Sure sounds like a possibility.

Des Moines-One Night, One Person

Can't really go wrong with Django or Centro. Not sure if they are great "single" places, but the food is very good and they are always ranked highly by locals.

I am a big CABCO fan, so I will say hit them up. The bar is great for dinner, and a single diner would feel right at home. Friendly staff, great beer and good scratch made food.

The truth is, though, that Django is closer to you as is Centro. Both also very solid choices. Can't really go wrong with any of those.

Enjoy!

Ultimate Sandwich in Des Moines

"Good" food trucks, other than the great taco trucks we have, would be awesome. I'd love to be able to try out even more stuff than I can now.

The closest "good" sandwich spot to where i work IS B&B, and it is a 10 minute drive down E 14th St. A good deli like Manhattan or B&B on North E 14th would destroy.

Ultimate Sandwich in Des Moines

Well, Manhattan is great, though. I may take a sammich from them over B&B.

For me, it's more about knowing a bunch of great places that I can go to where ever I am, not so much one place that is the best. :) Now, if I had the choice between either of those and...SubWay, well I'd go with either of them.

Ultimate Sandwich in Des Moines

It seems to me, that sometimes they use actual "pork tenderloin", and some times they use "tenderized pork loin" and that can make the size and shape different.

At least, that is my theory. I prefer the killer subs, anyhow. :)

Return of Raul's in Des Moines

Ahh, have to remember that. I love good ta-kill-ya. :)

Haven't been to La Pena, but have always heard great things. point being, there are some fantastic Mexican places in the area, allof which are much better than the old Garcia's / Chi-Chi's / Raul's stuff, that seems like it is from another era now.

Can't wait to see what Jesus does with the old Cafe Su location in Valley Junction. I am excited to see what they end up with.

Return of Raul's in Des Moines

You mean to say it is harder now to find good Mexican food than when Raul's was the place to go? I strongly disagree with that. If you speak from experience, you must be on the wrong side of town. There are some fantastic Mexican / South American spots these days in Des Moines and surrounding areas.

Of course, there are also places like El Rodeo where you get decent food, but it is super cheap. Then there are places like El Chisme, Taco Loco, tamales Industry...and many more...that are quite authentic.

Give em a try.

ANYplace open for breakfast/lunch in Des Moines on Memorial Day?

Both are good, but Chef's isn't open for breakfast or lunch on weekdays.

Not sure Waveland is anymore, either, but Sam was looking for a more upscale sort of place, originally. And downtown.

Both great to check out, if you get a chance, anyway. :)

Boston Chowhouder heading to Kansas City

BBQ seems to come down to Arthur Bryant's, LC's or Oklahoma Joe's from most people. Lots and lots of good BBQ, though. Just visited KC a month ago, and had a great time. Just be careful heading south of I -70 and East of The Paseo. Found some pretty rough neighborhoods. Probably some good Chow out there, but I would have a guide for that area unless you know where you are headed. Course, you are from Boston, so maybe you are okay with that, I am not from such a large town.

ANYplace open for breakfast/lunch in Des Moines on Memorial Day?

Just called Court Ave Brewing Co and they said they are open at 11am on Memorial Day. You may want to call yourself and confirm, but I believe I talked to one of the managers / owners, Scott Carlson.

Great, solid place for some grub. Locally owned. Reasonably priced. 99% of dishes cooked from scratch.

Sounds "chowhoundish" to me. :)

Could also call and check Tumea & Sons Italian Restaurant (515) 282-7964, to see if they are open on Memorial Day. I know they usually do a lunch during the week, but hard to say on a holiday. Small, family run place. Great food. Not fancy, but that's not what I look for usually.

Hope that helps out, some.

Have not tried yet, trying to come up with a special enough ocassion to stop by, but have also heard nothing but good / great things about the new spot. I did have some pastries/cookies from one of the co-owner's stalls down at the DSM Farmer's Market, and they were awesome. :)

Have to let us know how it is, if you stop by.

Sadly, both Rube's and IBS are only open for dinner, starting at 5pm, or so.

Would be a good choice, though. :)

if you could only go to one place in Kansas City for BBQ, where would it be?

Really? The sauce? I am way more a fan of just great, smoked meats with no sauce. I add some to see how they taste usually, but good BBQ doesn't "need" sauce, unless you want it.

Well, next time I am down there with this much time to spare, which may be never, I will have to give another place a try. I just figured if I had been to KC a few times and hadn't even tried AB's, it would be like never having tried Stroud's or being in Chicago and not trying a street vendor Chi-dog...etc, etc.

Was just in KC and had Arthur Bryant's. I thought it was awesome.

It was also open on Sunday, which left Oklahoma Joe's out. If that factors into your plans, at all.

Have heard many great things about Joe's, though. Don't think you could go wrong.

I do think you could ask this question and get about 100 different, and valid opinions though. :)

Dinner in Gladstone, MO / North K.C. area.

