Too much smoked fish

Thanks everyone. The cod is history (easy effort) but I am still working on the lox. I still have plenty of bagels around the house to keep me busy. I am trying lox, eggs and onions tomorrow.

Is Breed Street Food Fair still around?

Just to clarify...I hope you realize that was a joke. I have the background and know all about the BSS.

Too much smoked fish

ROFL! I just made another bagel with cream cheese, lox, tomato and a slug of the cod on the side.

What's a shul Das :) ??

Too much smoked fish

I am almost embarassed to say I got a bit carried away this morning. After having a wonderful breakfast at Brent's early this morning I thought I would take some fish home for the rest of the weekend. The guy at the counter asked me what I wanted and I DID NOT THINK. I just said "oh just give me a pound of lox and cod". I guess it really hit me when paying my bill and the total of the fish and breakfast came to $101.23. OY VEY. What do I do now?

Cooking grass fed beef

Thanks everyone.

Cooking grass fed beef

I have been buying grass fed beef locally but have not figured out how to cook it so it is not overdone. Is there some site or chart that someone has done on this topic that lists the various cuts of beef and suggested times for cooking? For example how long do I cook a 2lb meat loaf of extra lean GFB in the oven? Normally I would cook it about 75 minutes at 350 degrees. I recently cooked steaks on the grill and they went from rare to well done in a flash. I don't want to have to experiment endlessly and ruin good beef so any help that my fellow CH'ers can offer will be appreciated.

Where to buy grass fed beef or farm specific beef in LA?

Everything I have gotten from Novy beef has been frozen. The ranch is way up North and the cattle are processed in Roseville Oregon. I can't imagine how they could distribute fresh meat all over the state.

Susan, It was from Novy Ranch. The owner is a longtime well respected veterinarian from Simi Valley. Lowell Novy spent his youth in stockyards and bought a cattle ranch near the Nevada border in the 1970's. I have tried the meat and I love it.

Looking For Restaurant With Great Bone Marrow / Marrow-Based Dish

If you are talking TO and WLV then try the osso bucco at Viva La Pasta in Wood Ranch/Simi Valley. This is close to the 23 freeway. This is a great Italian place that is not at all expensive. They also have a restaurant in Moorpark but I cannot vouch for it as I have never been.

TAM O'SHANTER

I equate the place with the story of the emperors new clothes. I just don't get it. For our wedding anniversary I wanted to take my wife to "someplace new" and "a piece of LA history." My wife and I had sub par food all the way around. I can't understand how they are connected to Lawry's which is so much better.

Does anyone have a recipe for this? Thanks and a Happy Passover to everyone.

Know any businesses that sell microwaveable plastic food containers in the LA metro?

There are regular S&F and also their "extra" stores which carry far more than the average store. Looking at their website I do not see a way to look for the extra stores only. Maybe the extra store will have what you want. Moorpark has an extra store BTW.

Jack-in-the-Box Tacos -- 50 years of skid-marked cardboard

My wife loves their tacos and I cannot understand it. By the same token she like hospital food too having worked at several hospitals in her career. Good post. The comments have me laughing.

Grocery Store Fried Chicken

Albertson's is my choice. I have had various grocery store fried chicken and they consistently produce a good product. Because taste and quality may vary from store to store in any supermarket chain I would go to the store where you would be ordering from and get a few pieces to try.

Cowboy caviar

Thanks. I just saw this ladies show recently and I like her.

Weiner Factory? Do you mean the Wein truck?

Cowboy caviar

Does anyone have their own take on this dish? I have had it recently and it is delicious. Costco is even carrying it now in southern California.

I must second the Baklava Factory and apologize for forgetting it. Excellent stuff and so many varieties.

There are so many choices living in your area. May I suggest Marv's Deli. No it is not Brent's but they have some great food. Very old school place.

Also nice place for smoked meats is Sausage King. It is not a restaurant but a great place for smoked sausages and some European grocery items.

Another type of reply problem

For the past four weeks or so *at times* when I reply to a post my profile keeps coming up. It is happening now. I am using FF 10.0.2 (the latest version) exclusively on WIN-7. I am 100% updated on all software and add ons.

Merguez sausages or sandwiches on the Westside?

Second Jeff's for sure. Merguez is his specialty.

Canton Chinese Simi Valley

I wanted to add that they do not use MSG and use fresh veggies at all time in their food. No canned veggies,

Canton Chinese Simi Valley

Today I was hungry and wanted to try something new that was local. That in itself is a daunting task here in Simi. I needed a place that would satisfy my very picky wife which meant that it had to have a lot of offerings with a lot of veggies. Because I swore that recently I had seen a sign advertising new management I decided to try Canton Chinese. After speaking to the owner I found out that they changed hands over two years ago. So much for paying attention to signs. Nevertheless we walked in to an empty restaurant at 3pm on a Sunday. We ordered chicken chow mein, sesame chicken, vegetable fried rice and egg rolls. The egg rolls were sort of plain, filled with crisp veggies and not greasy. The chow mein was a far cry from what I had for years as a kid. It was delicious and not drenched in the dreaded white flour sauce I have often had. The veggies were crisp, delicious and and colorfully appealing. The sesame chicken was not drenched in a heavy kind of sauce but rather had a spicy tangy flavor which I loved. The fried rice was good but may have been overdone somewhat having an almost dark look to it but I still liked it. Everything was plated beautifully on modern hip looking dishes. The place is at least two steps above the local neighborhood Chinese restaurants. The total with two iced teas was $34.10 plus tip. I will be back soon.
