Nithsches Butcher Shop - DTW

Currywurst (available everywhere in Germany but most popular in Berlin) is a curried pork sausage (mild to inferno) and curry Ketchup (same ranges). I ordered a currywurst sandwich from Nitsches for lunch today (on a bun which is not traditional) and curry ketchup. They have it in the deli and sell it as well. I prefer mine a bit hotter and with a cold pilsner but for Shelby it's pretty good. $2 ~ Sir Boagman prices. You have to call ahead or be willing to wait 20 mins.

Horseradish: I only know of it as a condiment. a)freshly grated on roast pork!!!! b) horsey + vinegar in a jar for wursts and porky things c) creamy like b and d) horsey mayo at Arbys. It loses its potency in a year so buy a new jar in the fall with the new crop check the expiration date to get the most recent jar.

P.S. Bought nuerenbergers and knackwurst for the weekend. Get some of those Portuguese rolls too. They are very good but with no preservatives have a finite life in the breadbox.

Sheboygans are the brat style Rainsux has been describing. In Wisconsin we call those Johnsonville and the Nuerenbers Sheboygans. One is coarsley ground and normally all pork were Nuerenbergers are more emulsion texture with veal and pronounced nutmeg and a cracklin'/shatterin' skin when grilled. Two meat tubes with the same name and different products altogether.

Off to get Neureburger and Sheboygans (brats) for the weekend and weiswursts for breakfast. It will be a Memorial Weeekend.

Zayeqa Farmington Hills MI [Detroit area]

Went today for a Mutton Qorma. What incredible spicing. The mutton is leg (some others are neck) so the bone issue was minimal (for you Sir Boagman).

The brown sauce was very soppable so you will probably need a second naan.

I don't know how they do it for $5.99-6.99 per serving but I'm happy they do it.

Jubba - East African - Wyandotte St. Windsor, ON ( a DTW suburb)

Went to Jubba last night with friends and two of us had the large goat curry and one had the small beef stew. Very clean and friendly place. $10 for large plate and $6 for small plate. I ended up having to get two take home boxes for the leftovers and I was stuffed from the main meal. Lots of student activity (good value and proximity to U Windsor).

I wouldn't call it spicy in a hot way but very flavorful. Goat was very tender and well done, rice was extraordinary and spiced very will and the salad was refreshing. The ranchy/cream dressing is improved with lemon-pepper and was just right.

Wyandotte street is much like Dequindre/John R in Madison Heights and there are literally hundreds of small restaurants where you want to try them all.

Well worth the drive/toll/customs from Detroit.

Mark's intention is right but on weekends they open at 12noon. Same strategy though. And if you are just one or two the bar is a good choice.

They have an airport PZQ and I am sure Rygwelski's would send a runner for a big order? I'll go in on fuel?????

Alternative to Caul Fat

When looking for leaf lard I discovered a butcher in Windsor, ON that stocks all things piggy. Bailey's meat market 2109 Ottawa st 519-252-6281 has frozen caul fat in 1.5 lb packages. I called them and they have some in stock (Fri April 13/2012). They are $1CDN per package! With the fuel, tolls it will only be about $15US per pound. Remember you need a passport or enhanced driver license to cross the border but frozen pig is allowed to come back to the US> Go for lunch, they have plenty of good East African in Windsor.

Had the wontons in spicy sauce (A02) at Trizest today and some extra rice to finish the sauce. Man, that's good stuff. Mae was there and remembered me from the party and the service was very friendly.

Best lamb/goat dishes dtw

Jamaica Jamaica it was for my goat curry fix before venturing to Windsor. Not quite the same experience as the old Erie in Canton, MI and subdued in flavor. Rice/beans and plantains; goat was very well cooked but missed something special. Friendly folks and pretty busy if you can get past the standard Detroit plexi windows/ lazy susan interface. I'm still deciding if this is a go to or just another one but the effort by the owners is refreshing.

Forest Grill--Birmingham, MI [DTW]

I was there last summer (2nd time) and with some very dear friends we had a total sampler that let the server go wild. Braised, charcuterie, veg surprises, a well cooked pork chop, no shellfilsh as one is allergic but otherwise the full gamut.

