Arriving from Memphis

Thanks twinwillow! The hours for Pecan Lodge's hours are really difficult with our time frame. Is the farmers market only open Thurs - Sun? Thanks for Slow Bone alert! Mexican list is looking good.

Requiring a credit card to make a reservation?

Well gee whiz Andrew - our reservation is for lunch also. Guess it just depends on who answers the phone. And true too Bill OT did not not have a 7:30 time for Herbsaint but when we called they gave us one. And btw bill hunt do you need to adopt a daughter? Or a traveling companion cause you sure seem to eat well!

Requiring a credit card to make a reservation?

Thanks sanglier! This is the first time we have come across this practice even in NYC and DC we haven't been required to do so. We are going to be in NOLA at the start of The French Quater festival and wonder if that has anything to do with it. Too bad for the people with good manners having to be lumped in with the others.

Requiring a credit card to make a reservation?

We are in NOLA 2-3 x per year and make reservations by phone and on Open Table. This is the first time when making reservations by phone that we have been asked for a credit card number to hold a time. Herb saint said a 24 hr cancellation or there would be a charge. Cochon said a 48 hr cancellation or a $25.00 per person charge. The times we wanted were not available on Open Tale but were available by phone. So what's up ?

First timers in NOLA

HEY- just checked in- We are going to NOLA this weekend too- 32nd Anniversary- We ate at Mila in April and loved it and are going back on Friday. Hope to do some Tales tastings. Cochon is great! Luke is really good too, We enjoyed the Coffee Pot for a hearty meal and surly waitress. Had some spectacular fried chicken at Willie Maes last time - hour wait though. Check out Snug Harbor also for music. Be sure to do the Carousel Bar! It is really tough to fit in all the great places, but you will enjoy wherever you are. For a big buck meal/ fine dinning August is hard to beat

Disappointed by Galatoire's...

We have eaten there several times over the last few years- and have had amazing "I have died and gone to heaven" events to "ok". Generally upstairs is not as good/ fun and Sunday evening not so good. Still - We LOVE the place and look forward to going. The old schoolness of the downstairs is so charming and I know NOT being a REGULAR makes the deal different but give 'em another try someday= go before they smoozch with the hostess on a Friday and dress NICE and then you will see>>>>

responding to the question " Is everthing ok?"

Thank you all for the replies and "Yes" in response to Steady Habits we were quick to praise the Benne Seed Shrimp Appetizer and the Lamb Chop Lollipops.

In a somewhat related experience, this past year a bistro/bakery opened within a few blocks of our house and we were delighted to have a place nearby. However we became friendly with the couple - this was their third restaurant - and felt that the hot food lunch buffet left something to be desired. They had different presentation at night with a chef, table cloths and bistro type meals. It seemed awkward to express how unattractive the layout of the lunch menu was in addition to other needed improvements. Unfortunately, they were forced to close after a few months. They were crushed. It seemed to us they were trying to do too many things- a bakery, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. They did have consultant in but did not heed his suggestions. I really want to support independently owned restaurants ( and bookstores) but they do have to please the customer.

responding to the question " Is everthing ok?"

Last night we were having dinner with another couple at white tablecloth restaurant and I had ordered a pasta dish with smoked duck breast and creamy mushroom sauce. Another member of the of the party ordered the same thing and we agreed It was not particularly flavorful. When the waiter came by with the usual question we replied with an "okay". Then the owner came by later and asked if we enjoyed the food. I replied with rather vague neutral answer and he asked me again very pointedly to which I replied the dish was rather bland.
He seemed taken a back.. He did offer another dish which I declined; every one else was finished by then. The other dinning companion had finished his entree, however I did not ( I do consider that Hi carb and fat dishes have to be worthy to be eaten) . But planned to take the leftovers and have a couple of meals after making some additions. The owner also offered a complimentary dessert, which I declined. We did subsequently ordered a dessert to share. This provoked much discussion among us that shouldn't the owner/ manager want to know and was entitled to a truthful answer. I am not a big complainer by nature. This was single owner independent restaurant, we had previously had an excellent meal there with the same chef. Should this have be handled differently by me and/or the owner? I might add the chef did come by all the tables later and we did not mention the bland dish to him as I assumed the owner would take care of that.

Muffs

Well _ Thanks for all the help- we ended up in dash to get out of town- and the Bellhop at the Hotel said Mother's had Muffelattas and I kept saying " I've never noticed them on the menu " and he kept saying yes- so we go and of course NO Muffs. but we did get yummy roast beef po boy to go.
any way other wise on the trip = we had super dinners at Stella's and Bayona's!
( although they gave our table to someone with a similar sounding name and we ended up in the ATTIC! a bit claustrophobic. But service and food = EXCELLENT!)
Galitoires was a bit disappointing this time - Sunday evening - the waiter never did look at us! took adequate but not exceptional care of us and spent a LOT of time with the hostess. Also had a nice breakfast at the Coffee Pot-

will keep all MUff recomendations for the NEXT trip>

Muffs

Thank you all for for such wonderful stories. and thanks to my Knight Sir Hazelhurst for another rescue. My father in law still talks about the Roosevelt. And what about the Kolbe ?
I believe we ate there 30 years ago on our honeymoon. This time tomorrow we will be in blessed NOLA.

Galatoire's Etiquette

I guess we have wandered off the etiquette track but this is so fascinating to me talk with some one with so much history there. I always look a the families and friends gathered around the tables and want to know more.
What are your favorites on the menu? I fall in love with the souffle potatoes every time and then we get big eyes and order the Grand Goute . and then we order an entree - somehow we eat it too. I love the Pompano since we never see it in Memphis. I still go into daze when I remember the bread pudding with a glass of cognac that near about put me in a coma with pleasure a few years ago. Oh such anticipation!

Galatoire's Etiquette

Thanks so much for sharing. We hope to slide in late on Friday evening- if not will have to go for another time on the weekend. Our friends are arriving earlier than we and will be there for the Friday lunch/afternoon festivities and we are jealous of that. I hope you enjoy many more years at the best place on earth.

Lyonola - Thank you so much! Very kind of you. I thought we had a Richard once- haven't seen him since. but he was very young and this was soon AK he did direct us to the Carousel Bar for a Ramos Gin Fizz which I had been seeking. I love the old timers.

Galatoire's Etiquette

hazelhurst - thanks for your reply- I do want to say with all due respect that I realize the waiter/customer situation is different at Galatoire's. That is a part of the charm. We dress with care before going, we consider the time of day and day of the week. We also want to for brief time be a part of the family, a part of the party. We are not privilaged to live in NOLA full time. Our visit to Galatoire's is high point of our stay and no matter where else we eat be it August or Herbsaint or Bayona or any other of the numerous wonderful places Galatoires is the one we anticipate and remember the most. Asking for a name was not meant to be disrepectful - quite the opposite. a wish to - having already planned our arrival and our attire in order to pass the person at the doors quick "up and down" to not fail at the moment when that person asks - And who would you like?

Galatoire's Etiquette

We are going to NOLA this weekend and have to go to Galatoires as usual but it has been a year and I wondering if anyone would let go of a waiter's name?? you gotta have name in order to not look like a newby. but it seems that there are more new faces since Katrina. Thanks.

St Charles, Mo ?

Been searching the past boards for places to eat at this weekend- we are staying in St. Charles so maybe one dinner there would be handy. Last time we ate at a place on Main- something related to Lewis and Clark maybe? Any other ideas? Have always had a night at Lorenzo's on past visits and really enjoyed that place. Looks like Sidney Street and Niche are hot> any suggestions greatly appreciated.
