didn't mean to play jeopardy. yes, it helps greatly. michael is a little closer than carlos so either one will be okay since we'll be driving. thanks also for the mexican recs. sometimes its very difficult getting a feel for what people are really saying when they offer opinions on restaurant meals. you just make an educated guess based on a majority of what's said. but its very helpful to be able to follow someone's previous posts to get an idea of their tastes, both likes and not. you've been very helpful. thx

thanks for both very informative posts. i will be in chicago celebrating an anniversary. as of now going to spiaggia, hopefully for a white truffle dinner, L20 for a carte menu(have already had their 12 course tasting menu), avenues, alinea- i know about the chef connection, but think of it as a progressive dinner combination, and for sunday night was thinking of carlos. not many choices on sunday . mk, cafe des architectes. have been to mk several times and thought i'd go to cda for lunch. other than the dinner plans, thought we'd try sol de mexico, xoco, topolobampo(good mexican food is hard to find) spacco napoli and floriole bakery for lunch. love to fit in a good thai place. don't know if micheals' is open sunday, have to check into that. will also look into your other suggestions, thanks again very much

What's the best bakery in Chicago for sweets?

stumbled upon floriole when my wife and daughter brought back some tasty treats and flavorful chewy baggets(sic). subsequently had a special order prepared consisting of several breads, selection of cookies, whole lemon verbana pound cake, lemon tart with marange ? topping and a fruit clafotti- its late and my spelling sucks. everything was how shall i say it, all mine, i paid for it and should therefore decide who gets what and how much. unfortunately it was almost all consumed at a dinner party for 8 or 9 friends. the cookies and small finger pastries were eaten during the afternoon prep and cooking, by yours truly in association with my 2 trusty assistants. what was left over were the remains of a 3 foot long lemon pound cake. i drew the line at the last 8 inches. no one and i mean no one was going to sneak, pick or in any do anything other than smell the wonderful lemon aroma that eminated from this little piece of heaven. i threatened my wife with impending divorce if she so much as looked at this tender morsel with anything that remotely resembled even a twitch of lust-this after she sent everyone home with little packages of my pastry remains. talk about depression. i secreted away the pound cake in the wine cellar. and everyday for the next four days no matter how bad or dreary the day, i had a huge smile on my despicably selfish face

perbacco

sorry about the long delay. i am a bonehead sometimes. went to dinner at perbacco with 9 other guests(since i was paying). sat at the long table by the kitchen. everything we ate from antipasto to dessert was excellent. we had our own waiter for the duration. the breadsticks and bread were outstanding. we obviously tried a large variety of small and large dishes. seafood and meats stood out. sorry memories a little fuzzy. bar and wine selection was very good. dessert and coffee, followed by lemoncello and for my crazy sons grappa capped off the night. i vaguely remember thinking we picked up a total stranger who joined us to round out the evening. would do it again in a ny second.

An amazing night at Eleven Madison Park

i have been trying to find a pear in a bottle as an after dinner drink, aperitif or eau de vie for for a nurse friend for six years (i really don't lead a sheltered life). after reading your outstanding review, i called emp and spoke to the hostess who also sounded oustanding. she happily and graciously took my cell phone number, spoke with the bar manager and called back within 2 hours with a distributor and retailer. my nurse friend will forever be in my debt. thanks seal for helping me become hercules poirot(sic)

new bakery on webster, need the name and address

family just returned from a weekend in chicago. i stayed home to work.... lucky me. they brought back some pastries and bagettes from a new bakery on webster in lincoln park. thought i was back in paris. the croissant was absolutely deliciously flacky in your typical puff pastry way with a hint of what i thought was cognac, brandy or some liqueur. other pastries were also light , flacky and delectable. the bagette was a little heavy ,doughwise, but nice and crunchy and very flavorful. this bakery could make me move to the windy city. however , don't know the name or location. please help.

Spiaggia...never again

went to spiaggia last year, party of four. have been there a number of times. great food. could not agree more about the wine prices. this occasion i brought two bottles of wine from home. both were $125 retail. corkage fee was $75 each. which i thought under the circumstances was reasonable for spiaggia.

R & R in toronto

will be visiting toronto for 3-4 days(4-5 nights), before going to montreal and nyc. i would really appreciate some restaurant advice. wife and i are particularly interested in ethnic as well as high end restaurants. time is short, so we will happily sacrifice for exceptional lunches and dinners as necessary. please only standout restaurants with great food. the emphasis is the food, decor/atmosphere simple or formal. there are no palate restrictions just food glorious food. cost is not factor. thx from ohio.

good food in cambria?

will be travelling from la to sf, stopping in santa barbara for mexican food on milpas and spending the night in cambria.

any lodging or restaurant suggestions in cambria?there seems to be two or three places people frequented a year or so ago. how are they doing? anything new? how about breakfast in cambria? no better way to start a day than with a breakfast to remember by the pacific ocean.

on to carmel for the day before leaving for sf. any restaurants of late that strike peoples fancy. looking forward to the drive!
