Sunday lunch/brunch in Montreal?
I will be in Montreal from 11am-2:30pm this sunday. Was looking for a good French place for lunch/brunch. I am not a fan of typical breakfast/brunch foods including pastries/breads/egg dishes and would prefer standard lunch fare (but on Sunday). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
"Five hour duck" recipe for small goose?
We have a small farm-raised goose to roast for Christmas dinner. The goose is about 7lbs dressed and since it is of similar size to a duck, I thought it might be a candidate for the 5 hour duck recipe (http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/The-Amazing-Five-Hour-Duck) that has been discussed on chowhound. Should we anticipate any problems trying this? Are there any modifications we should consider? Any advice would be appreciated.
One day in Chicago-- Looking for advice
Would love to hear more specific comments on Salpicon and how it compares with others mentioned above.
One day in Chicago-- Looking for advice
I've done a little more research on some of mexican places you have commented on. One of them seems to be not too far from Hot Chocolate--Fuego Mexican Grill. Do you still recommend this place relative to others you mentioned above? What would you order? Do I need a reservation early (6pm) on a friday.
One day in Chicago-- Looking for advice
Fellow chowhounder from Singapore here. Trying to construct a one day chicago foodfest and wanted to get your thoughts. Timing is a friday in late August.
Lunch: Hot Doug's (ona friday, when can I go to avoid massive lines)
Dinner: Zocalo or Frontera (or is there another option closer to loop/River north)
Dessert: Hot Chocolate (via brown line; do I need a reservation on a Friday night for dessert)
Any other thoughs/suggestions would be appreciated.
Looking for in depth pizza comparision between Lou Malnati's, Giordanos. Due's and Gino's East
I'm a singapore-based chowhound in town in for one day and am looking for an in depth discussion of the best deep dish pizza places. My only experience to date was Gino's which I liked but having read the boards I get the feeling that there are better options out there. I am looking for the best pizza with the best quality sausage (no other toppings). Any guidance would be appreciated.
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
Well, I see my back up to MC has changed again. I'll probably get take out molotes on Sunday in any case...
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
I'll make sure and call MC first on the morning of.
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
I love sopes, but I went their website www.sazonlatinfusion.com and I didn't see them on the menu. I assume I can just order them? I'll get the barbacoa.
Strange to see things like Mofongos. I guess I don' t know what kind of carribean food exists in LA.
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
On your advice, my plan is to be at Mariscos Chente at 11:45 on Monday, September 28th.
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
Any recs from La Huasteca if I don't get the chiles en nogada? Also I am going to go with your suggestion of takeout from Cinco Puntos.
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
If I were to go to Huasteca, then what would you recommend?
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
I have to get the rental car back to LAX by 1:30 so I will call them to ask about hours. If any hounds want to join for lunch at 11:30 or 11:45 assuming they are open please join. I think my backup will be Tacomiendo as it's close by. I am thinking I don't want to risk driving farther than westside for lunch.
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
Based on the comments I have revised the itinerary:
Saturday:
Lunch- Moles La Tia
Dinner- La Castia or La Huasteca
Sunday:
Lunch- Grand Central Market
Dinner- Antequera de Oaxcana
Monday:
Breakfast- Pepy's Galley (Chilaquiles)
Lunch- Mariscos Chente
I'd like to be able to get to Babita but I can't be all the way out in San Gabriel on Saturday or Sunday night. I am going to try either La Huasteca or La Casita. Which one should I visit, particularly if I want to get the Chiles en Nogada?
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
On the way back I only need to get to LAX by 12:30 so if the 105 is ok, then would you think La Huasteca is a possibility?
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
I'll check out El Tepeyec.
Very sad to hear that Monte Alban has closed down. Where am I going to get my molotes?
As good as MC sounds, I get so much good seafood where I am now that I am drawn to other flavors.
How about La Huasteca? Would it be possible to get from Mar Vista out to La Huasteca and back by 12:30 pm or so given an 8am breakfast at Pepe's? And what should I get if I go? Seems like I could just head up the 105 at around 10am though I have no idea what traffic is like.
LA "Serious" Mexican Trip-- Additional Suggestions?
