I don't know if you are in center city or the suburbs, but Blue Dog Pub in Lansdale had the Deschutes mirror pond (pale ale) on draft.

Lansdale Farmers Market Bars Alice Bakery

I'm extremely disappointed in this decision by Lansdale FM. My wife and I live 2 blocks from the FM and we hit it at least 2, 3 times a month. I don't ever recall the Alice tent missing from the market as many times as was noted in their "evidence" to reject Alice's entry. Dennis has consistently made the best quality pastries and breads in the area, and I wouldn't be surprised if the FM suffers because of their decision to bar Alice from their premises.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tabora had an influence in the decision, I remember asking Dennis during his first year why he didn't have any of his wonderful cupcakes for sale at the market, and he said there were certain "rules" that he had to abide by. Basically, since another vendor was selling certain sweets, he wasn't allowed to. However, that other vendor was still allowed to sell their bread products, so who knows what the actual rules were. Although my wife and I are in walking distance to the Lansdale FM, I'm fairly certain we'll be visiting it less frequently this year. It's definitely not one of the best farmers markets around, and my wife and I visit a lot of the local FMs for quality produce and goods. We love visiting Dennis and his staff at his brick and mortar establishment in North Wales, it's a very inviting, comfortable place, and I urge all of you to make the drive if you can. Good to hear Ambler is having a FM, we won't mind making the drive to check out that place too!

Good luck Dennis! You don't need the Lansdale Farmers Market. Go ahead and try and get into one of the other local farmers markets and get your tasty treats out to more customers who might not be aware of your quality products!

Gilbertsville Tea room - has anyone been and used a Groupon Voucher?

Purchased a Groupon for this tea room a while back and had tried in the past to book a reservation, but she was either full or away on vacation for the dates we had requested. Not a problem, we had plenty of time to pick a date. So today, when my wife tried to make a reservation, the lady on the phone was extremely rude and unprofessional. When my wife inquired about a reservation for the upcoming weekend because we had a Groupon voucher we wanted to use, she basically made a comment that "all you people with those Groupon vouchers leave reservations to the last minute just so you can use it before it expires. You can either come Friday November 16 at 11am or else email Groupon and get your money back. I don't get much out of it anyway." What lovely customer service. Yes, we were trying to use it before it expired, but to make a comment like that was uncalled for, seeing as we weren't trying to use it before the voucher was valid or after it had already expired. So my wife talked to a friend who had just gone to this place, and the review wasn't great - fabulous decor, but terrible slow service and mediocre food. So yes, madam tea lady, I will be calling Groupon to request a refund, thanks for the advice. You saved us some money and time that we might have either spent at your establishment being less than inspired by all that your tea room has to offer. Hopefully other people have had pleasant experiences or I don't know how long this place will stay open, seeing as they are able to just turn away business with their rude attitude. Or perhaps she's just allergic to Groupons. If Groupon isn't working out for you financially, then don't sign your business up for the vouchers.

Shellfish Sue (Lansdale)

My wife and I stopped in this evening for a quick bite. The decor is nothing special, some high top tables and a few low-top 4 seaters, but we weren't there for the decor. The menu consists of items like mussels, fish and chips, crab cakes, crab legs, and sandwiches. I had the chesapeake crab cake special (all claw meat, there is also an all lump crab version) which came with freshly made fries. My wife had the fish and chips, which is customizable (pick either catfish, tilapia, or cod and your selection of tartar sauce) and is made with a tempura batter. The fish and chips was $10 and the crab cake was $9. Both meals were freshly made and very tasty. The owner Rene stopped over to introduce himself and frequently stopped by to inquire if we needed anything. We found him very personable and someone who took pride in his food. The pickles, slaw, and potato salads are all homemade and we enjoyed all of them. The menu prices were about $9-15 for entrees and $5 for sides. Drinks were self-serve from the cooler in the back.

This is definitely a no-frills place, the focus is on the food, and we enjoyed it. It is also a BYO, so feel free to bring a bottle of wine or a six-pack of beer to enjoy with your meal! Rene noted that for only being open for 2 weeks, business is fairly brisk and he can't complain. We missed out on the lobster mac and cheese, so apparently you need to get there early to get some, as it appears to be one of their best sellers. Open until 9pm Tues-Sat, only until 5pm on Mondays, and closed Sundays.

