Fun places for girls night out

Carnevale

Afternoon tea with an 11 year old- NOT downtown

The Celtic Knot in Evanston has alovely afternoon tea a couple of times a week (Wed/Sat), complete with tiny sandwiches, devon cream, and individual teapots. I always have liked it as a more genteel, gracious way to spend an afternoon. Might fit the bill...
And the street parking is pretty good, or Whole Foods next door has roof top parking and an elevator.

Where in the world is Donatella?

Thanks, Jay, for posting this. We heard about this tragedy, and still have a hard time driving down Sherman and Howard.
We'll miss her, too. Would that everyone made such a wonderful and enthusiastic imprint on the world!

Help with Chicago beer scene?

The Clipper is a great local, and I happily recommend it for drinks.

Went to Rootstock Wednesday night. Astounding well-planned wine list, particularly for such a small place. We didn't try any beers, so I can't help there.
Very nice 3 cheese/3 meat tray for appetizer; each held its own, with some sweet/savory to offset.
I had the pork, served on a base of nicely grilled squash - very well done. My partner had the mussels, which he said were large and lovely (happy sighs). The other three of us reported good things, too.
The only hiccup was the long wait for a table, but the staff was exceptionally gracious about it, and balanced seating us with not rushing anyone (as far as we could tell).

Top 3 healthy dishes in Chicago?

I can' t think of three off the top of my head. I'm on no carbs at the moment. When we dropped by Franks & Dawgs a while back, I thought I'd be drinking water, or a bunless dog (urg!). They had a brussel sprout salad, though, so I ordered that. It was delicious!!! Raw shaved BS, pistachios, and maybe some mint...

Tripe!

Thank you both! Funny, we shop ay Marketplace on Oakton all the time, but hadn't thought of that!?! And Cermak Produce is known too. We'll try both!

Tripe!

After reading a lovely thread here on CH, we now have a hankering for tripa alla romana. We know versions can be had at some real italian restaurants in town, but will be making it "da vero" at home. Does anyone know where we can buy tripe in Chicago? If options are available, we live in Skokie...

Hub or Wife away? Now You Can Saute'!

What a delight reading this thread - truly inspiring! Now, all I can think about is pate, and tongue, and trippa alla romana(!), and roasted garlic, and dogs with gorgonzola..
My only problem is that while we're both foodies - HE's the cook. If he goes out of town, I'm stuck with my own lame cooking. But I do think pate is on the menu for next time - even I can make that!

Looking for Jaw of fish cooked at Sushi Restatruant

Another with a lovely whole fish is Hana Bistro at about 9400 Skokie Blvd. (above Dempster).

Good Food and Beer in the Suburbs

The Stockholm in Geneva brews its own beers (and root beer). I only have limited experience; the one time we were out there for dinner, the food was very good, and the beer was excellent. Look up www.stockholmsbrewpub.com for menus, beer lists, etc.

Burgers on the North Shore?

I'm seconding this! The buffalo burger (animal, not pseudo-chicken wings) is really nice. Harms Road is definitely our favorite. And yes, there is a patio out back.

Help needed for husband's 40th birthday

Hugo's Frog Bar might be nice. It's on Rush, not far from your hotel, and has a good food and a nice patio.

Help with finding good Asian restaurants in Northern Evanston/Wilmette area (Thai, Indian, Japanese, etc)

One of our favorites is Hana Bistro. Wide range of very nice food, from sushi to Mongolian. Attentive service, distinctly non-mall ambiance.

Looking for good restaurant for son's 16th BDay

If you want casual Italian with decent food and lots of life, try Quartino's on State and I think Ohio. In your price range, so no restrictions.

Breakfast in the Gold Coast

Yes, I think that's it. right intersection, northeast corner. thanks

help finding good ethnic restaurants in the North Shore

Absolutely agree!

Breakfast in the Gold Coast

at State and Chestnut, there's a basic, good food family-run (or it seems) place. Hearty food with lots(!) of choices. I've been here before business meetings often, and have been able to read notes or prepare with little interruption, while still having coffee refreshed. don't know the name offhand.

In that case, try the Himalayan Restaurant on Golf at Milwaukee, beside the IDOT office. Awful location. Very good Himalayan food. Attentive, welcoming service.

