Relatively inexpensive places to eat near Toronto General Hospital

I ate there 2 days ago, so unless they've closed since then, I think they're still open. They were temporarily closed for a couple of weeks this summer for maintenance to their pipes. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

There' Somethin 2 Talk About on Gerrard just West of Bay. About a minute walk away from the Elizabeth St. side. Delicious, healthy wraps. There's a tiny seating area in the back and an equally tiny patio. If they're both full, there's a small courtyard next door.

Thanks for these suggestions. I had forgotten about PHC. I may need to rework the budget for Scaramouche :) but you're right, it would be a treat!

ISO restaurant with lake view and/or patio for birthday lunch. Against the Grain? Others?

I've been looking for a restaurant in Toronto to have a surprise birthday lunch for my mother and 9 others. She loves being close to the lake, so a place with a lakefront patio or at least view would be great.

I've done some searching and I keep coming up with Against the Grain, but it seems like the food and service are hit and miss.

Has anyone eaten there recently? Have things improved? Am I missing other restaurants in my search?

Thanks for your help!

4 of us girls are looking for a place to have dinner before heading to Yuk Yuks. I'd love to go to the Fifth, but we'll only have an hour and a half and I'm worried that might not be enough time.
A pub or bistro might be nice (with a patio?? Summer's too short to spend it inside!)
tx!

Cheese fondue--anyone tried Beer Bistro's or Carin's recently?

We were at Caren's last night. We didn't have the fondue but saw that others had ordered it. Looked good!

Afternoon tea for a bridal shower - help!

There's a place in the west end at Burnhamthorpe and Martingrove - I think it's called Victorian Tea Garden.

Prix Fixe in the west end?

We're looking for suggestions for a restaurant in the west end (Bloor West, High Park, Roncey) for Friday night - preferably somewhere offering a prix fixe menu.
A great patio would be a bonus!
Thanks!

What was your favourite restaurant that went downhill after they solidified their status

Apache burger - quality seemed to take a nosedive right around the time that they renovated.

Hors d'œuvre pairing with wine

Thanks for the suggestions whiner - will definitely include those, and for the link RicRios.
I probably should have phrased my question differently - we're hoping to have some kitchy pairings i.e. bruschetta with the italian chianti, maybe some mini elk burgers with the cabernet - that sort of thing.
So maybe what I am really asking is if anyone knows of a few good Australian and Spanish appetizers :)

Ontario Wine Tasting Best Bets?

I hope this reply is not too late for you. My husband and I often take a Saturday trip to that area. You must try to visit Cattail Creek and Lailey Vineard in Niagara on the Lake. They're two of the smaller vineards but they have excellent wines. You may also want to try Rancourt. They have some of the oldest vines in the area there is real history there. I hope you get to speak with Mme Rancourt if you go. We've actually not had great experiences at Stratus. You might also want to take a trip to the "Bench" - a region just outside of Niagara on the Lake near Beamsville. It's no more than a 30 minute drive away from Niagara on the Lake I think. Kacaba Vineards has some great stuff.

As for restaurant recommendations, Stone Road Grille is fabulous. It looks like nothing from the outside (in a strip mall), but the atmosphere on the inside is both funky and warm. The food is incredible and you might get some ideas for vineards to visit as they have a great selection of local wines.

Hope you have a great trip!

Hors d'œuvre pairing with wine

Hello all - I need a bit of advice for some simple hors d'oeuvre pairings with wines from different regions around the world. I have the cheeses covered and we'll have bread and crackers, but I was hoping to get ideas for a typical hors d'oeuvre from that region to go along with the wine.

We plan to have 1 cabernet and 1 reisling from the Niagara Region in Canada, 1 shiraz and 1 chardonnay from Australia, 1 bordeaux or burgundy and 1 chablis from France, 1 merlot from California, 1 chianti from Italy, and 1 tempranillo from Spain or Portugal.

All suggestions apppreciated - tx!
