Yucca de Lac coming to Stanford?
then again, this sounds like someone bought the name and not necessarily retained the spirit of the original restaurant. it is in the stanford shopping mall, after all.
Sun Hong Kong - Berkeley
Is this restaurant related to the sun hk that was in downtown a few years ago?
Need suggestions for a last minute long weekend in SF
Lers Ros in the tenderloin. Great thai.
Tomales Bay Oyster Co
if you are going in the weekend, don't go too late on a good weather days, because there are going to be crowds and there is a limited number of tables. alternatively you can take the oysters and head for the nearby statepark if you don't want to worry about tables..
bring oyster knives, and bbq stuff if you plan to grill. they sell them also if you don't have them.
i used to go there more often. not sure if its because of the popularity, they have become significantly more expensively/ crowded over the years. i remember the good old days from about 8, 9 years ago when a 50 bag of extra smalls only cost around $20. not any more! now the reason to go is for freshness and the experience, but not necessarily for the price.
Looking for pickled herring
Anyone knows the source of Ikea's herring? have been eating these but got a bit uneasy reading about the PCBs and dioxins from Russia's coastal cities in baltic herrings, though baltic herrings are presumably not sold outside Sweden by EU law.
Where can I buy bulks fresh herbs?
i grow all of these at home. you can get them in pots at a plant nursery. if you don't want to bother with growing, you can buy big size rosemary and lavender at nurseries that are a lot cheaper than the grocery store and just use them in your bouquets right away. or you can plant them as Carrie mentioned and they will grow in a few months.
i agree about basil, plant them in the spring and you will have a good size plant by July. Basil leaves get dark and oxidized fairly quickly though after cutting.
not sure about sage and thyme. aren't they fairly small in size even when mature? or you want mostly the smell?
in reality, rosemary and lavender are everywhere in the streets. if you find them where cutting is ok and they are big enough, you can cut some without noticeably reducing the plants size. after all, these are weeds in the Mediterranean.
there are also some lavender farms in Kenwood/ Sonoma. you can likely work out a deal with them. I've been to one that has a public opening date in July and you can cut lavender flowers (grosso and provence, i recall) and they charge you dependent on how much you cut. and there is a winery that has a lavender garden.
Tasty Rice plates at New Woey Loy Goey
I remember this place! I used to work 3 blocks away and came here often for lunch. Satisfying, cheap and fast.
Dining at Home with a Private Top Level Chef. Thoughts?
I think at the same price point, one may not get the same level of food compared to in the restaurants, because the operation will have to build into the price all the one-time logistics overhead like getting ingredients just for the night, transportation, hauling stuff, etc.
i also imagine that if its a very well known chef, getting the chef out of his/her own restaurant to take care of one private party for the night will mean that the price per head may be much higher than that in the restaurant.
consistency can be a problem because of the variation of cooking equipments in people's home, assuming those equipment are there in the first place.
and then someone's has to clean up- don't think the chef is going to do it.
Foodie from Chicago needs to know what SFO Neighborhood to live in.
one more thing to consider- Caltrain doesn't have grade separation. if there is an accident/ fatality on track, there will be delays for hours. happens a few times per year
Foodie from Chicago needs to know what SFO Neighborhood to live in.
SF and Menlo Park are about 25-30 miles apart. you'll have to make sure you are ok with the commute day after day. traffic on 101 during rush hour is not good. taking caltrain is less stress, but it may still take some time to go from door to door dependent on where you live and work. you will have to accept that you will spend 2-3 hours each day commuting.
Or you can live in Menlo Park, and drive to the city when you feel like eating out. but you will probably not go to SF as often.
"Old Man Cakes" (Lao Gong Bing) at Wonder Food Bakery, Oakland Chinatown
I tried this from wonder and Napoleon today. Indeed the wonder version is better. The ingredient taste fits together in a more harmonic way.
$0.30 if you buy one. So it's also cheap.
Clay Pot Rice and Double Boiled Soup at Best Taste in Oakland
Indeed they do. Tried the eel clay pot rice and the pork rib preserved meat clay pot rice. They are both great for the chilly weather. I like the eel version better because the flavor is pretty nuanced. The misses like the rib one better.
For the soup, today's is coconut chicken soup. I like it. And it's quite nice @1.99. Tho would love if they offer choices of container sizes at a different price so I can slurp multiple bowls.
Thanks for the recommendation.
Clay Pot Rice and Double Boiled Soup at Best Taste in Oakland
Do they serve soup and clay pot rice during lunch?
Restaurant Mitsunobu in Menlo Park
this is serious praise indeed. what is the source?
Banh Mi Thit Nuong at Thanh Huong Sandwich (Senter Road, San Jose)
how does Thanh Huong compared to Huong Lan down the street on Tully?
SF Michelin Stars 2012
interesting development that Baume got the second star before Chez TJ. Chef Chemel left Chez TJ when the owner wrote him off for getting the second star. Maybe that's what drove Chemel.
Kabocha (very) near Palo Alto?
i got mine at the Sunnyvale farmer's market, at either the Happy Boy's or the Pinnacle stalls.
Both stalls also sell in the Palo Alto california avenue farmer's market on sundays.
Black watermelons at Raley's $2.98 - Amazing find (I think)
mine is kinda watery. the texture is interesting. the middle is almost persimmon-ny.
Good Sources of Great Stone Fruit, Especially SF/Peninsula?
i finally tried Frog Hollow. I sampled some plums at the stall and just had to buy some of them. both the plums and the asian pears are excellent. fragrant, and sweet.
Santa Clara/Sunnyvale/mountain view recs - good stuff at low prices
never mind. You were part of those discussions.

Lobsters at 99 Ranch ...... $7.99/lb
In the cupertino store yesterday:
$8.99/lb small ones
$10.99/lb big ones
Moving to FiDi
Commuting back to the city during rush hour is a pain indeed. I remember Robert has a thread a while back that discussed dining options for evening dining options along the commute route from the south bay. that may be just useful for you in case its getting late. I can't find the thread though.
For Toshi sushi fans (Kaygetsu): last chance to have his sushi ever before he retires in October

Mexico City restaurant that isn't Pujol
great to hear about Azul. couldn't find the time to go to UNAM last time i was there.
this new location is much more convenient.
Santa Clara/Sunnyvale/mountain view recs - good stuff at low prices
If you like Dish n Dash, you should try Dish Dash. that's the original restaurant in downtown Sunnyvale.
Santa Clara/Sunnyvale/mountain view recs - good stuff at low prices
Dittmer's at San Antonio is temporarily closed. they are reopening a few blocks further south in Sept.
Santa Clara/Sunnyvale/mountain view recs - good stuff at low prices
Indian- there are so many good places and they are all very reasonably priced. Good choices of food from every region of India. Probably the most choices anywhere outside India itself.
I like northern Indian/ Pakistani, so I like Kabob and Curry in Santa Clara.
Any recs for Hayward/Newark/Union City areas?
Yum's Bistro- great cantonese food at a moderate price point. the place is run by a chef who used to be the head chefs at top restaurants. hounds have had chowdown there before.
And its right next to Newark and Union City.
