Gaithersburg?

I second Il Pizzico. It is the best restaurant within .5 miles of 270 and Shady Grove, and probably my favorite restaurant in the north Rockville area, not counting ethnic. For ethnic, well the OP is in luck, because Minerva is literally at that intersection and is absolutely delicious Indian (but also a bit of a dive). If the OP is willing to travel slightly further, Cava is not far from there. Stella Restaurant is next to Cava basically and is also very good. Founding Farmers is about 10 minutes away is well regarded.

Quick Trip Report: Minibar and Komi

Having dined there once myself, I can confirm that it rules hard. I had a baby goat entree which was incredible. It's very inventive but not in a foam celery puree "of the moment" way. Hotel, have fun, you lucky bastard.

Silver Spring, MD

OP wants Silver Spring restaurants, so I'm not going to recommend Central Michel Richard. 8407 Kitchen Bar is the best place I've been in SS proper. Charm Thai is a good lunch spot. Very quick and efficient. Solid prices.

Ghar-E-Kabob has the best Indian buffet in town. I second Mi Rancho. Passage to India is a great white table cloth Indian place, but all the way in Bethesda, you might as well drive to North Rockville and hit up Minerva, which is the best Indian place in Montgomery County, IMO.

Wow this is a great and informative post. Props to the OP, who is clearly a fan of the HBO series The Wire, which I've heard is pretty good. I don't like violence or food very much, though.

Batik (SE Asian) at Kentlands in Gaithersburg

Except for Burma Road, Athens Grill, Jaymar Colombian Breeze, and Minerva, Batik is indeed the only cheap eats listing. Keep in mind that Washingtonian only surveys the area once every few years.

Restaurants in and around Amelia Island

I'm heading to Amelia Island in late February 2011...do these replies still hold true? Anything new I should know about?

Romance - Baltimore

OP said price is somewhat of a factor, so Charleston and Cinghiale are affirmatively out. Romance depends on the woman, not the man. My wife cares more about atmosphere than food, and I've found that most men agree that their women are the same. Maybe I'm wrong, but if that's the case here, you want to have dinner somewhere overlooking water. Water is reflective and contemplative, which are chief elements of romance. Many will balk when I say Rusty Scupper, because OMG it's not totally hipster, but it has an impressive wine list, you can get a great meal there, and it has the best view in Baltimore. If it was just about food, that would not be my choice, or even in my top ten, but the OP doesn't want a pissing contest about food, he wants romance. Take her to Rusty Scupper.

Help a NYer: Places to eat near Rockville/Gaithersburg

It's more proximity to where people have a relationship with the Chesapeake Bay. Obviously Towson is closer to the Chesapeake. Nobody in Montgomery County makes their living on the Chesapeake, and the crabs here are a joke compared to what you would get in Baltimore or Baltimore County.

West Baltimore hidden treasures, cheap eats

Mekong Delta is the best Vietnamese restaurant in America, and also cheap. You would be a fool not to go there.

Minerva Indian Cuisine - Rockville/Gaithersburg

It's probably the best overall joint in the 20877 area. It has incredible little sides that come with entrees and a great variety on the whole. The dosas are superb. I've never had a bad meal. Spice Xing is the only other place that can hold a candle to Minerva within striking distance. Bombay Bistro is really good but a little pricey for what you get.

Cornish Pasties in DC (or online)?

I'm also hunting for pasties in DC. Julia's Empanadas makes great empanadas, but they aren't quite the same as pasties. I used to eat them on the reg in the UK. I'll check out British Pantry and Wegmans.

Don't eat crabs anywhere this far from the water. If you must, get to Laurel or somewhere blue collar where people still go crabbing. If you are going to Baltimore, you can get great crab without going into the city. I recommend The Crack Pot in the Towson area.

Gaithersburg

My haunts:

Minerva for Indian (amazing little dips--like 6 of them!--that come with the entrees)

Acajutla for Mexican/Salvadorian (super cheap, quick, easy, great drinks, and just plain delicious)

Growler's for brewpub (beer brewed on-site, unlike Dogfish Head, delicious and quirky menu, neat atmosphere, bands on Friday nights)

New Fortune for Chinese (like a buffet that comes to your table...amazing atmosphere on the weekends when it's packed, but it's so huge it is never full)

La Fleur de la Canela for Peruvian (possibly the best Peruvian in the whole DC area, and cheap to boot)

South Street Steaks for cheesesteaks (best you'll have this far outside of Philly, that much I can guarantee)

Il Pizzico for italian (authentic two course structure and great little wine list, affordable too)

Manhattan Pizza for carryout or delivery (it's not New York, but it's consistently delicious and the delivery is very punctual)

Athens Grill for gyros and other Greek takeout (cheap, clean, easy and delicious)

Mayhan for kabob and such

Cava for Greek tapas

Vasilis for Greek, period.

That's all I can think of in Gaithersburg off the top of my head, although there are plenty of other random restaurants worth going to, depending on your palate.

Any Bacanora fans out there?

Unfortunately the chances of me making it to Sonora are about .01% given my geographic location and the drug wars going on down there. I might try to get a group of people together to order a case from hacienda los magueyes, but it might be impossible to get it shipped to the States. Any chance you could drop a bottle in the mail?

Any Bacanora fans out there?

I've been reading about bacanora in 2666, Roberto Bolano's epic posthumous novel "about" the Juarez murders. I am dying to try it. Is there anywhere in DC or Baltimore that carries it?