We will definitely be back, as we loved the food, and we can't wait to try some of the other items on the menu! We hope this business thrives in downtown Lansdale, as it provides a much needef jolt to the main street area! We already envision ourselves having dinner at Shell.Fish.Sue, dessert at Tabora, and an after-dinner drink at Round Guys Brewery, all within the span of a few blocks!

Anyone been to Round Guys Brewing Co. in Lansdale?

I stopped in last weekend with a friend. Tried their 4 beer sampler to find out what I might like of their beers, and really liked the black IPA. Atmosphere was pretty laid-back, I don't think a lot of people know about this place yet. Accomodations are a bit sparse, just a bar, some tables, a few TVs, and a huge window along the back of the bar showing their brewing vats and equipment. Service was a bit slow, but I expect it to get better the longer they are open. The menu was very limited, from soft pretzels (from the pretzel place next door, I presume) and hot dogs, although they were serving a special grilled cheese sandwich that evening. If you just need a little something to snack on, there is always the free popcorn machine in the corner! Glad to have this microbrewery in town! Along with Tabora and the new seafood restaurant, things are looking up in Lansdale!

Key Limes

The Quakertown Market had them a few weeks ago as well. Not sure if they stock them all the time (probably not), but they were of good quality and cheap when I was there. Good luck!

Alice Bakery and Confectionary at 129 South Main Street in North Wales

My wife and I have been making it a weekend tradition to stop in for a pastry and cup of coffee for the past month or so, after hearing about this place here on Chowhound. We LOVE this place, the entire staff is very friendly and helpful, and the food is heavenly. My wife was a diehard stickybun fan until she tried their chocolate croissant (after a helpful suggestion from Dennis, the owner), and since then, the stickybuns have definitely been pushed lower on her list of favorites. Gem of a place for the area, and it seems that every weekend I see more people in their establishment, which is great to see. Visit it if you haven't yet, you won't be disappointed!

Smoke Daddy's Barbecue fridays and saturdays at the Lansdale Eagles Club

If you're at Uncle Greg's, be sure to ask him if he's got anything new behind the counter that might not be up on the menu yet. He's been experimenting with different things - he's had mac and cheese and macaroni salad some weekends even though they aren't on the posted menu. This past weekend, he had some marinated pork belly, which was DELICIOUS. He was experimenting a few weeks ago with a vinegar-based BBQ sauce as well, not sure if he's still working on it.

P.S. = Givemecarbs, that was my wife and I that were in front of you in the line at Uncle Greg's! I distinctly remember the car alarm blaring for a good 5 minutes straight until the owner figured out how to turn it off. I'll keep an eye out for you the next time I'm over there!

Uncle Greg's Smokin BBQ in Lansdale on a Friday Night

Bucksguy is correct, Greg's is open on Thursday through Sunday. I believe Thurs-Sat he is open 11am-7pm and Sun 11am-5pm. My wife and I stop by at least once a weekend to grab dinner or lunch. Tried everything, but the brisket is our favorite.

Molly Maguire's In Lansdale - Very Disappointing

I live two blocks away from Molly MaGuire's, so I've been eagerly awaiting the opening of this establishment ever since they started rehabbing the old building. My wife and I finally got the chance to stop in this evening for dinner and some drinks. I was keeping in mind some of the other reviews I had read on this website while we walked over to the restaurant.

The building is gorgeous, they really did a nice job with it – very inviting, with shades of dark brown and maroons, warm lighting, and woodwork everywhere. But, that's pretty much all of the nice things I have to say about tonight's experience.

We got there around 8:30pm, well after the dinner rush, and this was confirmed by the large number of empty tables present in the downstairs seating area. However, the hostess took about 10 minutes to seat us, citing “an inability to leave her station”. Finally, after seeing us waiting there amidst the empty tables, she decided it was slow enough to seat us upstairs, although there were plenty of tables available downstairs. She originally wanted to seat us at a table near the patio entrance, but I requested one closer to the upstairs bar, as it was so dark back near the patio entrance area that I doubt I would have been able to read the menu without additional lighting. She seemed annoyed at my request, but moved us without a problem.

