Pupusas near Portland, OR?

I read here somewhere that Gloria's Secret in Beaverton was the joint for pupusas. Also read about Sabor Salvadoreno. Anyone eaten at both Gloria's and Sabor Salvadoreno who can give me a comparison between the two? Pros? Cons?

Tofu-fans, I need your help!

I found a recipe that might fit in well with your watermelon/feta/mint salad and it sounds like it would make a pretty presentation, as well, though I've never tried it myself: http://www.protein.com/soyproteinrecipes/recipes/stuffedpeppers.jsp

Good luck!

Tofu-fans, I need your help!

Unlike a steak, tofu generally doesn't stand on it's own. It is usually part of a stir-fry or something like that, though you might try a stuffed tofu, deep-fried, with a dipping sauce. That's the only way that I've ever had tofu as a direct substitute for a piece of meat like pork chops or steak.

Tofu and potatoes, though, don't seem like they go together to me at all. You may want to reconsider your meat substitute. Perhaps you might try a recipe that calls for tempeh or another vegetable protien. Let me see what I can find...

groceries and cheap (meaning *cheap*) eats in hayes valley/lower haight?

If you actually want to get good pizza in the LH, I recommend ordering delivery from Deja Vu on 16th near Dolores 415.255.1600. Their website is, for some reason, currently unavailable. They're open pretty late - midnight, I think.

Wheat Berries?

One of my favorite things to eat for breakfast as a kid was a mixed-berry yogurt with wheat berries mixed in. I loved the texture!

Mexican Food Hell.

I am so SO sorry that anyone sent you to Dos Amigos. I used to live in Portland and it's truly, really terrible. That said, I always went to get El Salvadorean food for my fix, even though it's not exactly the same, at Tu Casa. Go there next time. I promise it'll be better, you poor thing.

Mexican Food Hell.

I have complete and total sympathy for you. I great up in Washington, where there is plenty of great Meixcan food, then moved to Maine and thought my Mexican-food-life was over.

The only good Mexican food I have had in New England was actually in Boston near Fenway: El Pelon Taqueria, 92 Peterborough Street, Boston, MA 02111
(617) 262-9090.

My favorite wasn't even Mexican, but really did the trick: Tu Casa Salvadorena Restaurant, 70 Washington Ave,
Portland, ME 04101 (207) 828-4971.

Good luck!!!

I'm kind of surprised that I haven't seen Mythic Pizza on this list yet. The pizza's not phenomenal, but hey, they've got 2$ cheese slices. When I first moved to Hayes Valley, I was so broke I was eating a 2$ slice of cheese nearly every night for dinner!

Where to go in Portland, Maine...Dinner & Breakfast?

I've had a number of great and interesting breakfasts at The Blue Spoon on Munjoy Hill in Portland.

Gritty's is a great place for lunch if you're going to be in the Old Port: http://www.grittys.com/ptld.html

Maine Italian Sand. in SF?

Have you ever tried the Lobster Shack in North Beach? I went in there once because I was curious and they've got the place covered in maps of the Maine coast. Kinda felt like home.

Didn't try the Lobster Rolls, though. We had just come from the pizza joint. Keep meaning to go back, though.

Maine Italian Sand. in SF?

Yeah, it's all about the roll, really! And the oil-cured olives... And the sour pickles.

Guess I'm going to have to make a trip back to Maine! I might as well be asking for a Whoopie Pie!

Tonight, no reservations, where can I go?

Sometimes, but very rarely, you can get reservations at Quince if you call early enough in the morning. It's not likely, but definitely worth a try: http://www.quincerestaurant.com/pages/home_main.html

Maine Italian Sand. in SF?

Thank you! Their website looks good. I will give this a try.

Maine Italian Sand. in SF?

Scott is correct. Here is the best article I've found about Maine Italians: http://travel.mainetoday.com/fromaway/060405.shtml?total=131&next=20

I used to live two blocks from DiPietro's and I think I ate there at least three times a week, either for the olive pizza (oil cured black whole black olives - SALTY!) or for a "veggie Italian." (Italian without the ham.)

Want to make the most of my trip to ME...

While you're in Portland, ME:
Drink the local beer at Gritty's - While you're there have a Reuben.
DiPietro's has a better Maine Italian than Amatto's so be sure to make your way up there if you're going to get one of those.

And if you find yourself in South Berwick, GO TO PEPPERLAND CAFE'!
Here's a little bit about them: http://www.tasteoftheseacoast.com/content/view/60/14/

I sure miss Maine! Have a great trip!

Maine Italian Sand. in SF?

I am just wondering if it's possible to get a Maine Italian in San Francisco. I'm sorry, the Yellow Submarine is good and AK Subs rules...but it's just not a *Maine* Italian.

Any ideas?
