New Bad to the Bone Smokehouse BBQ Restaurant in Gainesville, VA

Hi,

We went back to Bad to the Bone today while Christmas shopping. Great food and service as usual.

The bbq is cooked over an open pit and they use hickory wood too, I believe. Just check their web site for more info.

BBQ--looking for the best

See what I posted about Bad to the Bone Smokehouse BBQ restaurant that recently opened in Gainesville, VA. Best around and similar to Sonny's BBQ in FL and SE States and Hickory House in Atlanta, GA (where we are from).

Homemade southern style greens, cornbread, soups/stews, pies, etc.

Yes, Bad to the Bone is similar to Sonny's BBQ based in SE States (FL, GA, NC, and SC) areas. We like Bad to the Bone better.

A local lady from Warrenton makes their pies. They rotate their soups/stews--just check their web site or FB page for details.

I read elsewhere that Absolute BBQ was not that great either.

Well worth the trip.

Two New N VA BBQ Restaurants Opening in September & October 2011

Yes, Bad to the Bone is similar to Sonny's BBQ based out of FL and SE States (i.e. GA, NC, SC). We liked Bad to the Bone better. They have a whiskey bourbon bbq sauce and original tomato based sauce too.

A local lady makes their pies from Warrenton area. Absolute BBQ has received bad reviews on other boards that I frequent.

New Bad to the Bone Smokehouse BBQ Restaurant in Gainesville, VA

Just wanted to update all you foodies on the new Bad to the Bone Smokehouse BBQ restaurant that recently opened in Gainesville, VA in October 2011. My family and I have eaten there several times and enjoyed the food, etc.

Bad to the Bone has smoked brisket, chopped and pulled pork, smoked wings, will smoke full turkeys, smoked sausages, and other great smoked meats including ribs. Two VA Tech grads and their family opened this great bbq restaurant in the same shopping center as the Wegmans Gainesville Stonewall Shops Square shopping center.

The restaurant makes its own homemade coleslaw, redskin potato salad, salads, bbq sauces, the best sweet and unsweet tea, and other sides. Homemade southern style pies too. No, I do not work for the store; but we are from GA and have been longing for real Southern style bbq and the "fixins".

You won't be disappointed. Also, they have beer and a bar with TV(s) for all you game watchers.

They also make Brunswick Stew and feature homemade soups, They will smoke you a turkey too.

Web site is below--enjoy!

Two New N VA BBQ Restaurants Opening in September & October 2011

Hi,

Since the weather is turning cooler and people are inquiring about real Southern style BBQ, I thought I would post about two new bbq restaurants opening in N VA areas. We have not been yet; but I will post details on their web sites and menu. I will also report back about our opinions of their styles.

Since we are from GA and miss Sonny's Real Pit BBQ and similar styles of southern bbq, it is hard to find quality here in N VA area. Willard's BBQ in Chantilly is about the kind of bbq to Southern style bbq that we can find.

Web sites are for new bbq restaurants now yet open--

www.eatabsolutebbq.com Absolute BBQ's site/info. Rumor has it that it used to be Ben's BBQ in Manassas, VA and that Ben is reopening same menu, etc. under new business name. Opened in September, I believe, just on Fridays to Sundays.

www.badtothebonesmokehouse.com Bad to the Bone Smokehouse BBQ's site/info. Located in Gainesville, VA where the Wegman's store is located. Located in strip mall opposite where new Dick's Sporting Goods was recently built. Opens in October 2011.

Enjoy!

Where can I buy lard near Silver Spring, Maryland?

Hi,

For the poster looking for "real leaf lard" or lard like your grandmother would use, try going to Hemp Meats which an old-fashioned butcher in Jefferson, MD area. We raise our own grassfed livestock and they butcher our beef and other animals for us in a USDA market.

Web site is below--

Also, next door is a great pastry/bake shop called Jefferson Pastries. Web site is below--

Hanaro Food New Asian Grocery Store in Centreville, VA--Opinions?

Hi,

Thanks for the info. We have been shopping here regularly since the opening.

Below is a link and info about the store.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/hanaro-food-c...

No web site yet for Hanaro Food.

Hope this helps--we think it is better than Super Hmart and Lotte's. They do not carry Plum ice cream but we pick that up at Lotte's in Chantilly, VA when we want it.

cafe or coffee house to work for 3 hours in Chantilly or Centreville?

You might check out Eggspectations in Chantilly, VA off Westfields Blvd. exit on Route 28. Great large, medium, or small breakfasts and other meals. Great baked goods too and reasonable prices.

Our family of 8 (6 kids and 2 adults) ate their for Father's Day before church. Great food/service.

Web site is below--

Also, my hubby took some of his employees there recently for a business meeting for lunch and they loved it.

Hope that helps.

Chantilly Donut Shop, Chantilly, VA Reviews?

