Stefano's Wood Burning Pizza and Tratoria Branchburg, NJ - meh
Our family of four went on Saturday night for an early dinner before heading to a show. We had a restaurant.com coupon for $25 off $35.....When we entered there was an unprofessional sign saying they were not honoring the certificates. If we had a receipt they would return our purchase price..really? Since we were pressed for time we ate anyway.
We had a garlic knots(burnt), salads, white pizza(undercooked), penne vodka(ok), chicken piccatta and veal saltimbocca(average). $80 later we were very underwhelmed and will not be returning. Even though the restaurant was 30% full the service was mediocre. This restaurant is still on restaurant .com.

One of the owners of Sublime read my comments and contacted us. He enticed my husband and I to give them another try. We went back on Friday night and agreed that it was well worth it!
We started with a drink in the bar. The bar was buzzing with people and a nice environment. We moved to our table for dinner. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. I started with the Crab and Avocado Salad (Jumbo lump blue crabmeat with avocado, red onion, cilantro and a lemon/thyme vinaigrette). It was full of crab and delicious. My hubby had the Thai Curried Mussels which I ate more of my share of.
On to our entrees. I had the Filet Mignon (Grilled 9oz. golden angus beef tenderloin wrapped in applewood smoked bacon over chipotle smashed potatoes with buttermilk hushpuppies and maple gastrique). The meat was done to perfection, tasty and tender. The sides were great. The portion was enormous and I brought the rest home. My husband had the Venison Osso Bucco (Rioja braised venison osso bucco over herbed reggiano polenta topped with buttermilk onion rings). Very tender meat with a rich and delicious sauce. Again, the side were very good.
A grapefruit ice for dessert was excellent and a perfect choice since we didn't have room for anything heavy.
I am really glad we tried it again. It was a huge turnaround. I hope our first experience was just a fluke.

My husband and I went Saturday night. We first went to the bar for a drink. They have 1/2 price beer, wine and apps in the bar from 5-7. The bar was lively. We ended up ordering a drink and the Thai Mussels. The bartender, who was sweet and very helpful, told us that the chef recommends shucking all of the mussels first so you can eat the mussels and broth like a soup. We followed the suggestion and they were delicious.
We moved to the dining room for dinner. Our waitress, Cathy, did not approach our table for quite a while, in fact, she approached the 4 top that was seated after us first. By the time she finally came over to take our drink order, we had been waiting for 15 minutes and were ready to order.
My husband order the short ribs (Burgundy braised beef shortribs served over yukon gold smashed potatoes with oven roasted root vegetables) and I ordered the scalloips (Pan seared diver sea scallops over truffled smashed potatoes with sweet creamed corn and fried leeks). The short ribs were not as tender as we would have liked. My scallops were overcooked. We both suspect that the potatos served with both dishes were the same.
Cathy did not return to check on us. She was disorganized in handling the check. She apologized and claimed having a blond moment.
Overall, go for the bar and apps and skip the meal.

Dining ideas near the Hotel Nelligan
My husband and I will be driving from NJ to Montreal in September for 5 nights to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We will be staying at the Hotel Nelligan. I have spent more time than I dare to admit reading the informative posts in this forum.
I made a list of restaurants that sparked my interest based on recommendations (Cafe Santropol, Yangtze, Olive et Gourmando, Fairmont Bagels, Laloux, Boustan, Petit Alep, Khyber Pass, Bahn Lao Thai). When I used Google Maps to see how far these were from our hotel, they are all between 3 and 8 kms. away. We will definately use public transportation or cabs to try some of these, but are there so recommendations within walking distance of the Nelligan? We enjoy almost all cuisines and we will be mixing price points.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have.

Crossing the US - Canada Border - Wine Limits?
My husband and I will be driving to Montreal from the US and spending 5 nights. Is there a limit to how much wine we can bring across the border? thanks in advance
Local Restaurants to the Wellmont Theater Montclair
We were just in Montclair to see David Gray at the Wellmont. Based on several reveiws my husband chose Ruthies BBQ ruthiesbbq.com. They specialize in BBQ and pizza. It was a nbeighborhood restaurant with a small but cute (diner style) seating BYOB. I had the Ruthies pizza and my husband had the ribs. My pizza with traditional toppings plus asiago was AWESOME. My husbands ribs were good, but the accompanying fires and slaw were AWESOME. This is a place to try. I will never look at fries again the same way. The owner was friendly and fun. Try it!
St Louis MO Recommendations
I am planning my first trip to St Louis MO in November. We are from NJ so I would like to avoid Italian which we have a lot of at home :). I will be travelling with my 14 YO son. We will be staying at the Hilton President in the Power and Light area. We will not have a car. We like steaks, BBQ and Chinese and are open to other ideas. I would like to avoid chains and over priced tourist traps.
I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.
Trinity in Keyport
Based on the recommendations here I selected Trinity for dinner last night. I have been following the comments on this restaurant and wanted to try it for a long time. We were a party of four and had a reservation. There were about 7 other tables all on the first floor. There was one waiter and one bartender.
We decided to start with several small offering for the table. When we inquired what chicharrones were, the waiter told us that they were anchovies which we opted not to order. I later found out that they are actually fried pork rinds.... We did have the Jersey Corn Fritters (excellent) and the Fresh French Fries with a Trio of dips (okay).
For entrees we had the Fennel Dusted Halibut, Crab Cakes, Corn and Tomato Risotto, and the Hukaliu Pot. I tried them all and they were all very good. I especially enjoyed the Hukaliu Pot. The spicy shrimp broth was fabulous.
The disappointment was the service. We were conversing and wanted a lesuirely paced meal, however, the waiter was overwhelmed. There were uncomfortable gaps in the service. Wine and water both went empty for long periods of time. No one checked to see if our meals were satisfactory until we were almost finished.
I promised to take my husband to Trinity for our anniversary at the end of August when they have music. I am now debating if I will return or choose another restaurant. Overall, very good food with spotty and inexperienced service.
