Portland in the NY Times

Interestingly, the Portland Press Herald has a front-page article today about the article which appeared in the Times:

Evangeline, Portland, Me.

Wife and I had dinner at Evangeline Monday night, after reading about the chef/owner and his wife, who is the chef/owner of Bresca, who cook together at Evangeline with a limited prix fixe menu and a limited staff, only on Mondays, when both restaurants would otherwise be closed. (http://www.restaurantevangeline.com/recognition/sherman.htm )

The prix fixe menu (no longer $25; it was $38 this week) offered two choices for the 1st course, two choices for the 2nd course, an optional cheese course (for $5 extra), and one choice for dessert.

For 1st course, wife had the local farm green salad with marinated cucumber. The greens were fresh and delicious and it was a very nice salad. I chose the ivory salmon with potatoes, bacon and chives. A nice piece of salmon with crispy skin attached. The flesh was moist and succulent and cooked to perfection, almost but not quite raw. It was served with some finely diced potatoes, bits of thick, crisp bacon and chives.

For 2nd course, the choices were hake from Browne Trading with warm tomato, fennel and shallot salad or duck leg confit with Maine white beans and wilted rainbow chard. The fish sounded good, but we both chose the duck leg confit. I thought it was outstanding. Some of the most flavorful duck I have tasted in a very long time.

We shared the optional cheese course, Fern Hill chevre with marinated beets. It was very good, but not as exciting to me as the ivory salmon or the duck confit.

The dessert course was Maine blueberry clafoutis, a sort of creamy pudding with blueberries. A pleasant ending for a very enjoyable dinner.

Had dinner at Venezia a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I keep meaning to go back again and will try to do so soon.

Portland ME - where to eat, what to see?

For oysters, try the Old Port Sea Grill.

Restaurant gift certificate ideas in/around Exeter, NH

If they like Loaf & Ladle, I think Black Trumpet might be a little over the top for them. I suspect they would enjoy Townlyne Grill in Exeter, or maybe 1686 House in Kingston? I think Ship to Shore in Newfields would be fun for them, too.

Six Burner Bistro: Plymouth, NH

Thanks for the report on Six Burners. Wife and I took a foliage trip yesterday and stopped for lunch. She had chicken and pasta soup, which was like a very good home-made chicken-noodle soup, and half a pastrami and Swiss cheese sandwich. I had the corn and lobster chowder, which was a thick, rich corn chowder with fairly large chunks of lobster meat, with half a tuna and wasabi wrap, which turned out be garnished with moist and crunchy seaweed. I also had the risotto ball of the day, which was mozzarelli and raspberry risotto fried in a good sized "ball," golden crispy on the outside and creamy inside. Only complaint: the delicious soups would be better if served a bit hotter. We are glad we planned our trip around Plymouth and the Six Burners Bistro.

Friendly Toast, Old Munich/A Taste of Europe, Good Fortune

Thanks for the report on Taste of Europe (aka Old Munich). Wife and I went shopping today at LL Bean and drove up to Topsham for lunch at A Taste of Europe, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We each had a bowl of their rich and flavorful Hungarian goulash soup and shared a bratwurst served with spicy mustard, potato salad and sauerkraut. We intended to skip dessert, but when our waitress, Cathy (daughter of the chef/owner) mentioned the apple strudel (freshly made by her mother), we couldn't resist. It was delicious! Hope to return, probably the next time we get to LL Bean.

Chow at Waterfire in Providence?

We followed your suggestion and made reservation at Local 121 and used their valet parking. The food was excellent. Easy walk from there to Waterfire. Thanks!

Whole-Belly Clams in Cape Ann Area?

Thanks for the suggestion. We got there today just a couple of minutes before they opened at 11 am. We were the first persons there and got served immediately. The clams were among the best we ever had! Within minutes after 11 am, the place was crowded. We are delighted with our good luck -- and no line!

1640 Hart House in Ipswich?

I've searched Chowhond, but find very few references to 1640 Hart House, Ipswich. Who has any info about this place? Is it worth a visit?

Chow at Waterfire in Providence?

