Where to stay within walking distance to restaurants?
Hello,
Visiting next weekend with a friend, and we would prefer to avoid car rental. We're both avid foodies, so we want to stay somewhere within walking distance to excellent foods. I'll review older posts for restaurant selections, but can anyone suggest a part of town to begin my hotel search? Is it ALL on Bourbon St.? ;)
Thanks all,
Erin

Sweet spot near Highline Ballroom?
Hi Chowhounders,
I'll be visiting my favorite city this weekend, and while I have our Saturday night dinner booked (SHO), I'm looking for a unique spot somewhere in the Village for Friday night (we're going to the Highline Ballroom later). There will be 3 of us, looking for per person costs of $60 or less, including booze (of which there will probably be a fair amount). We're big on ambiance, so no bright lights (or dominant music), and we'll have a lot of catching up to do, so don't want to feel rushed. Otherwise, we're adventurous eaters, and anything goes. Any advice? Thanks in advance!
Best,
Erin
need sirloin tip roast...um, tips.
Thanks for the help- I'll try the slow-roasted approach, and just make the sauce separately. Happy New Year!
need sirloin tip roast...um, tips.
Hi all,
I have a 3.2 lb beef sirloin tip roast that I've been charged with preparing for a NYE celebration of 8 foodies and wine lovers. I've searched this board, and many others, and just haven't found the right recipe or an overview of the cut. Here's what I'm thinking- any advice would be MOST appreciated!
Marinate overnight in a standard soy or balsamic marinade (garlic, oil, spices, etc). Sear all sides in an ovenproof skillet, and place in a low oven (275, maybe?) with a 1/2 cup of my super-rich beef stock, another 1/2 cup of port or sherry, and a large handful of chopped cherries. Leave it alone until rare, let it rest, slice it and serve with the cherry sauce (which may have to be reduced?). A nice deep cab to accompany, perhaps?
Am I stepping on any land mines with this? From what I can tell, the cut isn't the tenderest- would braising be better? Am I already braising, a little, with all the liquid? Should I turn the roast halfway through? I'm a little paranoid about ruining the main course...
Thanks!
Stewing liver and shank together?
Thanks guys! I've left the liver frozen. Shank stew it is! Stay warm...
Stewing liver and shank together?
Hi Chowhounders,
I'm planning to make a phenomenal beef stew in preparation for an unusual winter snow in Virginia. But when I raided my meat freezer for the beef shank and stew beef packages I just knew I had, it turns out the stew beef was actually beef liver. So I've got shank and liver. I've read up on recipes for liver stew, but it's a very different process than stewed beef meat. Any tips for combining the two? Are the cooking times/temps different? My family is a little liver-phobic, so it would be great if I could hide the liver in seamlessly!
Thanks for your help!

Restaurants near The Homestead?
Thanks so much for your reply- we'll definitely check out the Water Wheel.
I'm terribly sorry to hear about your wife. I hope you are finding peace.
Restaurants near The Homestead?
Hi Chowhounders,
Hoping that this is the right board... Planning a girls' weekend at The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA, and I'm looking for dining options off the compound. Anyone explored this area? Know of any local gems?
Thanks!

Homemade Potato Chips: to soak or not to soak?
Thanks for your help everyone! I had a frustrating experience with the chips- first, I used a waffle cut, which might have further complicated things. I soaked for about 45 minutes or so, changing the water several times, then completely dried the chips before attempting to fry them on the stove. We ended up purchasing a fry daddy, which definitely helped, but there was such a fine line between crisp and burned that I ended up using about half of the chips I made. Live and learn, I suppose, but I'm not sure exactly what I learned. Next time, if there is a next time, I'll not use the waffle slice, and perhaps fry at a lower temp?
Homemade Potato Chips: to soak or not to soak?
Thanks, guys! I've seen several recipes that call for soaking up to 2 hours (the Joy of Cooking recommends this)... I suppose this makes the chips even crispier?
Homemade Potato Chips: to soak or not to soak?
Hi Chowhounders,
I'm frying up some potato chips for a crowd, and wondering whether to soak the potatoes before frying? Some recipes say yes, some say no. I'm using Russets, and am using my sweet mandoline to make thin waffle cuts... thanks for any and all advice!

Cold Spring, NY?
Hi Chowhounders,
ISO a great gift for my Manhattanite sister... I hear good things about Cold Spring- any Inn/dining recs? I'd like to get a weekend of gift certificates together for her and her man. They appreciate the finer things, and love to feel like insiders (sound familiar?).

DC "spare no expense" dinner recs?
Thanks everyone! We're booked at Marcel's, where we were able to get a table at 8:30 (but just barely!).
DC "spare no expense" dinner recs?
Hi Chowhounders,
My husband and I will be enjoying a major celebratory dinner in the DC area this weekend, cost is NOT a factor, for once (lucky us!!!). Any recommendations? The finer & snootier, the better. City Zen? L'Auberge? We're in Richmond, and out of the loop.
Thanks,
Erin
Capitol Hill/RFK Recs?
Thanks to all! I think we'll try Cafe 8, Monmartre, or Belga...
Capitol Hill/RFK Recs?
Hi Chowhounds,
I'll be taking my husband to a DC United game this Saturday, and am looking for restaurants nearby- sounds like that's Capitol Hill. We'll be eating early (5:30/6 PM), so reservations shouldn't be a problem, but we'll be dressed casually for the game. $$ is no object- thanks!

Non-NOBU sushi?
Hounds,
My husband and I have been eager to get a taste of manhattan's finest sushi, but aren't sure whether to believe the hype (or pay the price) for Nobu. Any other suggestions? This is a last-minute trip (we just decided today to leave tomorrow), so we won't have much lead time for reservations, but would happily dine at an off hour, and sunday/monday are options, too.
Money is less of an object than it should be...
Thank you thank you!
