"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll

Green peppers, yuck! And I don't like fennel either.

Chicken and Waffles in DC

They serve brunch all day on Sunday. I found that out one time by accident when I booked a reservation for Sunday evening. they do serve more savory things around dinner.

Chicken and Waffles in DC

I've had birch and barley's and they were indeed very very good. They had excellent fried chicken, very flavorful.

Founding Farmer's would be a distant second for me.

Menomale-a preview

First off a disclose, I was invited to the "friends and family" preview because I know the owner.

Menomale is a new Neapolitan pizzeria in the Brookland/Rhode island avenue neighborhood. The first thing you see when you walk in the door is their huge brick oven that can cook a pizza in less than a minute and two pizzaolos making pizza. You round the corner to see a small cozy restaurant and bar. The bartender is a self professed "beer nerd" and serves all kinds of unusual brews such as Japanese wit beer, florin sours. They also plan to serve wine and mixed drinks but they haven't gotten all the t 's crossed and i's dotted on the liquor licence.

For dinner we sampled their margarita pizza which is a great exercise in simplicity- a dough made from bread, salt, water and air, sauce made from marzano tomatoes and salt, topped with a restrained amount of buffalo mozzarella, basil and (at my behest) a sprinkling of Parmesan and chopped garlic. When the restaurant opens they will have more topping options including different cheese (after I had sung the praises of ricotta on pizza), vegetables and smoked meats. Since one of the owners is vegan they also had a pretty decent vegan cheese option. My one complaint is that they might want to hold off on the sauce a little so the pizza is less soggy. The flavors were delcious, the crust was chewy, sauce was sweet but not overly so and the garlic added a great bit.

Besides pizza the Menomale plans to serve salads, calzones, brick oven sandwich and deserts. They are working on the final details as well as getting a liquor licence so they hope to be open within a month.

Girl Scouts Hit DC Need Good Places at Good Prices to Eat Suppers

Hill country could work, they price everything ala carte so you buy all your meats and sides at the counter. The portions are very big so plan to share if you want to save money

Girl Scouts Hit DC Need Good Places at Good Prices to Eat Suppers

You will want to get reservations for founding farmers. Like now.

Coming to DC April 6th weekend, need recs

Sounds like you had a good trip. Big hunt really is a fun bar, I need to go back there

Coming to DC April 6th weekend, need recs

Fyi birch and barley has a good brunch.

One of my favorite bars in dc is fruit bat on h street but its hard to get to unless you take a cab or drive

Off the Grid DC Restaruants

Mandalay in silver spring for burmese food. Order a salad, they are fanatstic. Also not on the tourist radar would be honey pig in anandale.

my "slightly off the beaten path" meal report

It was out of character for me to skip the salted caramel since I loved salted caramel everything but I was in the mood for fruity treats

Weekend in DC-help me choose

Birch and Barley is very good. They have an all day brunch with some savory items on Sundays and their fried chicken with waffles is out of this world. The flatbreads are also good.

If your mom has a sweet tooth try Pitango gelato or one of DC's umpteenth frozen yourgurt/cupcake joints. Also Spike's good stuff eatery for toasted marshmallow milkshake.

my "slightly off the beaten path" meal report

My husband and I visited some friends who have temporarily relocated to new Orleans for work and they gave me some great restaurant recommendations. We never made it to galatoires or Commander's palace but we still ate wonderful things.

Day 1
Brunch at Eats- I wanted to order half the menu because everything seemed so good but I settled for Eggs cochon which was poached eggs with hollandaise over mustard greens and a pulled pork. We also got banana fritters which were fried to perfection. Friends had red velvet pancakes, husband had a pepper jack and avocado omelet.

Snack
I spied Meldown's menu as we were walking home from the Quarter and we had to stop and have a Popsicle. Pineapple and cilantro? Yes please!

