SF in July with 3 picky eaters - any thoughts?

Check out the menu from the Tadich Grill. Let the kids fill up on the wonderful bread, and you and your wife enjoy the petrale sole or the sand dabs.

Shave ice on the Malibu Pier

As the weather is getting warmer, here is a reminder that a few years ago, Diddy Riese in Westwood Village added shave ice (when they discontinued the hot dogs). Last I saw, it cost a buck for three flavors w/o ice cream, $1.50 with a scoop. They have about a dozen flavors of syrups, all from the familiar-looking bottles. A very good-sized refreshing serving for the price.

Actually, now that I think about those lines lately, forget the above.

Pizza Mozza, Patina, Gjelina and Spago reserved. Where else should I eat?

Where are you staying? Those recent threads of cheap eats would be worth printing...

McDonald's Cherry Berry Chiller - YUM

I love their frozen lemonade, but without the strawberry syrup. The lemonade is tart and sweet, very refreshing, and the strawberry just muddles the whole thing.

Bludso's Texas Sampler - will it hold?

Doing the Hollywood>Compton trip on a Saturday will help much much more than a little bit. The only other complication is whether there is a Dodger home game that night, which would slow down the last part of your return.

Enjoy Bludso's, have a great time the rest of your trip, and definitely report back. If I can be of any additional assistance, my email is listed on my CH page.

Bludso's Texas Sampler - will it hold?

Hollywood is north and a bit west of downtown L.A., Compton is way south and east.

BBQ holds very well -- smoking was originally used as a means of preserving the meat. The traffic is MUCH more of a problem. Try to get to Bludso's between 11 and 2 and either have it for lunch or reheat for dinner -- what little you lose with the meal will be more than made up for by avoiding the rush hour traffic. Another option is to try for a Sat or Sun.

One more concern -- Bludso's is on a major boulevard and is fine -- I go myself. But Compton can have some of the meanest streets and neighborhoods in SoCal, so I would stick to the freeways and major streets and be careful if after dark.

Burnt ends etc.

It is Bludso's BBQ, in Compton. Well worth checking out.

Del Taco Coming To SM Blvd. WLA

Since I view the tacos primarily as a vehicle for consuming the surprisingly good and spicy El Scorcho hot sauce, I'll stick with the regular tacos. They are 3 for $1.09 on Tuesdays, according to the web site.

That strip center, with the Winchell's on the east and Yoshinoya on the west, with pizza, a Quizno's and some others between and the very solid Hole in the Wall Burger alongside, has definite parking issues, even with one anchor closed. With a high-volume Del Taco, something's gotta give.

Del Taco Coming To SM Blvd. WLA

Wow, I wonder if it will be replacing the former Koo Koo Roo.

Del Taco Coming To SM Blvd. WLA

A sign at the Del Taco on Venice Blvd. says they are hiring for a new location on Santa Monica Blvd., with an address between 10000 and 11000. Does anyone know exactly where? (cross street or what it is replacing) I know it is a chain, but four regular crispy tacos, each with two packets of their hottest sauce, is about the best quick lunch or snack I know for $2.

Souffle in LA?

Souffle is really a fairly easy dish -- all restaurants have eggs. The issue is whether they have the dishes in which to cook them. I'd call Bouchon and ask if they can work with you, providing you arrange in advance.

Westside- Westchester, El Segundo, Venice- Burger Craving

The Shack in Playa.

Big Mike's on Main in El Segundo does perhaps the best Philly Cheesesteak in SoCal. Their burgers look good but I haven't tried them. Good light-battered onion rings.

Hinano in the last block from the beach on Washington does a great burger in a divy bar setting, but parking is difficult.

In N Out Burger question for a newbie

In'n'Out's double-double is a very good burger. The patties are hot off the grill, the cheese is a bit thicker sliced than most, the lettuce is cold and crisp, the tomato usually good. But the secret -- don't tell -- is the bun. It is nicely toasted on the burger side and really soft and light on the outer sides, always very fresh, really superior to the buns at competitors.

Why is the Olive Garden so reviled?

The pastas are overcooked and the sauces have to be squeezed out of plastic bags, right?

Business Lunch near Miracle Mile

You could ask for one of the upstairs rooms at Campanile.

dinner near the Troubadour

If you want to settle for good chilidogs and burgers, Carney's is nearby and has easy, free parking.