I've been lurking on this board the past year or so gleaning tips on where to get some good mexican food in LA. I live in Asia where there is zero mexican food worth considering (even in Tokyo which seems to have something quite good for just about any other cuisine).
I've based a lot of the following itinerary on the "Mexican in LA for Serious/Old Line" Chowhounds but as I look at the list I have now, it's tilted toward Oaxacan (which isn't a bad thing). I'd wouldn't mind adding a few more spots to the list but they would need to be close to where I'll be (Saturday Eastside), (Sunday- downtown and central) (Monday- Westside).
Current Plan
Saturday:
Lunch- Cinco Puntos
Dinner- Moles La Tia
Sunday:
Lunch- Grand Central Market
Dinner- Antequera de Oaxcana
Monday:
Breakfast- Pepy's Galley (Chilaquiles)
Lunch- Monte Alban
So that's three Oaxacan dinners in row. Any other options worth considering? I should say that despite the many seemingly great mariscos places I would rather focus on other kinds of food given how good the seafood is where I currently live.
Kansas City BBQ open before 11am
I have a 12:20 pm flight out of Kansas City on a monday morning and am looking to hit a bbq place before heading back to another year in a land with no BBQ (singapore). I am looking for a place that either a) opens at 10am, or b) opens at 10:30 am and is near the airport.
Any help from local chowhounds would be appreciated.
Great Bakeries in Washington D.C. and area
The best cakes and cupcakes I have found in the DC area is Cakesplus in Laurel (located in a strip mall off MD 198 near the BW Parkway). Better than decent alternatives in the DC, and far far better than the lamentable Cakelove.
Good places for brunch in Alexandria
It's not traditional "brunch" food, but the Sunday buffet at Bombay Curry Company is fantastic. 11:30-2pm.
What to get at Pyramid?
Going tonight with two friends. The bistilla is a given. I am big fan of Tfaya and wonder if it is on the menu. What else is recommended?
Earth to Tyler Cowen ...
They mention a new Burmese restaurant, PEACOCK, that specializes in Shan State dishes. Has anyone tried it yet?
Italian Sausage in Frederick or Hagerstown
I am looking for a good source for homemade sausage in the Frederick or Hagerstown areas. Any help would be appreciated.
Veg-friendly japanese?
The Yu-Tofu dish at Sushi Kappo Kawasaki on 19th St between L and M is outstanding. Best tofu I have had in the DC area.
Ban Thai, Baltimore - thumbs down
Just about any thai restaurant CAN make the food more like what you would find in thailand, and it is not only just the heat. Many are reluctant to use enough fish sauce, gapi (shrimp paste) and other strong flavors that you would typically find. However, if you can convince them that you like the "real" thai flavor, you can usually come out with something much better. My wife is thai, and she always asks them in thai to make it the "real" way. Even without her along, I can usually succeed as well. The salads in particular places like Thai Square and Ruan Thai become less sweet, with stronger fish sauce.
If you have been to thailand, you might consider mentioning that and arguing your case. Throwing out phrases like "gin aharn pet dai" (I can eat spicy) might help as well.
DC Chowhound looking for good places to stop between Madison and Green Bay
Going to be in Madison this weekend and heading up to Green Bay to tour the stadium. Wanted to know of any good places to stop on drive back to Madison.
Donuts more like Coffee 'An's: Luke's or Elmwood Bakery
I am trying to hit a good CT donut shop around 1pm on the way to the cape and have narrowed the search (for geographical reasons) to Luke's in Avon or Elmwood Bakery. Which do you consider to be closer to a standard cake donut at Coffee 'An's in Westport?
Donuts in Eastern Connecticut
Well, it could be around Hartford at 1pm. Is there anything around Hartford that might work?
Off menu items at Myanmar
I would tell them that (eating fish sauce). Tell them you like "gapi" the thai version of shrimp paste, and that you have been to Thailand (or even Burma). Also tell them you won't be disappointed or send it back. Then say "Chey Zu Bey" (rhymes with They You Hey), meaning thank you. Maybe they will relent. When I first went there they couldn't understand why I would want to eat goat.
Also, you can request the pork curries to be with pork belly (or "pork with fat" as they call it) which is more traditional.
