclimated to a night out at Keens or Peter Lugers might not be giving Del Posto a fair shake…and I know that you don’t go to a chess match expecting a hockey game. What saved us from walking away hungry vs a hair under satisfied was the bread service, which was wholly utilized to clean up most plates after each offering. For it's niche, I can only imagine DP at least meets if not exceeds it's intended goal. Seeing various posts about the food quality and the such being sub-par is, to me, silly. Each dish felt and tasted that it came across exactly as it was intended to be. And if I had the option to go back to the bar and enjoy the calamari followed by a healthy portion of the Bolognese, I'd be a once a month regular….if it were closer!

Note price was $95 pp which is $20 lower than what's listed on the website.

Big Ed's BBQ

The BiG Eds on 130 was the bomb for the price you paid. And owned independent from the Matawan place. RIP.

I've been to the Rt 34 restaurant and it doesn't hold a candle.

Del Posto it is.

My fellow co-worker is worried that he'll walk out hungry though. I'd hate to think that for $130/pp you would but ...

We have a vendor coming in and taking us out on the 23rd.He says pick the best place we can find. Fancy, classy, simple or just plain grubby or dirty as long as it's 'the best' (ie-food)! Take price out of the equation. I would like to omit classic steakhouses and anything Asian as that seems to be the only places I've been to in New York the last two years. Price is a non-issue and I'd also like to restrict this to downtown Manhattan. Seafood and Steak Tartare are my fav's but I digress...

I do promise the group an extensive review on Thursday!

Thanks again...PK

Anyone tried Luchentos in Millstone yet??

Any Italian place with moderate ambiance in that neck of Manalapan/Millstone will draw people. Lots of cash there with low expectations.

Been there three times with work people. Service friendly but horrible two of the three times. Kids or relatives working the floor (not good). Food was ok but I will mention that the meatballs and gravy are above average vs so much of the dreck in our area. Sciclian calamari is nothing to speak of. Sit on the other side of the wall if you want to hear yourself think. Night and day from the big room.

Any great meal deals in Central NJ? 2-1's? Etc...

Thanks....I'm going to check all these out...

I want to take the family out during the week and with things being what they are, I'd like to save a few bucks instead of dropping $80-100 bucks for a family of 5 (if I'm lucky). Aside from doing the pizza thing, are there any (good) places offering mid-week or early bird specials? Aside from Fri and Sat, I hate to pay full price. There have to be some places in souther Middlesex/Monmouth counties that want your business.

thanks...Nick

New Thai Restaurant Old Bridge NJ

My wife and kids went there while I was away on business. They gave it high marks but warned the 3 star Pad Thai (vs the milder 1 or slightly hotter 2) will annihilate you. My son likes it hot but it was even too much for him.

I still can't imagine this place beating out Thai Chili in Spotswood.

Capuano Ristorante Italiano in WEST WINDSOR

I don't see any reference on the boards to this killer little restaurant. I work in Cranbury and we take out of town visitors here almost 50% of the time. Located in a non-descript strip mall. Small pizzeria in the front but very nice sit down in the back. The specials have yet to disappoint. Make sure you visit the one on Clarksville Rd. There is another (unrelated) place of similar name in the area that may be of nominal quality (untested by me).