Well I called the number for Chantilly Donut Shop; and the owners told me they only sell to restaurants, etc. as wholesalers. They did have a donut shop several years ago in Chantilly, VA in the Stein Mart shopping center when the PA Dutch Market was located there.

Apparently, they only sell as wholesalers now, not retail. What a great place this was, oh well.

Chantilly Donut Shop, Chantilly, VA Reviews?

Just wondered if the Chantilly Donut Shop was still in business. Years ago there used to be a great donut shop in the strip mall where Stein Mart is now located. I don't know if this donut shop where Stein Mart is located was the Cnantilly Donut Shop.

Please advise if the Chantilly Donut Shop is still around. Craving some homemade donuts. They still have a phone listing; but haven't called them yet.

Thanks.

Best family-friendly, chow-worthy RIGHT off I-66?

Old Salem Cafe in Marshall, VA off I-66W is great. The owners also own the Frost Diner in Warrenton, VA, Frost Cafe in Culpeper, VA, and Blue Ridge Seafood in Gainesville, VA.

Great food and a great Sunday Brunch Buffet from 10 am to 2 pm. Country breakfasts and great food.

Good luck.

Looking for Lard, in all the wrong places...

Try the two Amish Markets located in MD. The Lancaster County Dutch Market sells the lard (aka leaf lard) for $2.99 per pound. Also, the old Burtonsville, MD Amish Market now located in Laurel, MD sells lard. This Amish Market is called Dutch Country Farmers Amish Market.

You can also freeze lard up to 4 to 6 months and keep in the fridge up to 3 months. Just label the lard when you purchased the product.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Payne's Restaurant in Centreville, VA Closed

For those of you who are familiar with Payne's Restaurant in Centreville, VA area, it is apparently closed now! We rode by the area recently and noticed it.

It was kinda a "greasy spoon" place for locals to eat breakfast and other meals. He was in business for over 30 years from what I heard. Since they have demolished some old buildings around Payne's, my guess the owners closed because of this or retired.

Oh, well--

Where to find concord grapes?

Try Catoctin Mountain Orchards in Thurmont, MD area. Great fall trip. We have a 50 acre farm in Loudoun County and have not yet grown grapes. So this is our "go to" place for great grapes.

Website is below--

www.catoctinmountainorchard.com

They also offer hayrides and apples, etc.

Good luck--

Chicken Fried Steak

Try Old Salem Cafe in Marshall, VA. Homemade biscuits and country ham too.

Why is NoVA so devoid of good homey fair?

We love the Frost Diner in Warrenton, VA and Frost Cafe in Culpeper, VA (both owned by same owners). The Frost Diner and Frost Cafe have great country-style breakfasts, homemade country biscuits (not pre-baked or frozen), country sausage and gravy, and country ham. Also, great homemade desserts and other foods.

Old Salem Cafe in Marshall, VA is also owned by the same people of the Frost Diner/Frost Cafe as well as the Blue Ridge Seafood restaurant in Gainesville, VA. Old Salem Cafe does a great Sunday brunch buffet.

No website that I know of.

Good luck and good eats!!

large farmer's market va/md/wv/pa

Try the Old Salem Cafe in Marshall, VA and Frost Diner in Warrenton, VA. Both are owned by the same owners of the Frost Cafe in Culpeper, VA and Blue Ridge Seafood in Gainesville, VA.

Excellent breakfast brunches on Sundays at Old Salem Cafe, great fried homestyle chicken and freshly made biscuits (not frozen or pre-baked), country sausage and gravy, country ham, etc. at both locations of diners and cafes.

No web sites that I know of.

Good luck and good eats!

Delicious Mexican Food

We like El-Agave Mexican restaurant in Warrenton, VA (there are other locations also). It is about 45 to 60 minutes from I-66W. Great food and service. We live in Loudoun County and travel to El-Agave at least 8 to 12 times a month to eat. With 6 kids and 2 adults, the prices are reasonable for lunch and dinner.

Web site is below--

Desperately Seeking Aunt Jemima Buckwheat Pancake Mix

You could just call or email Food Service Direct and ask if they have discontinued the product. Also, perhaps they would send you a half case of 6 instead of 12.

Desperately Seeking Aunt Jemima Buckwheat Pancake Mix

I found a great resource for you. The source is at Food Service Direct and the Pepsico Company is who makes Aunt Jenima Buckwheat Pancake and Waffle Mix. I have ordered from Food Service Direct. Individual orders are accepted. You cannot return certain items--so check it out.

Food Service Direct is a wholesale restaurant supply house and you don't have to be a restaurant business to order. They have great products.

The Buckwheat mix sells for a case of 12 for $38.75. Check under Bulk Food tab and then Mixes... links for info.

Try the N VA Harris Teeter stores. In fact, Harris Teeter is opening a new store in Manassas near the new Aldie and Dollar Tree strip mall soon.

I think I saw it at Reston HT store recently.
