Need Recipe: "Better" Green Bean Casserole

You specify "2 medium-large mushrooms". Can I assume you mean "2 pounds"?

Need Recipe: "Better" Green Bean Casserole

Anyone have a recipe for this Thanksgiving classic that isn't as full of fat and salt as the mushroom soup/French's fried onion ring version that is so common?

Looking for real North Carolina food

Maybe not typical Southern but they use a lot of local ingredients. I guess that makes them kinda Southern, no?

I'd add The Lantern in Chapel Hill to this list.

CholaNad - Chapel Hill, NC

I've never been a big fan of Indian food. A long time ago I tried some that I didn't like. I realize there are different styles and I don't know what style I had.

I'd like to try again, though. I don't care for the highly spiced cumin-laden dishes. And I don't want anything too spicy. Could someone tell me what dishes at Cholanad, if any, I might enjoy? For that matter, what dishes at any of the Indian restaurants in the Triangle might be good.

Thanks.

Blue Plate Mayonnaise in NC?

Thanks for the link. I'll see if there's a way to contact them and ask where to get it.

Update: Just sent them an email asking if it's available anywhere in the Triangle.

Blue Plate Mayonnaise in NC?

A recent issue of Cook's Country magazine chose Blue Plate Real Mayonnaise as its top choice. It's supposedly a "powerhouse brand" in the South and Southeast. I've looked for it in a couple of chain supermarkets in the North Carolina Triangle area but have come up short. Anyone know where I can get it around here?

I'm not trying to start any mayonnaise wars here. Frankly, I can't stand the stuff but my wife loves it. She's been a big Hellman's fan all her life but wants to see what the fuss is about the Blue Plate.

501 Diner in Chapel Hill

I was gonna add to my previous post, "Must be a southern thing". After 3 years here, I guess I'm beginning to think that way. That, and retirement, will make you slow down a bit. ;-)

501 Diner in Chapel Hill

Closed on Mondays? I've never heard of a diner closed any mornings, at least in the NJ area where I lived before moving here. Saturday, or any other nights, well, I don't really expect diners to be open at night anyway so that isn't a big deal for me.

Thanks for the info.

501 Diner in Chapel Hill

Does anyone know if the 501 Diner in Chapel Hill is still in business? I drove by there this morning at about 9:00 and saw not a single car in the parking lot and what appeared to be a dark interior. I didn't see any signs on the windows and I didn't get out of the car to see if anyone was inside. I'm guessing they aren't closed on Mondays. It's a diner! Perhaps a vacation. Anyone know?

romansperson,

Would that be Hillsborough BBQ or A&S who's offering smoked turkeys?

Durham-Hillsborough Lunch?

Downtown Hillsborough has 3 restaurants with outdoor seating. At two of these (Gulf Rim and The Wooden Nickel) I've seen patrons with dogs. Just down the street from them is Antonia's (at the site of the former Tupelo restaurant) but I don't recall ever seeing dogs there.

Seaffod in Raleigh??

From the outside this looks like a typical fried seafood joint. I see from the menu that they offer some broiled and grilled items. Would someone looking for something other than Calabash style seafood find enough other choices at Kemps?

Hillsborough BBQ Company - opening soon. (Hillsborough, NC)

"The Brisket is much improved now that they are using a different cut of meat it is much more lean."

Excuse me? I'm no chef but isn't "the brisket", well, the brisket? If you use another cut of meat it isn't brisket, is it? It may taste different or better but it's something else, right? Or did I misunderstand?

Pie Bird - Extremely Long Wait For Mediocre Food (Raleigh)

Can I play Devil's Advocate for a moment? Why shouldn't we judge a restaurant in its first week? Don't restaurants have soft openings for a few days or weeks so they can work out the kinks? If not, why not? Why should they experiment on the public? Likewise, if a restaurant isn't ready for business, why do they open? If I'm going to spend more than a few dollars for a meal I expect better service and quality than I'm reading here.

Th' Rat- Chapel Hill

August still sounds overly optimistic to me. That's 5 months to get the legal stuff squared away, demo 6 rooms (what, maybe 2500 square feet?), then remodel and pass all the inspection. Who know what surprises they'll find tearing out all the old stuff? I'd say this time next year sounds more reasonable.

Th' Rat- Chapel Hill

Anyone got any new info on this? I see one of the old posts said they were planning to open in early 2011. I walked by there they other day and I see no signs of any work going on. I could kinda see through one of the windows and it didn't look like anything had been moved in years. Has this deal fallen through or just been set back?

I never experienced the old Rat having been in the Triangle area for only 2 years now. I was looking forward to trying it out but now I'm not so sure it'll ever happen.

Triangle Restaurant Week

I'm going to "The Artisan" this week with a group of 8. I've never been there. Do the "get" restaurant week, as an earlier post put it? Also, your thoughts on "The Artisan"

Just curious--why are the places she's been to "out"? I would imagine returning to any of the places you mentioned would be fine if she enjoyed her previous visits.

Going with a bunch of folks for Triangle Restaurant Week and was wondering about the food at night rather than lunch. But thanks for that--I'll file it away for the future.

Piola in Chapel Hill Open(?)

Just went there today for lunch. Quick review: pizza was good (nice thin crust), service was spotty.

I ordered a pizza and a side salad. Just before, I heard someone at a table next to me order the same thing and the waitress asked if he wanted the salad first. That should have made me suspicious. Who eats a salad *with* their pizza? I wasn't asked if I wanted my salad first (by a different waitress). Sure enough, the guy next to me gets his pizza then, 30 seconds later, a server delivers his salad.

A few minutes later out comes my pizza. Then, the server brings the salad. I tell him I don't want it since I expected it before my pizza. He says "OK" and returns. You can guess what happens next. The check arrives with the salad still on it. I tell the waitress and she goes to have it removed. No problem there. She did apologize (in a kind of someone-else-messed-up kind of way) saying she put in the order for the salad first but didn't know why it didn't come out.

I was a little surprised because a woman at that same next table was extolling the virtues of Piola describing how someone she apparently knew there would train the pizza makers how to make the pies in what she called "the Piola way". I expected better service especially since they've been open for a while now.

I really liked the pizza and will probably return. This could have been a one-of-a-time (well, two-of-a-time, I guess) thing with those particular staff. We'll see. Piola's pizza was good but not so good that I'll keep going back if it happens again.

Looking for a couple of upscale, a couple of downscale or off-the-wall options in the Triangle

Yes, but what I want is *their* web site, not another site with info about them. Does it exist?
