What are the best bakeries in Dallas?

Yes, Empire is the best in town for bread, but their pastry is sub-par.

Asian Meatballs

I love the lions head meatballs at Shanghai Restaurant (same shopping center as Penzy's). Very large and saucy, though, so I'm not sure that's what you're looking for. But, I thought I'd mention them, since my 2-year-old son loves them. He's also a big fan of their xiao long bao.

Where do you get your Holiday turkey from?

We've been getting 100% pastured turkey at Urban Acres in Oak Cliff for the past few years. We've been quite pleased. You're supposed to order in advance, but they usually have a few extras, too.

Parmesan

They may not deliver all the way up to Plano, but I've been ordering Parm from Scardello from Artizone. There are a couple other similar delivery services in the area, too.

Birthday dinner in Oak Cliff

I'd also consider CampO - fun placed loosely based on the cuisine of Mendoza, Argentina. Haven't been to Driftwood yet (near Bolsa), but if you love seafood that might be worth trying.

Best Chicken in Dallas area

Windy Meadows is the most readily available pastured chicken in the area - Urban Acres has a large selection of whole birds, parts, feet, livers, etc. I think Bolsa Mercado sells a bit of it, but the selection is more limited.

Free Range Chicken in DFW?

The Urban Acres store on Davis in Oak Cliff sells Windy Meadows chicken - whole and all sorts of cuts, including bags of chicken feet for stock.

Romanesco

Yep, a little early - the ones in my garden aren't close to ready yet.

The Porch -- Two Visits

I quite like Porch for lunch. I made the mistake of going for dinner once on a Friday night and NEVER AGAIN.

Central Texas BBQ coming to Dallas' Oak Cliff.

Had lunch last Saturday. Had the brisket and the regular sausage - thought both were pretty good, but not transcendent. Our favorite thing, though, was the deviled egg that had bits of brisket in it, then was put back in the smoker. We were there before noon and the place was packed.

While I'm thinking about it, Steak Tartare...

I found Touluse to have a good classic tartare. Tried the tartare at the Chop House on Monday - pretty good, but a little too much stuff in there - overseasoned.

Craving croissants

Haven't tried any of the other pastries, but the croissants are pretty good. But yeah, they're right down the street from Spiral Diner.

Saturday Brunch..Help?

I like Bolsa, but I can't say I love their lunch offerings.

Tillman's is good for lunch/bruch (better than for dinner, I think) and it's been a big hit with out-of-towners I've taken there. I think they have a private room if that matters.

La Duni is a favorite for Saturday brunch, since they offer a real brunch menu on Saturdays.

eta: Smoke does have a nice brunch (don't know if they offer it on Saturdays) . I like the brunch menu better than the dinner menu.

Lucia Now Open

So excited to try this place! It'll be so nice to have decent Italian here in Oak Cliff! I'll still make the trip to Nona for the clam pizza, though.

Craving croissants

I'll second Rush's croissants - you can get them some Saturdays at Urban Acres in Oak Cliff, too.

You are correct - there's now a sign up for Gloria's on the firehouse and for the BBQ place where the Mexican place just closed.

Dallas Steakhouse Recommendations

I've had a couple of fairly poor meals at Al Biernat's - good people watching, but lousy food. I much prefer Nick and Sam's.

Dallas, near Hotel Indigo, Downtown Historic District?

Agreed on Steven Pyles or 560 for dinner. I'd also suggest the bar at Dallas Fish Market for dinner on one of the more casual nights - they've got a separate bar menu that's much less expensive than the regular menu. You'll be just a block away from the Dallas Chop House - hardly the best steakhouse in Dallas, but pretty good and very convenient.

For pub food, I'd suggest City Tavern on Main Street - the place is a dive but the food is surprising good (try the wing sandwich).

The Nieman Marcus cafe is probably one of your best bets for lunch takeout.

Arcodoro Pomodoro

I'm not the person who said go anywhere else, even Pizza Hut, but I could have been - and it's not because I don't understand non-Americanized Italian food. The one time I went to Arcodoro Pomodoro the food and service were so unbelievably bad that I've never been back. For our pasta course, the pasta had either been languishing under heat lamps or the plates themselves had been way too hot - the pasta literally was cooked onto the plate. We would have sent the plates back, but our waiter disappeared for 45 minutes at a time. Worst of all, I got the worst case of food poisoning that I've had since moving to Dallas 4 years ago. Based on other reviews I've seen, it may have just been a really off night for them - but my experience was bad enough that I'm not interested in giving them another shot.

Empanadas (Dallas)

Since this thread has popped back up, I thought I would mention that this place has been open for a couple of months now. The empanadas are by far the best thing we've tried there - we particularly like the spicy beef, regular beef and the tomato and cheese. Reminds us of our honeymoon in Buenos Aires!

Dallas - best flour tortillas?

I'd also love to know which mercados you like. There's a new place on Davis between Edgefield and Clinton that I've been meaning to check out.

Restaurants everyone loves--except you

Fearings - Did not find the food particularly interesting or well executed for the price, the decor straight out of the 80s, and the service suffocatingly obsequious (like at all Ritz hotels worldwide).

Breadwinners – I just don’t get it. So not worth the long waits. Terrible pastry, poor execution on a lot of the breakfast items.

I like Nonna, myself – particularly the clam pizza. Not New Haven style clam pizza, but yummy. And I’ll confess that I don’t mind Mi Cocina for a business lunch – for myself I’ll hit my local places in OC.

Trying to figure out the location... is this what's going into firehouse? Or where the Mexican place that just closed was?

The Porch in Dallas

I really like Porch for lunch, but I wouldn't bother with it for dinner. It becomes quite a scene in the evenings and I think the place loses its focus on the food.
