Good for a group; near a TTC stop
Thanks Googs. Your thread was actually listed at the bottom in the related threads section. I am finding it very helpful. Have you been to The Queen's Pasta (QP Cafe) near Runnymeade by chance?
Good for a group; near a TTC stop
This place looks great but the menu cautions that entrees take 50 mins to prepare, so it's not going to suit for a "school night". Thanks for recommending though. I will be trying it another time.
Good for a group; near a TTC stop
Could we have been to the same book club, a meetup? I'm a member of two. My other book club meets here. It is a good space, but the menu is too pub-like unfortunately.
Good for a group; near a TTC stop
My book club is looking for a place to dine in Toronto. We are open to all kinds of cuisines but have a few basic requirements. This moths selection is South African, but where we dine does not have to tie to the book
1. Accepts reservations (for about 12-16)
2. Quiet enough on a Thursday about 7 pm for a group discussion; availability of a separate room a definite plus but not required
3. Moderate price, entrees about $13 to $23 (most are on a teacher salary) and an option to each pay separately
4. Close to a ttc subway station.
Thanks to all who offer suggestions. Cheers.
Favorite copycat recipe?
I think carrot is a main ingredient in the dressing I'm looking for too. Maybe I was too quick to claim "Eureka, I found it!"
I should follow your lead and find a local steakhouse here (I'm American but live in the Toronto area now) and see if they will sell it in bottles.
Favorite copycat recipe?
Found Benihana ginger dressing at Top Secret recipes. trying it today!
Favorite copycat recipe?
Great thread. So glad I stumbled upon it. Will check out cheddar biscuit thread and the Top Secret Recipes site asap. I have a Jiffy cornbread copy cat recipe to share (found it online). I mix all the dry ingredients and store it in the pantry, but it takes less than 3 mins to make!
I also did Applebee's brunch potato skins but they've been off the weekend brunch menu so long probably no one remembers them. Plus there is too much prep work; they are just not worth the effort.
I am looking for several good copycats if anyone can point me in the right direction.
1. Chic-fil-a chicken breasts (without a pressure cooker) and their coleslaw
2. 25 years ago Red Lobster add a great coleslaw too
3. any US chain Japanese steakhouse carrot and ginger dressing (I can't seem to find a copycat that gets the proportions right!)
YOU GOTTA GO TO BARQUE FOR BBQ!
Well said Buster. Coming from the mustard region of the eastern seaboard it is important to appreciate the underlying idea of BBQ - how it's cooked! Once you've got the process down everything else is personal preference and/or regional style.
Still hoping to stop in your place one day (I live west of the GTA) so you can slap my tastebuds silly!
New Streetsville Resto, Graydon
Thanks for the review, I'ma. Sounds like a great deal for $13, and those fresh fries might actually be something I'd enjoy (I'm not much of a fan). Can you comment on what else was on the menu?? My SO has to go to Sts'ville tomorrow...I might just tag along and suggest a lunch stop at Graydon.
Brampton finally has BBQ
Thanks for the head's up Duckdown. I can't believe I missed this post back in Feb or I would have definitely tried this place by now. It is on my agenda for this week, and I am looking forward to supporting another southern BBQ place.
Farmers' markets vs "farmers" markets
Looks great from the website, but a 40 minute ride on the 401, 400, AND 407 toll road is just as much of a deal breaker as heading downtown: too far to justify. Hopefully others reading this thread can take advantage of your recommendation though.
On another note. Back in South Carolina on the island where I lived you could buy a "share" or two of a local farmer's yield. Once a week for about 3 months you got a box of whatever was ready. Any places like that in the area?
Farmers' markets vs "farmers" markets
I suspect your right, but I LIVE in the burbs. Heading downtown for $15 worth of even good produce doesn't cut it for me. Thanks though.
New Streetsville Resto, Graydon
So true. Do you know if the French Bistro is still open or has it already gone too?
Farmers' markets vs "farmers" markets
I'll try Sherway and Etobicoke markets this weekend, but I will never go back to Square One. Easily 85% food terminal product last time I visited. What is the news on the Brampton market?
New Streetsville Resto, Graydon
It is located at 235 Queen St (where Marcellos just to be) between Streetsville Tire and Pita Nutsy. Anyone heard about it or dined there yet? I noticed it opened about a week or so ago, but I can find nothing on Chow and no apparent web presence.