We are planning our first trip to Providence next week and we hope to see Waterfire. What should a Chowhound do for dinner? Is chow-worthy food available at Waterfire, or should we plan to have dinner in the area before or after Waterfire? Thanks for your advice on this!

Rhode Island Clam Chowder?

We are planning our first trip to Rhode Island next week and I am interested in trying Rhode Island clam chowder for the first time. Do most restaurants in RI which serve chowder, offer the RI style, or are there certain places where that style of chowder is served? We welcome any advice you can offer.

Whole-Belly Clams in Cape Ann Area?

We are planning our first trip to Cape Ann area and hope to enjoy some great whole-belly crumb-fried clams. Is there any chance of getting them at places like Clam Box, Farnham's or Essex Seafood without waiting hours in line? Is there an "off-peak" time when one can get served more quickly than at other times? We welcome your recommendations.

Unread Posts Disappear!

This still keeps happening to me! Does no one have an explanation -- or a solution?

Unread Posts Disappear!

Very often, I find a lot of posts listed under "My Unread Posts," so I read a thread, go back to Unread Posts, read the next thread, go back again etc. Occasionally, after doing this a few times, suddenly when I go back I find only a blank page under My Unread Posts with a message, "There are no new posts," even though I know there were still a lot of threads that I had not read yet.

Is this a glitch -- or am I doing something wrong?

I can't figure out how to post!!!!

Very interesting! How would anyone know you could do that if they hadn't happened to read this post?

npr interview

I agree with 18465 one hundred percent. It's hard to believe that the tremendous job the moderators are doing can be done by so few people! And I am convinced that Chowhound would be far less interesting and a lot less valuable without them. Thank you, moderators! Keep up the good work!

How do you use Popular Boards?

I have no use for the Popular Boards list and I never look at it. I just click on the Boards link at the top of the page, which is useful. I can't think of any possible use for Popular Boards list as it now appears.

Galley Hatch would be my choice. I do not know a lot of places in that area, but I have been to Galley Hatch and it is not bad. http://www.galleyhatch.com/

ChinoWayne, thank you so much! I didn't even recognize the large font heading THE DIGEST as a link. It looked like just a part of the heading to me until I hovered my mouse pointer over it..

Any authentic German restaurants in MA/NH/Southern ME?

After reading the post from kegirl, above, I sent email to the address listed in their website ( http://www.thevienna.com/restaurant.html ) and got a nice reply from Lisa at Vienna Restaurant. She emailed their complete menus. And, yes, they do have Tafelspitz!

Sticky topics

Where do you find "sticky topics" and where is "Bookmarking/Email notification changes topic"? I have looked everywhere I can think of but see no such references.

Nice new update to expand/collapse

Yes, I see now that is exactly what happens.

To me, that seems a bit confusing, and inconsistent. Would it not be a lot more useful if ALL of the posts would collapse when you have read everything in a given thread? That way, you would see at a glance that you have, in fact, read everything.

If you see the posts are NOT collapsed, wouldn't that seem to suggested that you have not yet read those posts? In which case, under the present system, you find yourself re-reading posts you have alrady read!

It seems to me that consistency would be a better practice: A collapsed post would ALWAYS be a signal that it is a post you have read. Then an expanded post would always be an indication that it is a post you have not yet read.

Old Port Sea Grill in Portland - Report

Wife and I stopped in at the Old Port Sea Grill today for a quick, light lunch. I especially wanted to try the oysters. They were offering 5 or 6 varieties. I chose 3 Damariscotta and 3 Winter Point. They were perfectly fresh, immaculately clean and thoroughly chilled. The Damariscottas were large, plump and mild. The Winter Points were a bit smaller, but intensely flavored and delicious.

I followed this with a bowl of fish chowder, a little thicker than I might have preferred and no trace of the salt pork which my wife cooks in her fish chowder, but it was rich and full of fish flavor. The tasty chunks of fish were moist and perfectly cooked.

My wife had a roasted beet salad, full of beet greens, slices of red and yellow beets, toasted walnuts and creamy feta cheese with a flavorful vinaigrette dressing. It was a little unusual -- and delicious.

I like this place and hope to return.