Dinner- I turned my friends onto the Green Goddess because I've been reading Chef Chris's blog off and on for years. They were excited to try someplace new! I ordered the wild mushroom bread pudding with the addictive blue cheese sauce. Husband had oyster absinthe soup with a wedge salad. My friend's freaky tabouli salad was a highlight as well as the post dinner prosciutto wrapped figs. We all had to order our own bacon sundaes. DAMN....

Drinks- We randomly ran into Glenn David Andrews and he invited us to Mayfeilds to watch him play. I foolishly ordered just a rum and coke because I was worried about feeling tired (as if I could fall asleep watching that man play) My husband had an uptown Collins that was very very good.

Day 2

Lunch
Gazebo Cafe Slept in and decided on skipping brunch in favor of eating lunch since I wanted to try po boys. I had a moment of buyer's remorse in ordering a sausage poy boy since I don't really like eating sea food (textural issues...except that apparently fried seafood doesn't freak me out as much) the poor sandwich was just sausage and bread, with some lonely mayo packets but once I dressed it up with tomatoes and mayo it was very good, the sausages were very flavorful. I heard that a better place would have offered creole mustard. hMph. Husband had a fried shrimp/oyster po boy. I had the a famed ice cream daiquiri called the nutty Irishman, and it was dangerously delicious drink since you can't really taste the alcohol.

Snack
We had to try Meltdown again and this time husband got a grapefruit and lavender Popsicle which he loved, and I got a chili mango which was okay but not great. I regret not getting a chocolate sea salt one.

Dinner
Since the Joint was closed and we had to drive a friend uptown for a catholic seder we ended up at Juan's flying burrito. This is the kind of thing I probably would not have gone to without my friend vouching for it but the burritos were excellent. I got one with pulled pork and pineapple salsa, delicious. Their chorizo queso dip grows on you. My friend got a luau quesadilla with shrimp, bacon and pineapple and my husband got the flying burrito.

Day 3

Breakfast
We finally tried Cafe DuMonde. it was a 15 minute wait to get in, a 10 minute wait to get a waitress over to serve us and about a 5 minute wait for our food and it was worth every second. Perfectly brewed coffee with perfectly cooked beignet.

Lunch
After several non-starters we finally make it over to the Joint. The meats were very good, smoked perfectly and the sauces complimented the meal perfectly. The sides were a little disapointing, the potato salad tasted unbalanced (too eggy) and the coleslaw needed more dressing. The mac and cheese was okay and the baked beans were very good and clearly not from a can.

Snack
Strawberry lemon zest popsicles from Meltdown because they were out of the strawberry basil. Yum!

Dinner
It was raining buckets but we braved the storm to walk over to the Marigny brasserie. I had the best cocktail of the trip, a Pimms Cup that was so refreshing. Since it was my last night in NOLA and I still hadn't had red beans and rice I ordered their fried chicken My dinner was slightly disappointing, the beans and rice were very boring and I've probably cooked better at home. The fried chicken was very good and portions were huge. My friend will be enjoying the leftovers. They ordered pizzas and my husband ordered Blackened Redfish with a Creole Crawfish Cream Sauce.

Drinks
We went to the Muse for deserts. Their strawberry icebox pie was excellent as was the Muse drink (a martini type drink with strawberry and cucumber.) husband loved his dirty martini with house made brine.

Day 4
I made breakfast for our hosts as a final thank you.

Lunch
We went to Mia's Balcony. My last drink was a gin fizz which I wasn't crazy about so my friend traded me his St. Charleston. I wouldn't normally drink a whiskys but it was a perfect drink for the last meal. and I had this amazing roast beef po boy with debris and blue cheese. It was so filling I couldn't eat another bite that day as we bid farewell to new Orleans and flew back home.

Dining early May while conferencing

I had birch and barley a few weeks ago for my husband's birthday and it was fantastic! Husband tried several 4 oz pours. The flatbead pizzas were very good and I ordered chicken and waffles (which might be a Sundays only treat) that were out of this world.

Eating out with 13 year old cousin

will try that. thanks!

Eating out with 13 year old cousin

I've eaten at FF twice and while i think their corporate approach to farm to table is probably exaggerated their food is tasty and there's lots of things that I think he would like.