We sat there and perused the menu, and then we waited. And waited some more. Our server came by and stated that she didn't know if we were in her section or not, but would be able to take our drink orders. We ordered two Guinness, which were brought to us in prompt fashion. However, we waited another 10 minutes before our server came back to take our order, so in total, we waited about 20 minutes before putting in our order. My wife ordered shepherd's pie, and I ordered bangers and mash, at which time I was told they were out of mashed potatoes, but I could substitute french fries or sweet potato fries. I was really in the mood for bangers, so I decided to run with it and selected sweet potato fries. Then we waited. Our server came by once to see if we needed more drinks, at which time I asked for an update on our food order. After 35 minutes passed by, our food finally arrived. My fries and bangers were cold, although my wife's shepherd's pie was nice and hot. The next time our waitress stopped by our table, I was compelled to ask “Can you tell me why there wasn't enough mashed potatoes for my bangers and mash selection, but there was enough for my wife's shepherd's pie?” After standing there looking dumbfounded for a few seconds, she slunk away, presumably to find out an answer to my question.

My wife's shepherd's pie was well seasoned and portioned nicely. My bangers were rather bland, and the sweet potato fries were cold and needed salt. Our server stopped by to tell me that the reason I didn't receive mashed potatoes was because “We were out of mashed potatoes when you initially ordered your entree, but during the time it took for you to receive your food, we got another shipment of mashed potatoes.” Um, excuse me? Did Fedex drop off another “shipment” of mashed potatoes while they were cooking up the sausages? Why was shepherd's pie allowed to be ordered, even though mashed potatoes are an essential ingredient in that dish as well? Granted, I had enough time while I was waiting for my food that I could have walked down to ACME, bought some potatoes, and made my own mashed potatoes to have with my bangers, but I digress. We finished our meal and waited for the check. Staying consistent with the theme of this review, we waited some more. Over 20 minutes passed before the server appeared and asked if we would like the check. After she brought it, I noticed there was an upcharge of $1.50 for the sweet potato fries. Really? I was told there would be no upcharge for the substitution, since mashed potatoes weren't available. She promptly took back the check and removed the charge. Shouldn't you, as a server, take a quick look at the check to make sure that not only is it the correct check for the table, but that the items listed are accurate as well?

One side note, the service was slow all across the restaurant, it wasn't only our table and server. There was a group of four next to us that were fairly patient (much more patient that I would have been), but after having waited through 30 minutes and three quick fly-bys from their server who chimed in with a “I'll be right there” every time he passed their table, they gave up and went to order from the bartender, much to the chagrin of their server, who showed up at the moment one of the ladies went up to the bar with the menu. I'm not sure how long it took them to order from the bartender though, as he was pretty busy playing with his phone and getting phone numbers from the various ladies that were seated on the stools.

All told, it was a rather disappointing experience. I know they just opened, and they are working out the kinks, so I'm definitely going to stop back again in a few weeks to see if the dinner service has improved. While I don't mind paying good money for good food, I will note that $45, including tip, for two entrees and two beers is a little steep for the area – I could find a decent meal in center city Philadelphia for a couple dollar more. While I am glad that other people have had positive experiences at the newly opened establishment, my first stop was rather slow and frustrating. Here's to hoping that my second visit will be more rewarding.

Live Crabs in Bucks or Montco

Just a heads up, the majority of crabs sold at ASSI are female crabs (this tends to be the norm when blue crabs are sold in Asian supermarkets). I've purchased some from them in the past, but they tend to run on the small side. Price wise though, they don't even compare to what you would pay elsewhere.

Good berry-picking at Tabora. Where else?

Just went to Tabora for some berry picking. Will say that I thought there was going to be more bushes to pick from, but there are basically only one row of blueberry bushes, half a row of gooseberries, half a row of black currants, one row of golden raspberries, and two short rows of red raspberries. My wife was able to scrounge up 1/2 pint of raspberries after some hard work. There are plenty of blueberries, I was able to pick about a quart in no time at all. Plenty of black currants to be had, I would say the gooseberries and raspberries need another week or so for the fruit to ripen.