Both JanPrimus and I have been students of Polcyn at Schoolcraft and his hand is evident but the Exec Chef David Gilbert is present and en pointe. (He also came to the classes with Polcyn and this dude can cook). Still a destination resto for Friday shopping and then the Book Cadillac for Roast and the concert then gambling. Best of Detroit for sure. BTW the Townsend pillows are fantastic (yes, I only live 1.5 miles from there but still....).... tips for Rainsux...

BTW": they have a great patio with minor traffic if you like al fresco.

They open at 4pm weekdays FYI

DTW Lanna Thai Cuisine - Shelby Township - Northern Thai?

Double pot of pepper sauces was offered with the meal but they seemed to be as I have had at other Thai places if the dish was not spicy enough. My dish was just right so I didn't try them but "paste" wouldn't be my first description.

Take Five Bistro - Windsor, ON [DTW suburb]

Take Five Bistro has a very cool vibe to it. Wooden floors, dark colors, just right noise level, casual but chic dress, and Erie street ambiance. There is reasonable parking nearby (make sure to pay the ticket machine as the enforcers get commission on tickets). Obviously, you need Canadian coinage to pay the machine (just FYI). T5B is only 5 minutes from the tunnel and easy to find. If the customs agent hasn’t heard of it they must new. I came via Detroit.

It’s a chop and steakhouse with Ontario grade AAA beef/veal products hand cut on premises. You can choose the size of your cut as they have the whole piece. The meat quality at our table was truly prime steer/veal. Tenderloin tips in balsamic sauce with house made bread will happily get you going as an app as the party gets started.

My host had the cedar planked salmon roulade and he almost ate the plank and they won’t need to wash the plate it was so clean. Potatoes (an au gratin style) were special. His bride had the petite (6oz) filet with potatoes and veg and another clean plate. She is particular about medium rare and it was spot on.

I had the mustard crusted veal chop (16 oz). Many of the steak/chop dishes have a bleu cheese/mustard/glaze option and I should have known myself better. The veal (cooked very correctly) was so d**n tasty that the mustard + panko got in my way of devouring the thing (too salty overall with the mustard). There is nothing wrong with the menu options/choices; it was just not for me that day. I took the chop home and the next day after snacking it looked like the dog got after the bone it was that good. They offer a deconstructed Caesar salad that was tasty but I didn’t get the reason for the manipulation.

Overall not cheap but the service level (I mean when is the last time you saw white glove entrée delivery) knowledgeable and funny staff and meat quality rarely seen today it’s a good go for date night or special night out. I hear Friday’s and Saturday’s they have kangaroo (had it before and it’s very lean but fun) and prime rib as well.

I was a guest but it was about $40 CDN/pp without wine (+2 bottles Pelligrino), one shared starter and no coffee. They take credit cards. With Ontario 13% tax and tip included I would say it’s worth the border crossing and then some.

DTW Lanna Thai Cuisine - Shelby Township - Northern Thai?

I paid attention to your Northern references in the main post but maybe I got the big white guy menu. Only the standards on my menu. Well done but standards. Probably worth a call as the four women partners were very astute and attentive. As I was paying I told them I would be writing a review and they asked lots of questions. Just as in my review it its worth a go or even a suggestion for a "secret" menu.

Not exactly the same but in the Trizest party we too discovered the secret menu and had a terrific CH member gathering of many "off menu" items. You have my support.

DTW Lanna Thai Cuisine - Shelby Township - Northern Thai?

A very bright and clean new Thai in Shelby twsp. Lots of windows, very welcoming decor and people. Lunch is $8 and dinner $10 for the usual suspects (curry, fried riced, rice and noodle dishes).

I had ginger and rice soup (outstanding) and :Pad Thai. The Pad Thai was a good portion and had a citrus under note that was very pleasant. Overall a nice experience.

Check the map before you go as it is a bit difficult to see from the road (O'reilly auto parts bldg, N of 21 mile, east side) but definitely worth the trip.

Does anyone do good Chicken and Waffles DTW

Southern Fires in Detroit City does them but I wouldn't put the whole experience in the top 10. If you do go use the mandatory valet and go in the daylight.

DTW Shepherd Bakery - Warren

two were sampled in the drive home for quality reasons of course. Although that was in Troy which may have been illegal.
