Meatballs with ground beef, ground spicy pork, and ground sweet Italian pork - am I nuts?
Go for it.
What should I have on Angeli's last night?
I am going to try this as both pizza crust and bread:

Also love the veg lasagne but didn't get it today.
What should I have on Angeli's last night?
My son loves it and ate most of it. I had a piece of shrimp, it was pretty good. But I'm so fat and happy from the pizza, gnocchi, soup, bread, and salad.
What should I have on Angeli's last night?
We are doing takeout for our final Angeli meal:
white bean soup, pizza bread
potato croquettes
caesar salad and forte salad
beet gnocchi
sausage & onion pizza and margarita pizza.
The guys are bringing it all home right now. What a treat! I hope her next endeavor won't be too far away. Wish her well and huge thank you to Evan Kleiman and her staff. We have been fans from the start.
Angeli Caffe closing!
Sad indeed. Her sausage & onion pizza is my #1 favorite. Man....
M. F. K. Fisher & Other Foodie Writers From Why Back When
Does anyone else love and miss Laurie Colwin as I do? My favorite (my desired last meal) recipe (tomato pie) she put in Gourmet about 20 years ago. Also enjoy MFK Fisher.
Does anyone actually put stuffing inside the turkey anymore?
It's just better when cooked in the bird--no way around it. I know all the tv chefs don't, though.
Pre-Thanksgiving appetizer, maybe with cranberry?
I was thinking of adding this to our Thanksgiving menu. Tried it and failed to get the pretty product (did not do decorative piping). The result was somewhat tasty, but after my husband named them "meat cookies" while wrapping up, I lost interest.
Looking for Whole Grain Cookbooks
The New Laurels Kitchen and Laurels Kitchen Bread Book. (Sorry my keyboard will not make apostrophes anymore).
What's your preference--Chef Rick or Far Western Tavern?
Leaving early tomorrow from LA--Cambria--we usually stop at Chef Rick but have never made the trek over to FWT. Any opinions?
Also considering checking out other new places (to us) : Bayside Cafe and Giovanni's in Morro Bay, El Bajio and East Beach Grill in Santa Barbara.
Any thoughts? We've been steered to great food by hounds so many times. As always, I'll report back.
Thanks!
Need advice for first-time trip (Santa Barbara, Cambria, Monterey, Yosemite, LAX)
Consider Hoppe's in Cayucos just past Morro bay on your way to Cambria. It has consistently been a favorite in recent trips.

Rivera: Review with pics
Thanks for the nice report. We were there yesterday; we liked the smoky dog snout salsa with tortilla strips. (I forget what the snout reference was about).
The braised kurobuta pork short ribs were a big hit with our son, & my husband enjoyed the poblano chile relleno salad, smoked chicken, corn, pimentón aïoli.
I had the poached artichoke stuffed with marinated slow roasted pork, a dish which sounds more like comfort food than it was, for me. The cold poached artichoke was filled with greens and topped with three slices of pork. A dipping sauce would have improved this dish, or a dressing for the greens which could have done double duty as a dipping sauce for the artichoke. It seems to me that the concept for this dish is incomplete.
The chocolate torte with pineapple was pretty tasty, especially the deep chocolate flavored torte itself.
It was a nice treat to have a genuine sopaipilla. I seem to remember the ones in New Mexico being bigger and puffier and served with honey, though. Rivera served a nice unsalted butter studded with pepper & orange zest with it.
I am happy to have this chef offering his cuisine once again to us here in Los Angeles.
Favorite cheese blend for homemade Mac & Cheese?
That sounds pretty good as is. Sometimes I add smoked gouda &/or neufchatel, or any interesting artisanal cheeses I may have on hand. A little tabasco or other hot sauce adds a little kick.
If there was any left over, did the flavor improve the next day?
La Flor de Yucatan vs. La Mascota tamales
Based on recs on this board, we departed from our usual Christmas tamale source, La Mascota.
Yesterday we tried the two different masa textures with a combination of chicken & pork in each from LFdY, and have over a half dozen remaining tamales which no one in my family likes, either style. The one which had been described as having a silky texture, my husband called slimy--maybe that's a bit harsh. We respect those of you who love La Flor de Yucatan, but we don't get it. Wish we could give you the rest of them.
Well, we learned once again if it ain't broke, don't fix it...and returned to La Mascota today for pork/chile and chicken/chile tamales, still winners in our home. They're less expensive, too.
To each his or her own!