Eating out with 13 year old cousin

My husband's young cousin is in town for a school field trip. We are going to try and have dinner with him during his jam packed schedule and were looking for something that's nicer than golden corral/buffet hell but friendly to the palate of the thirteen year old boy (he's probably a more adventurous eater than most since his mom is a total health nut and so he eats a variety of healthy veggies, fruits and grains at home), ie someplace that is nice but not too intimidating. I would love to go to founding farmers but I don't think that will work for his itinerary based on when I could get reservations on OpenTable.

Something in Foggy bottom/Farragut would be ideal but I'll take suggestions from other neighborhoods.

ISO: Best Ramen in DC/VA/MD area?

I need to give Toki a try because I love Kimchi Ramen! I had some in Korea and it totally changed my mind about ramen soup.

2 Nights in DC

dino is one of my favorites!

If you are in need of a great neighborhood bar I'd recomend the fruitbat. It's on H street and has great infusions and creative mixed drinks.

Suggestions for Sunday Dinner in D.C.

I've eaten at Brasserie Beck and it's delicious, the frites were especially a highlight.

Fresh Figs

I've gotten them at Wegmans, both the one in Fairfax and Lanham.

Washington, D.C. restaurants with kids?

Matchbox is also a good option, they have pretty good pizza, and miniburgers

Advice for making Bo Ssam (Aka Korean pork shoulder)

Yeah I need to make this dish again, it was so flavorful and the family style service meant that everyone could alter the dish to their tastes. so that the less adventurous eaters did not have the kimchi, or could try and experiment with different sauces.

What worked for me was cooking the whole thing in advance but then reheating it in the oven and then putting it up to 500 to crisp the skin. YUM!

I might have a get together with friends and make that and make some kind of vegetarian dish (maybe kimchi quessadillas) for my non meat eating friends.

Self Cater Wedding Menu

I'd agree that's a big menu and your motto should probably keep it simple. Given the time of day you are serving the foodYou could probably get away with just serving cake, cookies and punch if you wanted to, or just light hors deserves.

That said, I can understand that you would want your special day and eat well too.I'd echo what others said and cut down a dish or two or three.

Also are you a member of some kind of big scale store like costco or sam's club? This kind of situation almost begs you to have a membership so you can buy things in bulk.

I know you weren't specifically asking for a starchy salad recipe but this one is great: Roasted Potato Salad, it has a mustard vinegar based dressing. http://www.grubreport.com/kissthecook/roastpotsal.html. It's delicious and pretty simple to make for a crowd, (well you'd have to roast the potatoes in batches)

Vegan Valentine's Day

mine three. For the past couple of years My husband make some decadent and yummy appetizers, put on some duke Ellington and sit in front of the fireplace. It's a pretty nice tradition.

restaurant recs for fairfax

I will be meeting a friend and his parents for dinner this week before his movie premiere for an indie movie he starred in. My friend has very simple tastes, a real meat and potatoes man. I was leaning towards cheecake factory but does antone have recs for an alternative that isn't a chain?

How is this list for DC Trip

For Silver Spring, you might want to consider Mandalay http://mandalayrestaurantcafe.com/ for Burmese especially if you like spicy food (don't worry, you can always change your order to mild or medium but they don't skimp on the spice when you ask for it hot!). Their salads are amazing.

Restaurants & Bars Featured in HBO's The Wire

Wasn't there some hot dog joint where Bunny Colvin and deacon ate lunch? I remember they were debating the proper hot dog toppings.

Indian Food in Montgomery County

My favorite Indian restaurant is Tiffin in north of Takoma. Here's the website (warning, music) http://www.tiffinrestaurant.com/ Only thing is that I don't think they have a private dining room.

Paneer Cheese

If you are in the mood for a road trip, you could also head up to maryland, next door to Tiffin (1341 University Boulevard East Takoma Park, MD 20912-7445 (301) 434-9200) is a small indian food grocery store that sells paneer.

Dried strawberries

I am pretty sure you can buy them at Trader Joes
