Gary's BBQ in Henderson had a very similar sauce. I believe they are closed now. The bottled Jim's Sauce from Durham is also quite similar.

Damn right about the value - two adult large bbq plates, hot dog & fries for the kid, plus drinks, a pint of q for home, bottle of sauce, and a quart of stewed tomatoes all for $34.

Totally agree with regard to Bubbas. Worst BBQ joint in NC. Seeing them in anyones best of OBX list is astounding.

Bubba's is definately the best New Jersey BBQ I've ever had. It's also the only New Jersey BBQ I've ever had. It may easily be the worst BBQ restaurant in NC. How they keep their health dept. rating I have no clue.
Authentic Food in NC Triangle Area
Mexican - Los Cuates, Super Taqueria, Taqueria Mi Pueblo.
Vietnamese - Pho Cali, Pho Far East.
BBQ - Backyard BBQ, Allen & Sons, Clyde Cooper's, Holden's.
Hot Dogs - Shorty's.
Doesn't get more authentic than that.

You should try them at Sonic. And they have nubile rollerskaters serving them.
Slaw dog
What are you eating, Stars hot dogs from Dollar General? Get some Brightleaf or Jesse Jones hot dogs.
I'm also a transplant (though certainly not a Yankee), but I've seen the light. An unnaturally red caseless hotdog with finely chopped slaw and some Texas Pete hot dog chili, plain-jane yellow mustard and minced vidalia is the penultimate hot dog experience. Shorty's in Wake Forest being a fine commercial example.

Island Grille in Atlantic Beach is superb. Best wahoo I've ever had in my life. Small but upscale.

No worries there. Plenty of room for people with low Q standards - more for me.
BBQ in Nags Head, NC
BBQ and decent sweet tea is almost nonexistant on the OBX. Bubbas doesn't even deserve to be called Q.

The fact that Danny's has held on so long is a testament to the fact that Cary is a containment area for relocated yankees (similar to that New Jersey BBQ they serve in Hatteras.) The man sneers at the regional style.
Do yourself a favor and drive a ways toward Durham, and eat at Backyard BBQ.
Best Greens in Durham, NC?
I second (or third) the Backyard BBQ recommendation. All their food is consistently excellent. Their candied yams are off the chart.
