Sushi Dai, Sushi Bun and Daiwa Sushi are some of the best in Tsukiji!
Incoming Canadian Tourist!
Right sorry guys I'm just so absolutely excited about going to Italy that I forgot my manners ;) I'll be sure to do a thorough search first... Thanks guys for taking the time to enlighten me!
mbfant: By minimal I meant in comparison to Toronto's since only one day will pass before the whole page is inundated by posts! I didn't mean to be offensive =)
jen kalb: Your recs sound fabulous, I hope I get to go to them all!
Incoming Canadian Tourist!
I'm sad to see that the Italy board has such minimal posts!
Oh well, I'll venture to ask at the risk of receiving no response: where should a Canadian tourist eat in Rome and Vienna? I might possibly be in Italy and Austria for a week around the end of November / beginning of December and I was wondering what are some good eats? Thus far, I'm unsure of where I'll be staying and how I'll be travelling around, sorry if that makes it difficult for you guys...
I'm a fresh graduate and will be on a budget, so nothing too expensive and no tasting menus please. I eat pretty much anything and everything but I have a special spot for gelatos, pastries and cakes - recommendations for those would be great! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, all goes! Thanks everyone in advance, any help will be much appreciated =)
(PS. Anything else worth mentioning besides food - like sightseeing, galleries etc.?)
Eating London?
Hi,
Well it's been a few months since I've been in London, but from what I remember there are a few good ones. Keep in mind you can't compare London to Toronto, so if I say it's good, keep it in perspective:
CHEAP EATS
1) Thuan Kieu - Amazing Vietnamese food, in fact, better than any I've had in Toronto by far. This place is an absolute must if you like Vietnamese food!
2)Spageddy Eddy's - Dirt cheap pasta and for around $10 you get a HUGE bowl. Don't expect excellent quality, you go for the price and portion size!
MEDIUM/EXPENSIVE EATS
3) Cello Supper Club - $20 something entrees, it's fusion/contemporary food (the place also doubles as a lounge).. For the price point, the food is good and more on the 'hip' side.
4) Black Trumpet - More on the "pricier" side, the food is standard fare (read beef tenderloin, salmon, etc.) but at least it's tasty! Nice, cozy, and romantic restaurant
It's been a while so I can't recall much, but I'm sure there are many more places. Take a look at http://www.restaurantica.com/on/london for opinions on restaurants. Hope I was able to help a little!

Frank at the AGO?
Hi all,
Based on some previous recs, I went to Frank (the one inside AGO) for brunch and it was so spectacular, I made subsequent visits!
Anyways, what I really want to ask is, does anyone know if they're worth a visit for dinner? TIA!
Hashimoto fans - soon to be ANOTHER price increase!
Yes I agree, I'm so glad I got a chance to try it before the price increase! For $300 I could have many more meals at Kaji and Zen! Nonetheless, I stand by that the $200 I spent at Hashimoto was worth it seeing as I've never tried Kaiseki =)
As for the $300, I'm not positive where the money's going, to be honest!!
Hashimoto fans - soon to be ANOTHER price increase!
That's why I told everyone to go quickly BEFORE the price change - god knows an extra $100 for 8 dishes (possibly?) is an exorbitant amount to ask for!!
As for what you quoted on, notice the hah I added on the end - I realize the internet doesn't convey emotions entirely too well but it was really just a joke =) don't take it seriously... i'm sure it'd be like attempting to compare chinese in toronto to that of hong kong.
Hashimoto fans - soon to be ANOTHER price increase!
Yes you heard me right, get there fast Hashimoto fans because after the move to JCCC, prices will be increased to $300 pp! Of course that's all tentative but Hashimoto-san himself said that after the move, the space will be bigger (allowing double the amount now to be seated), more waiters will be hired and consequently, prices will be increased.
I just went a few days ago and I have to say that it was a whole new world to me! As various people have said, it's a totally different/unique experience from Kaji's. The food was simplistic yet utterly delicious - as someone mentioned, the food speaks for itself. I'll have to admit, I wasn't entirely full but it was most definitely worth the price tag. Apparently Hashimoto-san won third place (in Kyoto) in a japanese culinary arts competition and also achieved the Technique Award; who needs to go to Japan to have a taste of Kaiseki hah!
The atmosphere was just amazing and Hashimoto-san and Kei-san were an absolute delight to talk to: both were more than willing to educate. Although I won't be returning anytime in the near future, I strongly urge those who haven't been to go quickly and have yourself an unforgettable experience =)
Hashimoto will be moving to the JCCC
WHOA the price went up to $200!? I was hoping to eventually try Hashimoto after having a wonderful first visit at Kaji's (thoroughly enjoyed would be an understatement)... I suppose that will not be happening any time soon!
What I've been wondering is whether the food/experience even warrants the pricetag? For $200 i could go to Kaji twice. What do you guys think? Don't give me the "they are a different experience from one another"; if you were I would you pay Kaji another visit, or shell out the money for Hashimoto?
good macarons, seriously.
I've never had macarons from Paris but I've had from various locations in Toronto: Sweet Escape, Bamboche, David's Tea and Ruelo. Of the four Ruelo takes the win, with David's Tea running in second.
Ruelo makes their macarons fresh everyday, they sell fast and they're pretty busy. I've tried their Vanilla, Fleur de Sel Caramel, Passionfruit, Wasabi Grapefruit, Rose Lychee Raspberry and Pistachio Raspberry. They didn't all taste good but the texture was consistent: crispy exterior and soft chewy interior.
My favourite is the Wasabi Grapefruit, Rose Lychee Raspberry, and Sel Caramel. The wasabi grapefruit is VERY wasabi, I'd have to say leaning more towards wasabi than grapefruit. The rose lychee is quite strong in rose flavouring. These two had pieces of the corresponding fruit in the center (candied) yum!! The Sel Caramel was rich and buttery yet salty... heavenly!
My least favourite had to be the Pistachio Raspberry. It was somewhat artificial tasting and too grainy for my liking. Not bad, but not the best! I was told they make about 5 flavours each day at Ruelo, so you have to be lucky =) And they're not refridgerated, unlike David's Tea
Excellent brunch at School Bakery & Cafe
I wholeheartedly agree... The service was atrocious and they should be ashamed. The first time I went we waited a good 10 minutes before they even acknowledged our existence - even though we were clearly waiting to be seated. Not to mention there were barely any customers! The second time we waited about 5-10 minutes again; this time there were servers hurrying past us avoiding eye contact... They were NOT even understaffed so it's inexcusable.
Albeit the service, the food really was wonderful: my boyfriend had the Egg White Frittata with Shrimp while I had the Strawberry Shortcake Buttermilk Pancakes. Both were marvelous. The egg dish was fresh and the flavours blended nicely; the pancakes moist and stuffed with slices of strawberries between the layers, topped with a dollop of whipped cream. I would consider going again but the service is truly THAT horrendous that I hesitate.
PS: The food took 40 minutes to arrive... I think the server forgot about it haha. The tables around us that arrived later, got their food within 10 minutes of ordering. At least our server was nice!! Overall though, a frustrating experience.