The country store is chock full of tasty delectables. A HUGE variety of baked breads, cookies, and other pastries, homemade ice cream, fresh produce, prepared meals (fried chicken, rotisserie chicken), and other freshly made foods. Made the somewhat disappointing berry adventure worth it! We'll definitely be back, and hopefully when there is more ripe fruit on the vines!

Smoke Daddy's Barbecue fridays and saturdays at the Lansdale Eagles Club

Glad you enjoyed their food, givemecarbs! Definitely spread the word, I hope business picks up for him so his truck will stick around for a long long time. Coincidentally, we stopped back this afternoon for some more BBQ, and were once again pleased with the results. I forgot to ask Greg if he makes his own sauce or not, it tastes suspiciously like KC Masterpiece, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I'll have to try the turkey the next time based on your excellent review!

Smoke Daddy's Barbecue fridays and saturdays at the Lansdale Eagles Club

My wife and I have had Smoke Daddy's BBQ several times, and it was very tasty. Just thought I would let chowhounders know that there is yet ANOTHER BBQ truck in Lansdale, in the parking lot of the Lansdale Business Center at the intersection of North Cannon Ave and 7th Ave (coincidentally, only about 1 block from Smoke Daddy's). The truck is parked in the back of the lot, and the name is "Uncle Greg's Smokin BBQ". We had some brisket tonight, and it was very tender, flavorful, and moist. We grabbed a menu to compare with Smoke Daddy's, and it appears they offer a lot of the same items, with prices very comparable (one place might have cheaper brisket but more expensive ribs, etc). I was chatting with the owner, who said he just started up about 6 weeks ago. I asked him how business was going, and he said it's been slow, but things have been slowly picking up. He hasn't done a lot of advertising yet, although he was thinking of going with a local mailer. His truck is open on Thurs-Sat from 11:30am-7pm and Sun 11:30am-5pm. So if you're in the area and want to try out some BBQ, give Uncle Greg's a shot! We'll definitely be back, and are quite pleased to live right around the corner from not only one, but two tasty BBQ places!

Do you buy fish at Assi Market in Lansdale?

I second the recommendation for fish at ASSI. I have purchased fresh fish from there multiple times, and was very happy with the quality, selection, and price. They also have fresh sashimi grade fish fillets available, and giant sea scallops for much less than what you would pay in the other supermarkets.

Best Gyros?

Does anyone know why there is such a big difference between the "dueling" gyro food trucks near the Hilton on 5th Ave and 53rd? The one truck, which sets up right across from the Hilton on 53rd ave, always has lines of people. The other truck, just a block down on 5th and 52nd (and in sight of the first truck), doesn't have anywhere near the customers waiting. I've had them both, and I don't notice any real difference.....

Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans, reviews

My wife and I are going up tomorrow for Concert in the Park (it's become a tradition), and we kicked around the idea of taking advantage of the lunch promotion during RW. Best Buffets in the Burbs?

I would second the Old Town Buffet, the sushi is actually pretty good compared to the items I've seen presented at other buffets. I would not recommend Jim's Buffet in Lansdale, which is rather mediocre. King Buffet in the Plymouth Meeting mall isn't a bad place to hit up every now and then.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Huey's doesn't always have the fish and chips meal. It is never served during dinner, and it is available at various times during lunch time, but is not part of their regular menu. best beef ribs in philly area

Perhaps the ribs at the Rib rack are better now? I used to stop down and get a rack or two a couple years ago, but the quality wasn't great - I ended up enjoying their BBQ chicken more than the ribs. I haven't been back lately, so maybe they've improved in the rib department.

Any good sushi places around Ambler, PA?

The food at Fuji was fantastic. My wife and I stopped in for dinner last Monday to take advantage of their 1/2 price rolls promotion, and everything was delicious. If there was one thing I could complain about, it was that the service was a bit slow, but I'm sure the sushi chefs were working as fast as they could to placate all of the hungry diners which were waiting for their food.