Eastside Deli, on Alpine east of Beaudry, makes huge, great sandwiches. The hot ones (#7, roast beef and pastrami) might be too messy for comfortable eating at the stadium though they wrap them well.

Breakfast in LA near Museum of Tolerance

Servorg has been raving about the lemon pancakes at John O'Groats. Located on the S side of Pico, just west of Century City and the Rancho Park golf course, south on Patricia and park behind the restaurant to the right.

Naples Prix Fix Menu

Roy's prix fixe menu is available every night, I think. There are a lot more choices -- I think any appetizer or entree, with only a couple of exceptions -- on Mondays.

Cafe Lurcat has a very excellent value menu before 6:30. Here is a sample:

We have enjoyed it and received absolutely no attitude for taking advantage of it. The pot roast, which was excellent and a large portion, was served in a charming individual copper pot.

How would you tell the story if it was Game 1 of the '88 Series and you were in line waiting for ice cream, watching on the monitors, when K. Gibson hit his historic HR?

Very close to Dodger Stadium, just east at No. Broadway at 19th, is Carnitas Michaocan. It is an open-aired taqueria open 24/7 with good carne asada, better al pastor from a rotisserie spit, and the best salsa roja in town. Burritos are the way to go (I get mine w/o beans), tacos are very small, and they do good nachos with meat and quesadillas.

Any food sold at the stadium has to be mass-produced with multiple serving lines. A wait of twenty minutes, which is fun with the anticipation of standing in line at 800 Degrees, would be brutal missing an inning or more during a ballgame.

BTW -- Is there any noticeable difference between a Cool-a-Coo and an Its-It?

Cheapest all you can eat KOREAN bbq in Los Angeles?

There was a new one in K-Town with one for $10 or so a couple of months ago. Check the blog Midtown Lunch, scrolling back. Need to check, as there were warnings even then that it might be an intro deal that would go up. But the original review found it pretty good, especially for the price.

Cheap Lunch in Santa Monica?

When I'm that far it is so difficult not to go a little further to Big Mike's on Main in El Segundo for the Philly Cheesesteak and light-battered onion rings. Nice little drive skirting LAX along the ocean.

PRIME RIB

I was going to suggest you roast some yourself -- prime rib is ridiculously easy, and choice bone-in roasts are occasionally as low as $4.97/lb. at Ralph's.

Then it hit me -- a lot of the deli areas at upscale Ralph's do hot meals to go, with prime rib as an option. I think it is meat, two sides, maybe a roll for $9.99 or less. I'm sure they sell the prime rib by itself, all cooked and ready to go. It always looks good and smells fine when I pass by, so the main issue is getting the doneness you want.

Cheap Lunch in Santa Monica?

On Wednesdays all of the Shack's burgers are $2 off. I like the double-cheeseburger (massive) better than the Shackburger with the split sausage/dog.

Best place for fun graduation dinner near ucla

OK, how about comfort food done well? They are known for their excellent mac'n'cheese -- good shared as a starter.

And wsg -- I know to be cautious when ordering any fish! ;-)

I like the chicken paillard. And when they used to have potroast, or shortrib, it was a generous, rich, very satisfying dish.

Food for plane on route from midtown to LAX

I may get flamed for recommending a chain, but Popeye's is the best of the fast food chicken, the food will come boxed and will hold up, and it is easily accessible on La Brea just north of Jefferson, on the N/E corner.

Graduation Dinner for 4 on westside

Gjelina on Abbott Kinney in Venice is my favorite restaurant in SoCal the last few years. Call now for a reservation and ask for the patio -- they'll tell you they can't promise it, so ask again when you confirm.

Spago has a nice patio and several posters on this board have raved about the tasting menu there.

Many say that the best tasting menu in town is at Providence, a bit further east.

LA Cheap Eats Food Tour--The Aftermath...

Potato balls!!!!

Umami Burgers....Worth the price ??

I thought the burger I tried (at least a couple of years ago, at the original location) was very good. I think at the time it was $9. My problem was with the sides. The order of fries or onion rings (I forget which I ordered, but I saw several coming out) were miniscule, and at about $4 or more, expensive. So there I was, over $15 w/o a drink and including tax and tip, for a lunch that didn't fill me up.

What really galled me, and kept me from returning, was the parking situation. When I tried to leave I was boxed in by another car. I notified a couple of different servers and they did NOTHING to help. Finally, after fifteen minutes, I went back min and screamed myself to identify the owner of the offending SUV.