Wine Cottage Bistro Orcutt
You folks are lucky, indeed. That's why we visit as often as we can. Thanks for all the input which has made our trips delicious.
LA to Cambria, advice please?
I posted this separately under the WCB thread:
Googled it and it seems it has become Trattoria Uliveto. Here is a link to a blog describing it:

I have tried to respond responsibly , here. I don't know the status of WCB but that was what we were told on the trip. Thanks to you all.

Jane, I only know what we were told while calling on the road. Perhaps I am wrong. But I am reporting to the best of my ability, and I appreciate you and all others in getting the true information.

LA to Cambria trip report (August)
Sorry to be late on my report, but life has intervened. I had made some notes, though, so here goes.
We timed it too late for lunch in Santa Barbara on the way up (we did stop at Brophy Brothers but the wait was daunting), so we stopped for hors d'oeurves at the bar at The Hitching Post. The grilled artichokes were very tasty with a spicy smoked tomato mayo dipping sauce, and the grilled shrimp were plump and delicious, with a simple butter dipping sauce.
Later we stopped at Chef Rick's in Orcutt. (We called about the Wine Cottage Bistro & were told it had closed). My husband & I split the burger--still very good, but the broccoli slaw was replaced by an ordinary cole slaw (I neglected to mention it at the time, but I see the broccoli slaw is still on the menu, so don't know the story on that). Our son loved the burger with Caesar dressing, bacon, lettuce & tomato.
We also tried El Chorlito in San Simeon. It was pretty good. The breading on the chile relleno was too thick for my preference, but I like that they use fresh, healthy ingredients, such as a whole wheat tortilla option for the tostada.
We had takeout desserts from Robin's--cheesecake, creme brulee, & wild berry tart. Quite good. Next time we might give them another try for a meal, as we used to in the good old days. We missed out on Sow's Ear & Wild Ginger. Next time...
Our favorite in the area is still Hoppe's Bistro. I had a wild mushroom soup, a little too earthy for me, so my husband finished it. I also ordered the mozzarella & tomato pizza, delicious, to share with my husband, with My Mother's butter lettuce salad, champagne vinaigrette, very fresh and satisfying. Our son devoured his Cayucos Kobe beef burger with Gorgonzola cheese and Caesar salad. We shared the Chocolate Oblivion Torte with praline ice cream and the organic cheesecake with raspberry coulis, both top notch. How I wish this place was in our neighborhood.
We tried Brophy Brothers in Ventura on the way home; no wait, a nice spot on the patio outdoors overlooking the boats. We enjoyed the freshness of the food. The fish & chips had a perfect batter, the chowder is a respectable version. The calimari was crispy fried & fresh tasting. The house dressing, though, was bland. This is a nice spot which we will try again.
Bland But Strongly Flavored Foods
Could she tolerate some chicken noodle soup, perhaps with whole wheat noodles for better nutrition?

You people are all so great. Thanks!! One of these farmers markets will work. Will try the oranges.
Still wondering, if you had to choose in Orcutt: We love Chef Rick but haven't tried Wine Cottage Bistro or 3rd Coast Cafe. Stick with the tried & true?
Also is Splash the best bet for chowder? Never been to Jocko either.
Thanks again for the help. There are so many great choices & we want to choose wisely.

Thanks for the link.
We had planned to go to the Cambria farmers' market remembering it as being on Thursday--unfortunately we will be driving home on Friday so will miss it since it's on Friday afternoon. We've enjoyed it in the past. Is there another on Friday further down the coast?
I will report back. I'm curious about El Chorlita in San Simeon. We'll check it out.

We usually stop at Chef Rick in Orcutt--should we try Wine Cottage Bistro or 3rd Coast Cafe?
Best bet for a lunch in Santa Barbara area? (Hungry Cat)?
What is the best clam chowder on this trip? Good bakeries for whole grain breads, good cheese shops? Best Mexican--La Super Rica, Taco Temple--what else?
Will definitely stop at Hoppe's in Cayucos, a favorite spot.
It has been nearly 2 years since our last trip. What's new in Cambria? Last time we enjoyed Wild Ginger. What is the status of Sow's Ear? Haven't been there in many years. How is Robin's these days?
TIA for any input.
The prices these days and disappointing meals
We will check it out, thanks. I know we were there many years ago when we lived in Silverlake. What is good to order these days?
