Shoutouts in Barcelona
Spent only 3 days in Barcelona two weeks ago but wanted to give a shoutout to Montiel, Flassaders 19, in the Born. Just walked in for dinner. Freshest sardines escabeche, served with bits of toasted brown bread, sprouts--vinegar did not overwhelm fish; probably the best sardines I have ever eaten. Duck rillettes were served with both a fig compote and a chestnut spread--the chestnut-duck combo was almost unconquerably rich, but we managed. My favorite dish of the night was perfectly seared scallop and pork belly served with a pumpkin puree. Surf, turf, earth--great combo in texture and taste. Only disappointment was the tuna tartare with pine nuts--fish was undeniably fresh but lacked flavor/complexity. Nice wine list and wonderful service.
Shoutout also to the chocolatier Cacao Sampaka in Eixample. Breakfasted alongside the fur-wearing women of leisure as we sipped fabulous hot chocolate. Great chocolate assortments including the wild, not-your-mother's-See's "gastronomic innovations" with black olive, olive oil, and hazelnut-anchovy options. The milk chocolate orange blossom bar was delicate and aromatic without being overly sweet or cloying.
Duck's Feet at Dim Sum?
Yeah, my mom and auntie doubted that there would be much response but I told them to have faith in the 'hounds! It may be that duck feet aren't part of the dim sum repertoire any more. Maybe only a couple of food crazies--as deemed by spouses--are not enough to keep them on the menus. (I also once had a great stirred fried duck webs with green onions in NYC's Chinatown...bet that's gone away too.) Thanks for your tip, Hugh. We'll try Empress.
Duck's Feet at Dim Sum?
Grew up in LA but have spent the last 20 years in the Bay Area. Down here visiting family and want to take the aunties for dim sum. Are there any places in LA, Monterey Park, Alhambra, Arcadia that still serve the braised duck feet of yore? Thanks for your help!