Okay, so I am back at home after a fun (though interesting) weekend in KC. We never did make it to Em Chamas, it just didn't fit into our schedule, or what my wife wanted to do. Friday night we went to Tanner's Pub on Antioch Rd in Gladstone. Like it there. Our kind of place, decent food (looked like a huge kitchen), friendly bar staff and good prices on some beer.

Saturday morning, I stopped at the Waffle House just North of our Motel off of I-35 in Gladstone. I had never been, as they don't seem to be up in Iowa, and thought it was pretty decent. I have had better breakfasts, but also much worse. Nice people in there and it was nice and cheap.

I drove down the road to Jaeger's Paintball along Underground Drive and spent the next 6 hours having a blast (hadn't been to this particular paintball venue since about 1996, much nicer now). I emerged from the caves and headed back to our hotel, convieniently placed along the path to the Maple Woods Community College in Gladstone, where I had to pick my wife up. Managed to shower and go get her from the first day of training. She was training a Les Mills Fitness class, which is very draining.

Anyway, were were both hungry and thirsty. we went over to Zona Rosa and tried O'Dowd's. It was okay, but too early (around 6pm) for it to be hoping yet. Not really our kind of scene, lots of yuppies and "rich folk". We wandered over to the Granite City and had a mug, just because we had never visited another one besides ours in W.DSM.

Stopped back by Tanner's and had a pitcher of beer and headed back to the motel to crash for the night.

Sunday found me alone with nothing to do in KC for the entire day from 8am to 5pm. :) I asked the front desk fellow where a good local diner / restaurant would be to have some grub. he recommended IHOP....naturally, I passed and admonished him for not having any CHOW worthy advice to give.

I rambled around through downtown, and found myself at Mama's 39th St Diner. I had some very good corned beef hash there, and it reminded me of The Waveland Diner in Des Moines. Good stuff, that appeared to be cooked in house.

I deceided to be adventurous and head East on 39th street to hit the Paseo and head north towards Arthur Bryant's, where I planned to have lunch/dinner.

I found myself in a very poor / run down area of KC, that didn't look all that safe. I missed my turn onto the Paseo off of 39th and headed over HWY 71. I immediately turned around and headed back to the Paseo to head North. Half way to 18th St, the Paseo was under construction and I had to take a detour through an even rougher area to get back to a North / South Road.

I finally arrived at AB's and scoped the place out. I decided to head down 18th to Main and go down to the Plaza (as it was still 10:30 or so, and nothing was open around that area yet). I ended up at the Plaza O'Dowd's (much cooler and less W.DSM / Fancy) and had a few pints while chatting with the bartendress. I then walked around a beautiful Sunday morning at the Plaza. Didn't do any shopping, just wandered around people watching.

I headed back over to AB's and had a burnt end sandwich with a side of fries and a small draw of BLVD Pale Ale (one of my favorites). It was very good, even though other places seem to have usurped it as a KC BBQ King, I loved what I had.

I ended up back over by Zona Rosa at about 2:30, and went to a place called Brew Top, where I had another beer or two until 5pm rolled around. Then, the "exciting" 3hr drive back home.

All-in-all a great trip. Thanks for the tips, and hopefully I will have a chance to check out some more places down there someday.

good food along I 80

It's not horrible, but it is a shadow of the restaurant it was back when it first started out. It's more of a tourist trap, these days, in my opinion. Yeah, you can get some decent food there still, but not a place I recommend to visitors.

This Tanner's is right along the road to the College where her training class is. I am leaning towards that, as she will have been at it since 8am. Lots of good choices. O'Dowd's sounds like a good time, as well.

I looked up Zona Rosa, it looks a little like West Glenn. May have to check that out. :)

Nope, you are right. I could have sworn someone told me there was a Jack Stack by the air port, or near the KC Speedway. Maybe they were mistaken.

Cool, thanks for the ideas. Yeah, been to Stroud's. I loved it, but my wife was no huge fan. Looking for a place to go, have some dinner, a few drinks and chill. Something like CABCO or that Mexican place down by BLVD Brewing that you said was cool. A "party" kind of place..

Not looking for a "dining experience", just middle of the road. I will look up Churrascaria though, as we may need to do something fancy the second night we are there. (Arriving Friday night staying through 05/02/10.)

Any other ideas? It can be a little further from Gladstone, as long as it isn't a huge PITA to find or get to at night time. How is the Jack Stack up by the airport? Would that be a decent drive from there?

I will be in Gladstone for a training my wife is taking on May 1 and 2. Any ideas for a dinner place up that way, or even a brew pub sort of place. Something where we could have dinner and a few libations and not break the bank.

The training is in Maple Woods Community College and we are staying at a hotel just off of NE Antioch Rd and I-35 in what looks like Mid-Land Heights.

Thanks in advance.
