The View Revolving restaurant...Desser Buffet
Martin. Wow! 100% helpful and on-topic response!
I've been to the View for the Sunday Brunch (it's one of my go-to places for brunch when I have out-of-towners visiting) but didn't know they had a dessert buffet. That sounds more appealing than a whole dinner there. Thanks for the tip!
Oh, and there's a couple of other attended toilets in the city. Saddest of all is 88 Palace in Chinatown (right under the Manhattan Bridge approach in the mall on E Broadway). It totally reminds me of Hong Kong, but the bathroom, back past the fish tanks, down the dank hall, with the old guy sitting by the door with a small assortment of aftershaves and a plate with $1 in it is a bit sad.

Pizza delivery at midnight downtown?
Yeah, that neighborhood clears out pretty early. (Or, it used to--more and more people are living in Battery Park City and the Financial District, but restaurants are lagging behind the arrivals). Good luck!
I'm sure the Ritz could send up a pie. ;-)
Chinese anyone?
Maybe it's because Chinatown is mostly Cantonese? Hadn't thought about that before.
Paneer Tikka
Argh! This is my and my wife's favorite dish as well, and we can never find a good one in the US. We fell in love with it in Hong Kong, at my favorite hole-in-the wall Indian place in Mid-Levels near Lan Kwai Fong, Gunga Din's. http://www.gungadins.com/ Haven't been there in years, but I can still taste their Paneer Tikka...
Dinner Recs for two 19 year olds
I'm with Good Health Gourmet that more info would help, but.... being an East Village food eater, I'll give some recommendations.
Esparanto: Brazilian. De-lish. Hip. There's some orange stew that comes in a pot that is great. I had too many cocktails to recall it's name.
Italian: For old-school New York Italian, there's always John's. Sit in the back by the huuuge candle.
You didn't mention Japanese, but if you're good with your chopstick skills, I love Shabu Tatsu. If you saw Lost in Translation, the place where they got slices of raw beef and swirled them in boiling water to cook them--that's shabu shabu. Google it. Lots of fun.
I can't believe I'm going to recommend this, but... for Indian, go to one of the two upstairs places on 2nd Ave just south of 6th st. Pick whichever has a better hawker and most chili lights hanging from the ceiling. The food is terrible, but cheap, and the ambiance is unique. If I was 19, I would think it's pretty fun.
Or, for a wackier evening, Lucky Cheng's and their drag waiter/waitresses. I haven't eaten there, but it's wacky.
After dinner, go sulk on St Marks between 2nd and Ave A and pretend to be a punk in the 1980s. Think Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan, with a bit of Michael Jackson "Thriller" thrown in. Rest In Peace.
The places you are prohibited to go to are Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, or TGIFriday's. Especially in Times Square. Doubly so if you go to the M&M store for desert. Sheesh, people. Get with the program.
What do you think? Helpful? Off the mark? Comments?

Chinese anyone?
My go-to Chinese place outside of Chinatown (or Queens) is Grand Sichuan, especailly on St Marks. It's not in your 'hood, but you could get dinner there then drinks in the East Village. PDT and Angel's Share are both a short walk away...

Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES
Good choice, if you're looking for a kosher deli. Waaay better than Katz (even if it's not the same show). But 2nd Ave & Ben's (the other classic in my book) are expensive for what they are.

Asia de Cuba! I haven't thought about that place in years! I used to stay at the Morgan for work (in the late '90s before I moved here) and room service was from there. And I'd go down for dinner with friends and clients. Very hip & trendy, but that was 10 years ago. Good food from when fusion was funky.

Nunu Chocolate on Atlantic Avenue: how is it?
When I hear my grandmother describe her run-ins with stores and restaurants (which she -loves- to replay because she's so steamed), it always sounds very reasonable. "I just wanted a taste and they yanked the tray away and gave me a dirty look." or "Should I have to put up with having my chair bumped over and over by the busboys ruining my dinner?"
Nunu Chocolate on Atlantic Avenue: how is it?
Maddie, don't take this the wrong way, but this totally reminds me of when my grandma took me to See's Candies in Reseda in LA when I was a kid. They had a little tray of samples, and she went to town on them. What she didn't eat, she wrapped into napkins and put into her purse (trying to be sly while doing it). When the sales person lightly suggested she might wish to purchase an assortment, she puffed up and said, "I *was* going to buy a big box, but now I'm never coming back!" and left. Of course, next time we'd visit, we'd go back and she'd chow-down on the samples.
Also, we dreaded eating out with her because it was traditional at the end of every meal that she would complain to the manager, trying to get a discount. Offers of hosting wedding rehersal dinners and bar/bat mitzvahs for a large family were dangled if a fair discount for the horrible problems (slow service, drafty, noisy, cold food, coffee too hot, etc) was offered.
Sorry, but your story just made me cringe when I read it!