Glass jar rubber gaskets source in the GTA
Thanks to both of you. I will check out Golda's next time I'm in that area of Mississauga.
Glass jar rubber gaskets source in the GTA
I have several "Le Parfait" style glass jars with disintegrating rubber gaskets (in 2 different sizes). I've looked online but would prefer to find a local source, and if it happened to be in Mississauga or western GTA all the better. Any leads would be appreciated.
Good restaurant near Pearson?
I don't have any recs, but I look forward to responses (and this response puts your thread into My Chow) because I live and work in the area.
Late lunch this Thursday in Etobicoke
I'm looking for a recommendation for meeting a friend for lunch.
It has to be someplace that is open and serving around 2:30 or so on a weekday.
My preference is for something small, not too upscale, quiet (which shouldn't be a problem around that time) and not a chain. A bakery/bistro kinda place would be great. Hoping for the option to have a glass of wine too, but that's not critical.
My friend will be heading from there to the subway so something near a metro stop would also be great, but I can drop her off if we end up a bit further away. Thanks.
where can I buy good stone ground grits?
Glad to see Adluh mentioned here. My mom used to buy them there and said she felt like she was buying crack (ok she probably said "illegal drugs" lol) because you had to go inside to pay and then drive around back and some guy brings the bags to your car. It's good to know they have changed the system and have bags available in the office. And two thumbs up for Four Oaks Farm. I haven't had their grits, but they have many delicious items, including their chicken salad!
While in Charleston, SC where do you recommend
I second Rosebank Farms and offer the Stono Market for casual lunch (Stono also has food to go) Wild Olive also Johns Island is a good dinner option. I'm also a big fan of the Fat Hen on JI. Downtown, Hominy Grill is a must for me for breakfast or lunch. I'm also very impressed with the offerings at Cru Cafe. I also like Basil and La Fourchette on Upper King St, but they don't do southern...the first is Thai and the second is French.
I've eaten at all the restaurants mentioned thus far except for two: Charleston Place and Husk. Chances are very low that you will encounter a bad meal at any of them. So, check out the menus, wonder by on foot (for the downtown locales) and choose what sounds good to you.

The "What's good in Peel" thread.. (BRAMPTON/MISSISSAUGA Only please) :^)
He told us about the size on our last visit. Will definitely give one a go next time we're in! Thanks for recommending.
The "What's good in Peel" thread.. (BRAMPTON/MISSISSAUGA Only please) :^)
Thanks for recommendation Burlgurl. We tried it today (and actually were the only customers in the place). I had the Nova Scotia clam chowder and Louisiana catfish with dirty rice. The SO had the scallops and andouille appetizer followed by the catfish with sweet potato fries. It was very tasty and we will definitely be back for free oyster nights on Thursdays!

Wow, I wish I hadn't missed out on Big Daddy's. Any other good places to eat oysters in Mississauga?

Yes, that's the name. I thought it was pretty good, but that's coming from a Budweiser girl.
Oysters/Bars/Questions about NYE in Charleston
Hominy claims to only close on thanksgiving day and Christmas day. They open for breakfast on weekends at 9. If you plan to go on NYD, I would definitely go early and plan for a wait of about an hour, but it's SO worth it. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits or the heuvos rancheros (request sour cream). Their biscuits and gravy are awesome as well. I haven't been to Amen Street (it looks very interesting), but I'm very fond of Pearlz downtown location. The oysters are always great.
Enjoy.
Real BBQ in Etobicoke
I have been twice recently and about 5 times total. The first time I was the only customer (weekday around 1:30). I had the pulled pork sandwich. It was a lot spicier than the last time I was in. And, the meat was piled so high on the sandwich I had to pull some off (and eat it with a fork) before I could bite into my sandwich. Though hot, it was delicious and smoky with lots of end pieces.
On my second recent visit with my SO, we found all the tables full and were warned about a brief wait for service. He had the pulled pork, piled high again and I tried the meatloaf for the first time. I loved it. It was smoky, full of flavor, and not at all dry. They were out of coleslaw which my guy wanted for his sandwich; he had the beans instead which he said were "fine". I had the potato salad both times. It is nothing special but I really like it and we don't ever eat potato of any kind at home. We also had some good bottled beer brewed in Oakville. I don't remember the name, but we had the Auburn, one of three varieties they serve. A great complement to the meal.
Mississauga
We were headed to Sunny's yesterday only to find out they have closed and an Indian joint is going to be opening there soon. So, now we are looking for a good breakfast joint in the Eastgate Parkway and Dixie area. We don't want to go anywhere that has a line or a long wait on weekends.
