The Great Indian Food Journey [from UK/Ireland board]

Dear All,

This September I will be embarking on a journey across India using a rather unlikely mode of transport- The Autorickshaw. My journey starts in Goa and ends in Nepal. I will be passing through the following states- Goa, Maharashtra,Gujrat,Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and will include halts at all the major great indian 'food cities', apart from Kolkata. I will be passing through Bombay, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jaipur, Delhi, Lukhnow and Benares.

The main intention, apart from seeing the country and staying alive on the dangerous highways, will be to sample the food of every region I will be passing through.

I'm from India, but I haven't even gotten around to seeing half the country in my 26 years of existence. Besides i've spent the last 5 years in London, so I feel like i'm a bit out of touch. So while I do know a few things about what to do and where to go in order to sample the best, there is a lot I do not know.

Hence I am posting this well in advance, so that I can draw up a list from all your recommendations. I'm posting this on the U.K site as I feel confident that a lot of you have been to places I haven't and i'm sure there will be some gems on the list!

I hope there wil be a fair few replies!

Regards

Best Turkish food in London?

Try Gallipoli's Cafe in Angel-it is a mixture of Turkish and Lebanese cuisine but don't be put off by that. The food is really nice. Again good but not something you will be telling your grandchildren about!

Quilon

Wow! Thanks for that Peter. The Bebinca (was it called bibaica on the menu?) looks delicious!
Definitely looks like it's worth a visit.

Indian in London--seeking recs for New Yorkers

The East Ham branch of Sarvanna Bhavan is superb. The cheapest and most satisfying South Indian meal you will have. The idlis are soft and the best you will find in London and I recommend the onion, tomato and chilli utthappam! It's to die for.

Quilon

Yeah he did, and his review wasn't very good!

Quilon

Hi Peter,
Your blog looks really interesting. I came across the post about bagels in New York. When you're in London, if you haven't tried it already, head to the Brick Lane Beigel Bakery. It's a fantastic old place with the chewiest beigels you will find.

Keralan cuisine is one of my favourites as well!

Quilon

This is officially my first post on Chowhound! Such a pity i've only discovered it now in my last couple of months in London! But then I only came across 'Eat My Globe' today. Incidentally, I was sitting in the Foyles Cafe in Tot Court Road and perusing the first few pages of Simon Majumdar's book (and looking forward to the rest of it), when I came across Chowhound! Also it inspired me to go to Neal's Yard in Covent Garden and pick up some creamy goat's cheese and oatcakes, which I am eating as I write. Goat's cheese and oatcakes with some honey! Divine! Simon if you are around...thank you!

Also I wanted to find out if anyone has been to the restaurant 'Quilon', a 'South Indian' restaurant which recently won a Michelin star! I'm from the South Indian town of Bangalore and found it quite interesting that Quilon has managed to break the mould of the ubiquitous 'Chicken Tikka Masala', in the U.K!

Fish and Chips - the best?

The best Fish 'n' Chips i've ever had was in the small fishing town of Mallaig...at the end of 'The Road to the Isles' up in Scotland...place called the 'Cornerstone.' It was so good that I had to ward off flocks of gulls who wanted a bite as I sat by the pier and gorged into the crisp but soft and chunky chips and the divine fish, freshly caught. Could almost taste the sea in it!
