Looking for a good okonomiyaki/yakitori restaurant

So what's the big difference?

Looking for a good okonomiyaki/yakitori restaurant

Really I thought Yakitori Taisho is supposed to be one of the best authentic yakitori places in NYC.

What do you mean by too austere?

Looking for a good okonomiyaki/yakitori restaurant

I know Aburiya Kinnosuke isn't a Yakitori place. It's a robata place. Who cares. They're both Japanese style charcoal grilled meat with sweet Japanese BBQ sauce.

Looking for a good okonomiyaki/yakitori restaurant

Hakata Tonton makes excellent okonomiyaki with pig's feet. As for Yakitori, Yakitori Toto, Yakitori torys and Aburiya Kinnosuke are all very good. I've also heard that Yakitori Taisho and Tori shin are excellent.

Although, I'm not sure if these places will work well for 15 people, because they are all very small. All of the really good authentic Japanese restaurants in NYC are very small.

Okonomiyaki in NYC?

Hakata Tonton makes awesome okonomiyaki with pig's feet. It blows the water out of Otafuku's okonomiyaki.

Yakitori Toto, Yakitori Taisho, and Tori shin.

Which one of these places do you think is the best?

What should I order at Aburiya Kinnosuke?

What do you mean by a whole spectacle?

What should I order at Aburiya Kinnosuke?

Have you been to Inakaya? If so, do you think the quality is better then Ak?

What should I order at Aburiya Kinnosuke?

I've only been to Aburiya Kinnosuke once. Me and my brother shared about 15 dishes and we both thought they were really incredible. we especially liked the tsukune and I haven't had it anywhere else in NYC near as good.

You don't seem to be too high up on Aburiya Kinnosuke. I'm wondering what Japanese restaurants in NYC do you think are much better than Aburiya Kinnosuke?

Shochu Bar

Maybe Hakata Tonton.

Takoyaki?

Last winter I had excellent takoyaki at Shiki. I'm not sure if they still serve it though.

Mitarashi Dango?

Does any one know if there is anywhere that has freshly made mitarashi dango?

Mitarashi Dango?

I mean fresh as in freshly made

Sofra recommendations

My favorite thing there is the shawarma. Whatever you do, just don't order the kataif. It's near inedible.

Japanese Grocery in Brookline Village

Do you know the name of the store?

Visiting Manhattan.

Maybe I was being bit too dramatic using the word outstanding. I'm just looking for somewhere really good.

Visiting Manhattan.

I will soon be visiting Manhattan for only one day. I'm looking for a really outstanding authentic non sushi Japanese restaurant.

so far I've been to Yakitori Toto, Aburiya Kinnosuke, Yakitori Torys, Sakagura, Tsukushi and Ariyoshi on East 53rd street.

What do you guys think is the best or one of the best places other than any of the ones that I've been to?

Kajitsu?

What do you guys think of Kajitsu?

really good Kanafeh?

Were would you say has the best kanafeh?

really good Kanafeh?

You've had good kanafeh at sofra? I've tried it there a few times but each time it was damn near inedible.

First, they didn't put any syrup on it so it was really dry.
second, they didn't use a kanafeh type of cheese. the taste of the cheese was more like a cheese cake.
Third, they put way too much cheese on it and not enough kataifi pastry. it should be mostly the pastry and then a thin layer of cheese. Also, it tasted very stale and soggy and it was also warmed up very unevenly.

If you say it was so good, maybe I just had a few unlucky bad experiences and it'sbetter sometimes.

I'm interested to hear how your experiences were.

By the way, kanafeh and kadaif are exactly the same thing. There are various names for it throughout the middle east and the Mediterranean.

really good Kanafeh?

Thanks, but I don't think I would want to get such a large amount.

really good Kanafeh?

I've tried it a couple of times in Arax , but I've never had it really good there.

really good Kanafeh?

Does anyone know of there are any places that have really great fresh kanafeh.

I've tried it in Sofra, the markets in Watertown, and Shawarma King. It never seems to be fresh in any of these places.

authentic non sushi Japanese restaurants

I think Oiishi and O Ya fail to capture the true spirit of Japanese food thus making them inauthentic.

I think Oiishi misses a lot of the gentle subtleties that make true Japanese food so special. I also think the food is way too grandiose (this seems to happen whenever Chinese people are cooking Japanese food) to be called authentic Japanese food. However I must admit the quality of the sushi is excellent. I also think Oiishi's ultra modern sterile decor is very unjapanese and I don't mean that because they don't have some cheesy lanterns and Japanese art.

Aside from what I already said about O Ya, I think they have way too much wagyu beef. Whenever a fine dining or high end Japanese restaurant wants to have a Japanese entree, they always put wagyu beef on the menu. As if that is the only special thing in the Japanese cuisine. Pure ignorance.

AS I'm sure you are aware of, wagyu is not used all that often in Japan.

authentic non sushi Japanese restaurants

What I mean is that all the places that have been mentioned seem to have variations on what pretty much all Japanese restaurants have. For example tempura, teriyaki, sukiyaki, katsu noodle soups and so on.

Maybe the food in the places that have been mentioned have a great unique quality from the masses of Japanese restaurants, I don't know. All what I'm saying is by looking at the menus they don't look all that special

If you would like to see some Japanese restaurants' menus that have far more depth then the ones that have been mentioned, then check out the following menus in some of the places I've been to in NYC. Aburiya kinnoseke, Yakitori toto, Sakagura, Ariyoshi on E. 53rd St.

Oishii and O Ya are both very unauthentic especially O Ya

High end wagashi

Do you mean Minamoto Kitchoan?

High end wagashi

Does anyone know if there is anywhere that has high end wagashi in the area

authentic non sushi Japanese restaurants

All the restaurants you guys have mentioned seem to have pretty meager menus and not that much variety. Does anyone know of any places that have more depth to their menus?