REAL fudge recipes?

I know I'm coming in after the thread seems done, but here is my family's recipe (just for the fun of it), complete with family-style notations:

Chocolate Fudge

Makes: about 1 pound
Start to finish: 30 minutes

Quantity Measurement
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup whole milk
1/4 cup corn syrup
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup cocoa unsweetened

1. Combine everything but the cocoa in a large iron skillet. Simmer over medium-high heat.
2. When the butter melts, and the bubbles become small, homogenous and grouped in rather largish humps (you’ll know it when you see it!), quickly add the cocoa.
3. Turn the heat down to medium. Watching, but not stirring too much, let boil to the softball stage.
4. Remove from heat, and beat with a wooden spoon until the surface takes on a glassy, glossy appearance. This means approximately eleven minutes of beating, so be patient! Pour quickly into a greased, 8-inch square pan. Score, and put in fridge to cool.
5. To remove from pan, cover with a plate, and flip quickly. If necessary, tap gently on the bottom of the pan. Break the fudge along score lines.

Marzipan in Chicago?

Any Cost Plus store has it, in bars for cooking, and pig shaped (for good luck) or fruit shaped (for treats.

Toronto Foodies Coming to Chicago

from a fellow Canadian (came from Toronto 20 years ago):

first - skip Chinatown. having three different Chinatowns in Toronto, all with excellent (and lesser) options, you'll be sorely disappointed by the four square blocks offered here. I've gone back periodically, hoping its improved, but you'll never find anything near the standard you're used to.

deep dish pizza - if you must, go "iconic," as chicgail mentions. while not to my taste, it certainly is a meal that is part of Chicago (although, for the record, I MUCH prefer Pequod's on Clybourn)

comfort food - my current favorite is a hole-in-the-wall due west of downtown at Chicago and California called Feed. Great greens, mac & cheese, etc. Too late in the season for the backyard, alas. This area is what Queen St. W. was, back when artists could afford to live there. Cheap, basic, excellent food (menu on their website

One Sister Underground‏??

Just found this, at the end of the dailycandy article quoted by dautcalm:

For reservations, call 773-598-0602 or e-mail onesisterinc@gmail.com, $90 suggested donation, plus gratuity. Upcoming dinners take place on June 11, 12, 25, and 26

good restaurants nearish to Skokie?

I guess I missed you, since this is Monday morning. Next time, try the Charcoal Oven (odd name; doesn't seem to have anything to do with the place itself). It's been there 60 years for good reason, and in the same family. The fish is excellent, and we've sometimes found it easiest to let the owner "do" the rest of the meal's choices. The details (hot buttered bread, for instance) are considered important. Feel treated, eat very well, and stay local.
BTW, looks like a road house from the outside - don't be dissuaded.

Where in the world is Donatella?

I am so psyched!!! I hope she has her cream of mushroom soup (yes, that's what I said) on the menu. Ooo, oooo, ooooooo!

Va Pensiero Evanston Restaurant

so much for my Groupon coupon...!
More seriously, though, this is a tragic thing. I hope we find out where Jeff Muldrow lands, when he does. Many thanks for those years, sir.

Canadian Bar(s) in Chicago?

I'm on board, too! I'm a fellow ex-pat looking for real football, and curling, and good beer, etc.etc. And oh, poutine would be great!

Who has the Best Po-Boys in South Mississippi?

I always liked Lil' Rays in Gulfport, down by the coast. Sitting here in a north Illinois winter makes the memory of those fried oyster po' boys "real sharp"! Try them, and let me know they survived Katrina intact.

Licorice (liquorice) allsorts are gone this year! Help!

I know it is only 2 days to Christmas. I assumed I'd be able to walk into my local Home Economist or even Jewel to get my annual boxes of allsorts candy. Well, HE is closing in a week(!) and has almost nothing left, and Jewel says they can't get the President's Choice brand this year.
Any ideas? North/NW suburbs, but I'm willing to drive if I need to.
[Interesting corollary - the whole web doesn't seem to have a recipe that doesn't start with buying the allsorts first!]

Italian in North Suburbs

ahhhh - I miss Donatella!

Cheescake toppings

squares of good, dark chocolate
strawberry halves on a piece of mint leaf
